Apparently the recent rollercoaster surrounding Frank Ocean’s album release has infected music fans the world over with trust issues. Patience is a virtue that music fans clearly have trouble cultivating. It has been three years since NZ sensation Lorde released her debut album, Pure Heroine, and fans had started to despair of a follow up.

The young singer amassed a huge fan base with her addictive single Royals, and then her first record. But since 2013 there has been no follow up in recorded material, Lorde’s supporters have started to get a little pushy. However this week, one fan in particular did manage to elicit a solid response from Lorde, who confirmed that her sophomore album is written.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc]

Responding to an Instagram post by the singer, showing Lorde enjoying a vacation, a follower commented “Do you think we will ever get another album or should we just give up on you as an artist?” The confrontational message received a similarly forthright response from Lorde herself, who hit back with the following:

Give up on me if you want to! I’m an artist, I write a record when I have enough special stories to tell, and it’s all me, every melody, every lyric, not some team who just start the machine up every eighteen months like clockwork. The record is written, we’re in the production stage now. I’ve worked like a dog for a year making this thing great for you guys.

That information seems to have more than pacified “gabatron9”, who backtracked just a touch with the following inspirational message; “just what I wanted to hear. I love and respect your talent so much. I just need your voice. You are one of the most talented musicians out there girl. You are the future. You are magic. Didn’t mean to offend in any way”. However, it hasn’t stopped other fans from carrying on the thread of demand.

This isn’t the first time that Lorde has personally responded to pushy messages from fans, asking her to release new music. In similar to fashion to the kind of messages going out to Frank Ocean last week, her followers told her stop tweeting about uber drivers and go finish her album.

Unlike Ocean however, Lorde usually pushes back. So unless you want a dressing down from the star, best not ask again.

After last year’s monster release from Florence and The Machine, a new original track from Florence Welch has now been released. Wish You Were Here was written for the soundtrack for a new movie from Tim Burton, bringing all of Florence’s emotive, cinematic writing to the production.

With more of a delicate yearning than some of her high octane tracks, Wish That You Were Here still features Florence’s poetic lyricism – and the incredible power of her vocals. The song will appear in Burton’s next film; Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, a quirky and slightly macabre story based on the novel by American author Ransom Riggs.

In a press release, Florence told how she has wanted to work with Burton for a number of years now. Apparently, she contacted the eccentric director six years ago whilst touring Australia. Having visited an exhibition of his work, the singer was inspired to contact Burton via the only means to hand (no pun intended); “I wanted to leave him a message and all I had on me was an x-ray of my hand, as I had just broken my finger. So I wrote on the x-ray and gave it to the gallery to pass on and never knew if he got it. When we met for the first time, he told me it’s been hanging up in his office ever since.”

Welch also draws justifiable parallels between Florence and The Machine and Burton’s aesthetics; “I’ve always been a huge fan of Tim Burton’s. We have a very similar sensibility. It’s the kind of dark, dark romance of his work — so beautiful and whimsical, but with an element of darkness to it.”

She expands on the inspiration behind Wish That You Were Here with the following:

“‘Wish That You Were Here’ is a song about the idea that love is a journey and a risk. Having been on tour, I’ve lived in a sort of magical time bubble, where the days almost blend together. It’s amazing, but it comes at a cost — a cost of leaving the people you love behind for a year or two. You kind of feel like if you could sing a song into the wind, maybe the wind could take it to them in a way that you can’t with a text or a call. You just want to send your love in a different way, in a way to somehow reach the unreachable.

You can listen to the track below. Burton’s production of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is expected to premier in theatres this September.

If you had thought you had heard everything there was to hear from Led Zeppelin, think again. The band are set to release an expanded and updated version of their Complete BBC Sessions, which features previously unheard material. One new song, Sunshine Woman, has now been made available ahead of the September release.

Comprised of two discs worth of live performances by Zeppelin, the BBC Sessions was recorded between 1969 and 1971. Originally released in 1997, Jimmy Page has overseen the production of the “complete” reissue. Speaking about the sessions, Page said that “The BBC Sessions show in graphic detail just how organic the group was,” he said. “Led Zeppelin was a band that would change things around substantially each time it played…We were becoming tighter and tighter, to the point of telepathy.”

