Snoop Dogg has ditched the plethora of strange stage-names and taking a break from campaigning against gun violence, enlisted a ton of collaborators to bring us his 13th solo album, BUSH, which you can stream via iTunes.

Out on the 13th of May, BUSH boasts ‘Everything-Turns-To-Gold’-Pharrell Williams as executive producer and a guest list that includes Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani and Kendrick Lamar (to drop just a few names). Tha Doggfather is quoted as saying that his focus is on the music this time around, instead of creating a new persona to promote (in other words, this isn’t a Snoop Lion deal we’re getting here.)

The Stevie Wonder-featuring California Roll was released on Tuesday and is an ode to Cali and it’s medical marijuana program (“get yourself a medical card.”) Wonder flexes his Motown muscles on vocals, keys and harmonica on the track, which was apparently all down to Snoop’s direction, as Pharrell found himself starstruck in the legend’s presence. Understandable, really. The single follows on from other recent releases including the Tarantino-inspired video clip for So Many Pros.

BUSH track listing:

1. California Roll (feat. Stevie Wonder)
2. This City
3. R U a Freak
4. Awake
5. So Many Pros
6. Peaches N Cream (feat. Charlie Wilson)
7. Edibles (feat. T.I.)
8. I Knew That
9. Run Away (feat. Gwen Stefani)
10. I’m Ya Dogg (feat. Kendrick Lamar and Rick Ross)

Ahead of the album’s release, you can stream it in full via iTunes first play.

Snoop Dogg‘s thirteenth and final album, Bush, is mere weeks away from dropping. To get us all in the mood, the Doggfather has dropped a video for the Pharrell-produced second single; So Many Pros.

The song itself is a bland bucket full of shit and stripper tears that sounds almost exactly the same as previous single Peaches N Cream. Autotune Snoop is possibly the worst Snoop of all the Snoops, but the accompanying video is actually kind of sweet. The whole thing is one giant, colourful montage of 70s blaxploitation movie-style posters featuring Snoop in a number of roles ranging from secret agent, to afro guy, to pimp, to pimp in a fedora, to pimp with a gun to… you get the idea.

Bush is out May 12 via Doggystyle, i Am OTHER and Columbia.

In news that should not surprise anybody, Snoop Dogg this week invested some of his vast, THC-dusted fortune into Eaze, an app that gets your medical marijuana delivered directly to your door (in less than 10 minutes!) for the toker who appreciates convenience.

It isn’t the first time D.O. Double-G. has shoved his money into something completely ridiculous, as we’ve covered before, so in the spirit of things we’ve taken a look at some other baffling business ventures by some of hip hop’s finest.

5. Flavor Flav – Flav’s Fried Chicken

Look at that consummate businessman grinning so shit-eatingly above you. You can just tell (from the giant clock around his neck) that this man’s time is money and the world is his marketplace, waiting to be capitalised on.

Uh… kind of. Aside from being out-rapped by Chuck D on every Public Enemy song ever made and popularising the phrase ‘Yeeeeeeahhh boiii’ while bouncing around like a dickhead, Flavour Flav is also the man behind MTV’s eye-clawingly terrible Flavor Of Love and, yes, Flav’s Fried Chicken.

You’re saying you DON’T want this man anywhere near your food?

Flav reached for the stars with this one, claiming he wanted the franchise to be in the vein of KFC and have restaurants worldwide. He even claimed to use a secret recipe, also just like KFC.

Crazy. The secret ingredient was all the crazy.

The first restaurant opened in January of 2011… and closed in April of also that year, ending Flav’s run as the hip hop Colonel Sanders. Key factors cited included expired coleslaw, unpaid employees, drugs and domestic violence, but I like to think that the good people of Clinton, Iowa simply loved themselves too much to eat at an establishment run by a wizened old gremlin in a Viking helmet.