The Complete BBC Sessions expands to a triple disc edition, which includes liner notes for each session, contributed by Dave Lewis. With eight unreleased songs added to the track listing, the collection will feature a long lost radio show by Zeppelin. Broadcast in April 1969, the session has acquired mythic status amongst fans, after it was thought to have been lost.

The session showcases the only known recording of Sunshine Woman, as well as I Can’t Quit You Baby and You Shook Me. A second recording just two years later, with unreleased versions of Communication Breakdown and What Is and What Should Never Be, is also added to the tracklisting. For Zeppelin devotees, it should make for an interesting record of the young band’s amazing progression in such a short time.

You can listen to the newly unveiled Sunshine Woman here. A gritty piece of true rhythm and blues; hefty Zeppelin riffs, bar blues piano and harmonica and Robert Plant’s familiar vocals all come together in this track, which Page has described as “basically made up on the spot”.

You might remember that Kanye West and the VMA’s have some history. Or at least Taylor Swift remembers. So the news that the producers of MTV’s 2016 Video Music Award have given Kanye free rein to do whatever he likes at the show, for four whole minutes no less, is either exciting or terrifying or both.

According to a source “close to the production”, organisers have given Kanye complete license to “rap, sing, dance or even just stay silent”. At this point they are reportedly expecting big things from ‘Ye, but “we’re told show producers are totally clueless which door he’ll pick.”

You would have to have been living under a soundproofed rock (without wifi or a personal hotspot) to have missed Kanye’s steady manoeuvring into a world outside of simply making music. With that in mind, it does seem that the possibilities as to what he’ll do are far from limited. There is also a strong possibility that audiences may be on the receiving end of another of Ye’s crazed creative delusions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7mLs9LeQB4

Having performed at the VMA’s six times previously, the show has played host to more than a few of Kanye’s weirder moments. In 2009 he famously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video and last year, as Swift presented him with the Vanguard, we were treated to a memorable acceptance speech from Ye. After thanking a “gracious” Taylor, he went on to question his fashion choices in that moment, blame it on the alcohol and struggled through a rambling explanation – which came close to an apology. He also declared that he would run for president in 2020 after a rant at MTV, a statement we’re still unsure is serious or not.

So who knows what we will see this year. Alongside Kanye, the VMA’s will feature performances from Future, Ariana Grande with Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears with G-Eazy, Nick Jonas with Ty Dolla $ign, and the Chainsmokers with Halsey. Also Rihanna, who will receive this year’s Vanguard Award. Kim Kardashian-West will be among the presenters, along with Jaden Smith.

All in all this year’s VMA’s promise to be appointment viewing, and we’ll be waiting to see what ‘Ye can do with just four minutes to save the world…

Fans are still awaiting Frank Ocean’s painfully anticipated Boys Don’t Cry, and some may well be thinking that he should surely be locked in the studio by now? Apparently not. Last night, A$AP Rocky recorded a snapchat video of Ocean racing Tyler, The Creator through the streets of LA with clearly zero fucks given about the whole global desperation for his album situation. Or perhaps just letting off steam because of that same situation – which, admittedly, must be fairly pressurising.

The footage shows Ocean and Tyler exchanging some nice trash talk before racing off from a stop light. Not to ruin for you, but Ocean takes the lead while A$AP sounds a touch white-knuckled, shouting “Somebody get me out of this car! I’m scared!”.

https://twitter.com/GoIfMedia/status/766234908331216896

The pair are members of the Odd Future collective, and this isn’t the first time Tyler has got competitive. He previously challenged Kanye West to a foot race at this year’s Coachella.

It’s a fun, endearing insight into the downtime of wildly rich and famous celebrities, but unfortunately the majority of the internet are not amused with Ocean. Reports on the footage have been posted with titles alluding to the fact that Ocean clearly has spare time on his hands. One reporter, Halle Kiefer, mused that “He probably wasn’t even racing. He probably just had to hurry home to put the finishing touches on … haha, just kidding, this album is never coming out.”

While fans cool their heels waiting (so. much. waiting.) for Boys Don’t Cry to actually drop, Ocean collaborator Malay has tried to defend the singer, saying “art cannot be rushed”. Nah, but expensive cars can – we’ll get to the art later!

EDIT: Frank Ocean has released his visual album Endless and Rolling Stone confirms that Boys Don’t Cry, a separate project, will be released this weekend. All is forgiven.

You know you’ve done a good job staying off the radar when you get likened to Frank Ocean… Which is exactly the comparison that has been drawn between this year’s frontrunner for best disappearing act and Canadian duo Japandroids. The Canadian duo who mysteriously quit at the height of their fame in 2013 after the release of their acclaimed sophomore album Celebration Rock.

Following an announcement on Facebook, saying that it was “time for us to disappear into the ether for a while, y’all stay crazy/forever”, the band truly did just that. All online presences became inactive and Japandroids were on indefinite hiatus. Until now.

The pair have shared a tour poster on Facebook, listing prospective dates in Australia. They will be playing headline shows in both Sydney and Melbourne, taking place December. Appearing at intimate venues, only a couple of hundred tickets are available for the shows. Which promises a resurrection of the duo’s previously renowned sweaty, hectic gigs. Japandroids are also confirmed for appearances at Meredith Festival, Fairgrounds Festival and Disconnect Festival.

Japandroids

The last time Japandroids played in Australia was at Laneway Festival back in 2013 as they toured Celebration Rock. This year’s shows will be amongst some the first from the newly re-emerged outfit, and fans are hopeful of new material to be showcased. As the very style that the pair originally cultivated flourished in their absence, with bands like Beach Slang, Japandroids may well find themselves with a legion of new fans as well as the old faithful.

Politically minded rap-rock supergroup Prophets Of Rage shared more new music this week, taken from their upcoming EP The Party’s Over. Debuting the track on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, the band shared a live recording of a reworking of the Beastie Boys’ classic No Sleep Till Brooklyn. Reworked against the current US elections, the track is titled as No Sleep Til Cleveland.

Having dropped their high-octane debut Prophets Of Rage in July, their first entry seemed very much set to pacify Rage Against The Machine fans with its overblown riffs and confrontational stylings. However, the recording of No Sleep Til Cleveland settles back into maybe more of a balance between the groups counterparts.

Bringing together members of Rage, Cyprus Hill and Public Enemy, the track runs a little lighter. With Tom Morello’s hefty guitar work stripped down to effective accents and a trademark, undulating solo to take you to the drop. Rather than the overwhelming presence of Rage style instrumentation, No Sleep Til Cleveland smacks of old school hip-hop – in a good way. With all the bite of Beastie Boys and Cyprus Hill originals, just with Morello repping it this time around.

Prophets Of Rage’s debut EP will be released August 25, via Caroline. The Party’s Over is set to feature other cover versions including RATM’s Killing In The Name Of and Public Enemy’s Shut Em Down.

It has been eight years since Metallica put out an album, but after months of build up, the metal legends have finally announced that Hardwired… To Self Destruct will drop on November 18 of this year. Reported to be a double disc release, Metallica also shared the first preview of their new material this week with new track Hardwired.

A thrashed out, overdriven track that will take you back to classic Metallica like Battery and Master Of Puppets, Hardwired shows no sign of slowing. Fast, menacing riffs, James Hetfield‘s familiar vocals and pounding percussion make this a furious return from the band. Produced by Greg Fidelman, who also engineered their last LP, Death Magnetic (2008). As a preview of the album, the track makes good on Kirk Hammett’s earlier promise for the album; “It’s metal” he said last year. “It’s heavy”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhBHL3v4d3I

Metallica debuted the track in a Facebook Live broadcast, where they also revealed that “The album’s not actually finished.” But Lars Ulrich assured fans that “It will be done in the next week or so.” The announcement follows teasers from the band via their own and fan websites, including garage demos in 2014 and a video of James Hetfield thrashing out riffs in the studio last December.

Earlier this year Ulrich said that 2016 was shaping up to be a “pretty in-your-face year, at least the back half of it”. He also continued to say that the band have in fact been revisiting older material – albums and photographs – which could be responsible for the throwback to vintage Metallica on Hardwired. The lead up to the release has seen a fairly mysterious side from the band, Ulrich speculated “Who knows what’s going to happen with this stuff?”. However they have vetoed a surprise, exclusive release.