4. Memphis Bleek – Shampoo Spokesman

The majority of you are right to be scratching your heads and wondering who I’m talking about right now. Memphis Bleek was at one time the Robin to Jay-Z‘s Batman, only if Robin were somehow more useless. Probably the biggest thing he ever did was hide behind Jigga on The Takeover and hurl water balloons at Mobb Deep and Nas. Also, Jay-Z lyrically ruffled his hair in a condescending fatherly manner on the Sierra Leone Remix of Kanye’s Diamonds. That’s pretty much it for Memphis Bleek and notability.

So to help dismiss all these claims that he’s only around because Jay-Z, Bleek went solo and got his.

In the form of uh… shampoo commercials?

Yeah this was awful. It’s difficult to call it a ‘total failure’ because Garnier as a company is still around and successful today in spite of this, but if you can find me one person who bought their shampoo because this guy danced around in the commercial, spitting drivel like ‘Garnier, it strong all day’, then I can tell all my friends that I’ve met Memphis Bleek’s mother. He was for some reason never used as their spokesman again.

3: Lil Kim – Se Swa Salons

Without Lil Kim we wouldn’t have Nicki Minaj… should be the prosecution’s closing statement from her trial for war crimes.

Also, in her (hours upon hours, every single waking day) of spare time since becoming completely irrelevant once the 90s ended, Lil Kim has a passion for both pointless Twitter feuds and also the beauty industry. To the latter end she has opened five beauty salons across North Carolina and left me to ponder, who in the name of all that is FUCK, would pay to have their cosmetic beauty organised by somebody whose very idea of that is this:

KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Despite her only clients being sewer rats and the blind (probably) and her cousin and business partner being arrested for stealing money from employees and other fraudulent business practices, Se Swa Salons are, by some hateful machination of the universe, still around today. Proof that fuck everything.

2: 50 Cent – Magic Stick Condoms

50 Cent has his diamond-encrusted fingers stuck in a whole mess of pies. He’s in the underwear business, the mining business, the embarrassing Floyd Mayweather business and, for a brief and hilarious period, he was in the condom business.

’50 Cent brand ‘Magic Stick’ condoms, for people who are gross’

Because the first thing anyone listening to lyrics such as ‘I touch the right spot at the right time. Lights on or lights off, she like it from behind’ was thinking of was ‘hey, I bet that guy knows all about birth control!’. Nonetheless, these are just perfect for keeping your G-Unit wrapped, if you overlook the small fact that they totally don’t work.

‘Surprise, motherfucker’

Yep, Fiddy tried to add an ingredient that would prolong sexual performance and it made those raincoats combust faster than Young Buck‘s career and with the potential for almost as many tears. With his market whittled down to ‘people who don’t care if their condoms work or not’ (the profoundly miserable), 50 Cent and his business partners made the wise decision to swiftly abandon the birth control racket.

‘Bye!’

1. Birdman – Bronald Oil and Gas

Ugh, Birdman. That creepy, soulless, unquestionable piece of shit behind Cash Money Records. You would think with all the time and effort this man puts in every year into turning contemporary hip hop into a joke with an elbow to the crotch as a punchline, that he wouldn’t have time for any zany outside business ventures like the above artists. Well guess again you doubting fuckface.

Birdman and his sister are less than amused with your lack of faith.

According to Birdman himself and this totally official and not-at-all-fake-looking website, he and his brother, Slim, are oil barons. Specifically, the ‘founding visionaries’ of Bronald (A combination of their actual names, Bryan and Ronald) Oil and Gas, which is how all the enormous corporations come up with their names, of course.

Somewhere in the middle of ruining rap music, Birdman had allegedly stumbled across oil (also, some gas) and now he’s as oil baron-y as the There Will Be Blood guy, only, you know, without the old-timey pipe and the mustache or probably any actual oil.

Even these guys were more legit.