Metallica

Despite it being so many years since their last full length release, Metallica have not been idle in that time. As well as sifting through an estimated eight hundred compositions for the album, the band also put out their 3D doco Metallica Through The Never. They have hit all seven continents for live shows – and that includes Antarctica. And Metallica also made headlines when they opened up about employing a band ‘therapist’ to work on the relationships within the group over the years.

If you can’t wait until November for the album, Ulrich announce in their Facebook broadcast that the band will be playing a live show this Saturday. A slightly strange presentation, the venue is a Metallica pop-up store in Minneapolis. The gig will be live-streamed via Pandora for those who can’t get there, you can catch it 12:00 ACT on Sunday.

So, we still do not have a Frank Ocean album. The release date came and went and the non-appearance of Boys Don’t Cry nearly broke the internet – it certainly broke Ocean’s fans. It’s no wonder that neither head nor tail of the singer has been seen, as Twitter assumed the persona of a spurned lover. One who is possibly gonna turn psycho on his sorry ass, and kidnap his family!

It’s been a hard time for all of us. Just one scan through Twitter and the sheer intensity of feeling is overwhelming, as fans have ridden out a whole rollercoaster of emotion. From hope and anticipation, to heartbreak, disbelief, anger and frustration. In fact, the reaction has been so immense that Twitter itself has charted the activity around Frank Ocean over the last week.

And what better way to illustrate our modern psychology than through the use of emojis? The universal language of feeling today, more expressive than words and more subtle than a Shakespearean sonnet.

According to Twitter’s findings, the “face with tears of joy” 😂 was the expression of choice for many Tweeters, followed by “thinking face”. And obviously, emoji activity peaked on August 5, the supposed release date. You can view the charted use of both emojis below:

If emojis really are the windows to the soul, then what is that saying about Ocean fans? And can we really examine the psychological state induced by these events by reading the language of emojis?

In the days preceding the release date, you will notice a predominance of hopeful, optimistic and almost spiritual emojis from fans. A classic “thumbs up sign” 👍 denotes a feeling that everything will be ok, that there’s nothing to worry about. The “person raising both hands in celebration” 🙌 also indicates a growing excitement, unmarred by doubts as yet.

However, a lean towards the use of “person with folded hands” 🙌 expresses something a little different. Despite the politically correct terminology, it is universally recognised as a spiritual act of prayer, and sometimes thankfulness. Definitely still an optimistic emoji, however this hints at growing doubts – the feeling that they may need some help on this one. Even asking a higher power indicating the magnitude of this event. Of course, this isn’t the first time that Frank Ocean fans have been let down, so a certain mistrust is totally normal.

However, one Twitter user couched his announcement with two “police car revolving lights” 🚨. On one hand this could be viewed as expressing “alert”, however most psychologists would argue that the colour red and the police association indicates a warning. There are definitely negative connotations attached to this emoji, and maybe on a subconscious level this user was sending out a warning that all may not be as it seems.

There was also one user who employed a “sign of the horns”, which is of course the universal hand gesture for “rock on!”. It seems to have little to do with either Frank Ocean or the impending doom, and, honestly, I’m not sure they knew what was happening. They just wanted to get involved – like any good rock fan.

As the morning of August 5 dawns, twitter is immediately on the alert. And the emojis are coming thick and fast – a clear sense of desperation is driving this increased use. In fact, the “speaking head in silhouette” appears at this point. Putting aside its somewhat timid title, the visual appearance of this emoji is mildly aggressive, and also suggests a need for an outlet. As the tension mounts, fans are in need of a bigger outlet than 140 characters, as this emoji expresses.