Yessir, despite setting up an entire website featuring heavily detailed claims like ‘a trillion dollar energy oasis’, giving interviews where he claimed to have been in the oil business and providing for his family with it for ‘four or five years’ and even tattooing an oil pump on his head (because it has to be true if it’s in permanent ink!), it turns out that the official regulators in charge of issuing permits for oil and gas had never heard of any of this.

It’s almost as if this upstanding citizen was full of shit.

And it seemed as though he’d begrudgingly admitted this bullshit after covering up his head tattoo in 2010 and deleting the official website, but no, it came roaring back in 2014, his tattoo-covering merely a genius Birdman ploy to trick us all into leaving him alone ‘to restructure the company’ (as though people were kicking his door in instead of not giving two shits about him in the first place). Bronald Oil and Gas also promises this year to ‘launch with innovative technology, products, and projects that will shock the American oil and gas industry’.

Well shut up and take my money!

Or, you know, maybe just fuck off.

Snoop Dogg is one of the big stars taking part in the new US anti-gun campaign “#ImUnloading”

The campaign sees musicians, sports stars, tech names and more bringing their celebrity power to the non-profit groups Campaign to Unload and States United to Prevent Gun Violence. Other musicians involved include Jhene Aiko and Aloe Blacc.

The PSA is in support of “Unload Your 401k,” a program which has shown Americans that many 401k retirement plans support the US gun industry through investments.

The Unload Your 401k provides an easy way for people to check whether their retirement plan supports the gun industry and the National Rifle Association.

“I’m unloading for my loved ones that I’ve lost,” Snoop Dogg said. “I’m going all in for gun free investing.”

“How I’ve been affected by gun violence over the years is through deaths of friends and family members and associates,” he said in the PSA.

Watch here:

Ho fucking ho, it’s December once again and that means it’s time for your ears to cop a full-frontal assault from garbage Christmas songs from terrible musicians of every genre imaginable. In supermarkets, on the radio, even at work where you cannot possibly escape, an entire month of vomit-inducingly jolly tunes.

As far as I’m concerned, there has been maybe one good Christmas song written in the history of ever, and it was Paul Kelly’s How To Make Gravy. Everything else has been pretty much a pathetic attempt to cash in on the festive season, to the delight of middle-aged women and awful people everywhere and much to the chagrin of people who hate the unholy fuck out of everything about Christmas like me (except the food and the presents and the getting to spend time with family stuff, that can stay)

If you ever meet anyone who enjoys one of the following, run for your life before they suck your soul right out of your face.

5: Destiny’s Child – Eight Days Of Christmas

People fawn over Beyonce as some kind of untouchable goddess today but I’m here to let you know she can be just as tacky and awful as any other pop star and is more than capable of horrendous shit like this. What happened to the other four days, Destiny’s Child? Did you forget about them entirely or did you simply not have enough blithering crap to sing about to fill the traditional 12?

Seriously, this is fucked. A diamond belly ring? A cropped jacket and dirty denim jeans? A gift certificate to get my favourite CDs? What kind of basic bitch trip are you all on? This had to have been before Bey and Jay were a thing, because I know Jigga would be having absolutely none of this rotten little list you’re giving him, Beyonce.

jay-z-600x450

“The fuck is this?”

It’s disheartening to contemplate that, for all of their independent woman songs and girl power attitude, at heart, Destiny’s Child were just as materialistic and shallow as any of the women they were empowering in the late 90s/early 00s.

4: Bob Dylan – It Must Be Santa

Why did you do this to us, Bob? What could you, a man who has released over 36 studio albums, 11 live albums and regarded as one of the best songwriters of all time, possibly have to gain from releasing this disgustingly jaunty, accordion-heavy Christmas song about Kris Kringle?

A song where you sound like a grandfather blind drunk on eggnog as you speed through sickeningly child-like Christmas-y lyrics like ‘special night, beard that’s white, it must be Santa, it must be Santa’. How dare you stand there in the accompanying music video, in your ridiculous white top hat, as though you don’t owe the rest of the world an explanation for this nonsense. How dare you.