It is on this day that we see the biggest use of facial expression emojis, as Twitter users attempt to express very personal feelings. Predominantly the “disappointed face” 😢 with it’s single tear, which needs to explanation. The “persevering face” 😣 also appears frequently, again as fans struggle through this very difficult time.

https://twitter.com/TheSuperMan_Dan/status/762098041629380608

As fear mounts that the album may not appear, we do see the spike in use of “face with tears of joy”. This is interesting, some may perceive this to be an ironic inward turning of emotion. Fans may be laughing darkly at their own naivety and expectation. Another interpretation could be that the stress of the time has actually toppled some into hysteria, where their perception of events is now skewed and distress has turn to a sort of delusional hilarity. This is a worrying idea, as it hints strongly towards mental instability.

A third reading is that we have truly lost the ability to read facial expressions after restricting our communication to screens. Some users may be perceiving the double tears as simply extreme sadness, only associating one element rather than examining the uplifted mouth and positive eyebrow positioning. This is also worrying, but not relevant to this study.

https://twitter.com/sahandarman10/status/762514874597388288

Once it became apparent that the album was not going to appear, we can see much more assertive use of emojis. The “broken heart” 💔 appears often, a clear expression of upset and betrayal. We also see a lot of “fire” 🔥, often used in multiples. A primal symbol for immediate danger, and also extreme anger, this is very speaking from disappointed fans. While users employing the broken heart could be seen as despairing, those posting fire may be reacting more strongly and with more vigour. These Tweeters are more likely to take dangerous action.

I have already mentioned the other key emoji at this point, which is the “thinking face”. An intellectual response to the situation, these are people who are sincerely analysing what has happened. This expresses a more pragmatic, less emotional response to the lack of music.

https://twitter.com/Tyronnexo/status/763943138842914816

Finally we come to the emoji that Twitter users have assigned to Ocean himself. At first glance the “water wave” 🌊 is an obvious choice as a visual representation of the singer’s moniker. However, let’s look at that wave – it’s dramatic, verging on tidal. A clear indication that Ocean may be drowning in his efforts, or about to be swamped by the weight of it. A second interpretation could be that he is simply surfing this wave, with no set plan and no schedule. Either would be highly expressive of a fan’s understanding of Ocean’s psyche at this time.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words – which means I could have just done this whole article with two emojis, but hopefully this will help towards a better understanding of Frank Ocean fans in this difficult time. ✌️.

Not only an institution of the UK club scene, but a worldwide destination for dance music, London’s Fabric is set to close its doors this weekend. The announcement comes after the deaths of two teenagers at the venue over the last few months. Fabric has previously brushed through threats of closure, but this time it looks like it really could be the end.

Only last weekend, an 18 year old male collapsed outside of the club’s doors at 8.20am. Sadly, he died shortly after. On June 25 of this year, another man of the same age fell ill inside the venue and also died. Both deaths have been confirmed to be drug-related.

Fabric London

Image via Bridge Clubbers

In a statement on their website, Fabric wrote “For the past two years Fabric has operated without incident, but tragically in the past nine weeks two 18-year-old boys have died as a consequence of drug overdoses.” The statement continues, confirming that “In order to understand how this has happened we have agreed with the police and other agencies to suspend our operation while we investigate. The club will therefore be closed this weekend.”

As previously mentioned, this is not the first time that police have urged the local council to close the venue for good. Fabric has endured strict policing over the last couple of years, with sniffer dogs and ID scans included as part of their licensing conditions. The club had recently managed to remove some of the police presence on the grounds that it undermined their own efforts to confiscate drugs.

Unsurprisingly, the main issue for clubs like Fabric is often ecstasy. Around the UK, venues are facing closure or revoked licenses due to incidents of overdosing or trafficking. Growing up, Fabric was an iconic destination in London – and my first clubbing experience. There were always rumours about “approved” dealers, where the venue’s management just looked the other way to better monitor drug use in the club. A kind of tolerance that allowed them some control. Whether that is true or not, I’m afraid I can’t say.

Sadly, it also happens to be the biggest destination for artists in London as well. Fabric Live is as legendary as the venue itself, and those three rooms have hosted some of the best DJs and producers from all around the world. For an aspiring producer, playing Fabric was a rite of passage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-dcdHMKvKo

The London club scene has declined slowly, but fairly shockingly, over the last few years. For Londoners, these closures often seem suspicious, or at least capricious on the part of police and councils. And while the problems and dangers of drug use cannot be ignored, it really will be a tragedy if Fabric falls as well.