3: Bon Jovi – Back Door Santa

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrM9cvjeIEM

I shouldn’t even have to point out that Back Door Santa sounds like the title of an unfathomably sleazy Christmas-themed porno. I also shouldn’t have to point out that Bon Jovi were the Britney Spears of 80s hair metal, and that their cover of Clarence Carter’s already awful original is unfiltered reindeer piss.

Everyone knew Clarence Carter was a filthy old man (he is behind such other ribald hits as Strokin’) but it’s somehow even worse to hear feathery-haired git Jon Bon Jovi slither his way through these bafflingly suggestive lyrics, including. ‘I keep the little girls happy while the boys are out to play’ and ‘I kept that door open in case anyone smelled a mouse’.

It’s already creepy enough that Santa knows when and where I sleep, I’ll be spending Christmas Eve in the corner of my room, rocking back and forth with a baseball bat if you suggest for even a second that he might slip in and try to rear end me. Fuck you, Santa.

2: Snoop Dogg – Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto

How well would gangsta rap and Christmas mix? Death Row records were so keen to find out they stuffed our stockings with Christmas On Death Row in 1996, chock full of wonderful beats to deck the halls to.

I’m kidding of course, this shit is the plague. Not to be mistaken with the James Brown song of the same name (also shit), not only was this a real Snoop Dogg song from BEFORE he got old and lost his mind, but Dogg Pound members who weren’t previously terrible like Daz Dillinger and Nate Dogg also lent their names to this monstrosity. It stabs at my insides to hear them rapping about ‘postin’ up with eggnog’ and rhyming phrases like ‘hair still nappy’ with ‘steal a gift for my old grandpappy’.

Force my eyeballs open a la A Clockwork Orange and make me watch Jingle All The Way every fucking day of December before you make me listen to this again, shit.

1: Justin Bieber and Busta Rhymes – The Little Drummer Boy

THERE WILL BE NO CHRISTMAS! THE NORTH POLE IS ON FIRE AND ALL THE ELVES ARE BURNING! GOD IS DEAD AND SANTA MURDERED HIM! JESUS CAN’T EVEN WITH THIS! THE GRINCH TOOK A PISS ON THE NATIVITY SCENE! YOUR STOCKING IS FILLED WITH BURNT PRESENTS AND REINDEER SHIT!!!!

Welcome to the second installation of our investigative report, “Snoop Dogg: What the Actual Fuck?” (read the first part ‘ere)

After enjoying (varying degrees of) critical and commercial success in the music industry as a gangsta, a pimp, a rastafarian and, recently, a funked up Snoopzilla (which, admittedly, is pretty awesome), he’s decided to transform into a completely different kind of animal. Business Snoop. Corporate Snoop. Investor in Start-Ups Snoop.

It goes way beyond entrepreneur. We already showed you this photo in Part One, but here it is again because it’s so unintentionally hilarious:

3037752-inline-i-2-how-snoop-dogg-does-investing

He looks like he reads ‘Dilbert’ comics. And laughs at them.

He’s quite new to the whole venture capitalist thing, but he’s already made investments in around 15 different companies. He’s putting together a pretty promising portfolio, with things like Reddit, stock trading app ‘Robinhood’ and something called ‘PhilzCoffee’.

Don’t let the sweater vest and all this boring stock market talk fool you though. Snoop Dogg is still a creative genius and a carefree artist at heart. Specifically, a painter:

1096115

One of these recently sold for around $10 000. In related news, I’ve lost the will to live.

Snoop’s been known for his weird and wonderful merchandise for a while now, so let’s take a look at some of the highlights. Excellent choices indeed, these are Snoop Dogg-branded products that address supply and demand across a number of key market demographics while maintaining a binding connection to the Snoop Dogg image. From the Snoop Dogg vape pen and weed, um, tray (?) combo:

To the ‘Rolling Words’ smokable songbook, a book of Snoop Dogg’s lyrics that you can conveniently rip pages out of for your gruff rolling needs:

I’m trying to guess which blunt would taste the foulest; the one rolled with Superman featuring Willie Nelson or the one rolled with Wet.

There’s also Snoop Dogg’s set of pimptacular slippers:

Snoop_House_Shoe_Navy_Top_large

Ok… And here we have Snoop Dogg’s luxurious bag range, for the traveller who wants everyone to know that they have impeccable taste in music and may also be concealing chronic on their person:

10304774_10152288161594807_9012095163847530590_n

I mean, this is really starting to push it here. Is there really any reason for people to associate the name Snoop Dogg with travel bags? And another thing- oh, come on!

10710933_10152591059679807_807541341734663585_nDouble wood 3

Scented. Fucking. Candles.

One of his many Facebook posts about these included the caption “Luv tha smell of baby powder in tha morning!”

The question; it begs: is he a marketing genius? Does plonking his gangsta image upon literally anything at all in the world make it successful?

Or is he certifiably insane?

Okay, the sentiment behind ‘White Guy Todd’ was pretty hilarious, but did you actually see it? He thought ‘turtle neck and David Spade wig’ was part of the hegemonic white male discourse. And it was filmed in the creepiest lighting from a terrible angle and he had this strange look in his eye the entire time. He’s also been embroiled in possibly the lamest Twitter feud since the phrase ‘Twitter feud’ became a thing with Iggy Azalea and somehow losing. To top it all off, if you weren’t 100 per cent certain of the state of Snoop Dogg’s sanity, just take a look at this.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 7.47.05 am

That is a meme. An honest-to-goodness meme that Snoop Dogg made himself and posted to Instagram. In fact, look NO further than Snoop’s entire Instagram for proof of his insanity. Seriously. Follow him for even 24 hours. It is a venture into the cavernous recesses of his mind, where a sentient little nugget of Cali Kush rocks backwards and forwards, howling.

To summarise: Snoop Dogg went from being a gangsta rapper with unfathomable levels of cool to a savant-level venture capitalist purveyor of weirdly terrible social media humour. And it only took 21 years.

Snoop has given me years of fantastic music to listen to (I will run Doggystyle in my car stereo for the rest of time) and he is still capable of coming up with the goods; the Coachella ’12 set ft. him and Dre gives me goosebumps to this day. He’s also reportedly planning his final album under the Dogg moniker and, despite all of the aforementioned evidence to the contrary, I have high hopes that it can be a fitting farewell. Despite the scathing nature of this retrospective, I’ve still got mad love for S.N.Double-O.P. D.O.Double-G. It’s just been more than a little hard to accept that one of my idols is now the George Foreman of the rap game.

Stay tuned to Howl And Echoes for more of Snoop’s wacky antics.

3037752-inline-i-2-how-snoop-dogg-does-investing

I’ve dealt with almost all of the ridiculous antics and unmitigated asshattery Snoop Dogg has forced upon us in recent years, but the above photo from just a few days ago might be the one that actually broke me. When I first began to realise that Snoop Dogg as we know him is long, long gone.

Look at it. Look at Investor Snoop, standing next to the co-founder of Google looking like Carlton after a rough stint inside, or a run-in with a bee hive. What happened?

Look at those glasses, the sleeveless Polo sweater vest, that smug grin. He looks like a guy who builds train sets and collects stamps.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but this is SNOOP we’re talking about.

Why, Snoop? Why?

There’s no point really asking that. Only he knows, and he hasn’t responded to any of my questions on Instagram. It’s more a question of when. Snoop Dogg used to be a pillar of the rap game and then everything just went to hell. And it saddens me.

I’m just trying to pinpoint the exact spot in Snoop Dogg’s career where he reached into his big, blue, diamond-encrusted sack of fucks to give and came up empty.

Pictured: Zero fucks

This is the man who stepped up and didn’t just steal the show from Dr. Dre on The Chronic, he robbed him blind. The man who pioneered the G-funk style of rap and gave us Rhythm And Gangsta, The Doggfather and motherfucking Doggystyle (if you haven’t driven through town blasting G’z And Hustlaz out of rolled-down windows, you’ve scarcely lived). In an era where rap was proliferated with ‘studio gangstas’, this was the man who was once a blue-bleeding member of the Rollin’ 20 Crips. We’re talking about the man who once rapped, ‘Roll up the dank and pour the drank, and watch yo’ step, ’cause Doggy’s on the gank’.

and many other lyrical wonders

The man who gave us the most realistic performance of a wheelchair-bound crack dealer in cinematic history. The man who all but patented C-walking as a means of transportation. Possibly the only living person to ever have OD’d on weed, he’s been arrested for possession of marijuana more times than I’ve had hot dinners. This man.

This man right here

It wasn’t the dawn of the 21st century, when he kind of toned down the whole gangsta image and started dressing, rapping and speaking like a pimp (Can You Control Yo’ Hoe perhaps the zenith). Gangsta to pimp is a pretty seamless transition and probably a necessary one given that Snoop was heading into his thirties and probably hadn’t walked a block on Long Beach for a good number of years. Plus, that era gave us Paid Tha Cost To Be Tha Boss and Rhythm And Gangsta, and I love the holy hell out of those albums.

Personally, I’m tracing it back to his dive bomb into the waters of reality TV around 2007 with Snoop Dogg’s Father Hood. Centred around the zany antics of his family, the episode summaries were along the lines of: ‘Snoop tries to introduce soccer to the kids. Meanwhile, Shante tries to deal with Snoop’s diet’. Yep. This is where Snoop went downhill. Before that, his career had flourished, both critically and commercially, on the foundation that he was some kind of mythical gangsta-pimp-wizard. Father Hood showed the world that Snoop Dogg was really just a swiftly-aging dad and a husband (whose wife just can’t even with his diet). And it unravelled from there.

He started collaborating with people like Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, Too $hort and that sea urchin, Lil Jon. He rapped in a Bollywood film. He was directing his own pornography. He began using AutoTune. He released the concept album Mac And Devin Go To High School (how ‘Snoop Dogg is a high school student’ can be considered a concept and not a nightmare is beyond me) with Wiz Kalifa as well as a pants-shittingly awful accompanying movie.

But it all paled  in comparison though to the sheer lunacy that was his Snoop Lion phase.

Oklahoma City Thunder v Los Angeles Lakers - Game Three

Oh boy. Ohhhhh boy. I can’t tell you how much I both enjoyed and recoiled with horror as this story unfolded. Snoop claimed he had been ‘reincarnated’ by a Rastafarian priest while visiting Jamaica, which was code for ‘I have no ideas left for my next album. Literally none. What’s the most ridiculous thing I can do to get people talking about my music again?’. Of course, Snoop answered that question by changing his stage name to Snoop Lion and releasing Reincarnated, an album constructed entirely of cultural appropriation and the tears of small children. Featuring such gems as La La La, Smoke The Weed and Ashtrays And Heartbreaks (which sounds like the title of a really shitty metalcore song) with Miley Cyrus. Enough fucking said.

Mercifully, his last run of Australian shows as part of the Big Day Out tour featured minimal reggae rap batshittery, but the wounds were deep. We knew Snoop was a pretty money-conscious individual (as anyone who knows the lyrics to Gin And Juice understands), but he’d gone so much further than exploiting his gangsta image to make a buck and instead kind of blatantly exploited the whole Rastafarian movement, Bunny Wailer (of Bob Marley and the Wailers fame, which I don’t even know if there’s a higher level of Rastafarian to be) even called him out on it. The whole thing was a giant farce and Snoop seems to have left the Lion moniker alone. For now.

We discuss Snoop’s stock portfolio and his baffling approach to merchandising in Part Two
