Ever Wondered How Matt Damon Ended Up a Punk Rocker in “EuroTrip”?

Reddit is truly one of greatest wonders of the Internet. Reddit’s latest Reddit AMA (ask me anything) featured none other than Jason Bourne aka Matt Damon, and as far as AMAs go, Damon’s was actually really funny and interesting. It covered everything from his thoughts on being portrayed as a puppet with a some form of mental disability in Team America (the Matt Damon puppet can only say “Matt Damon” and nothing else); on the fact nearly $1 trillion has been spent on rescuing him in his movies; why he hasn’t worked with Ben Affleck in a while. But perhaps one of the more interesting questions asked came from Reddit user dayofthedead204 who asked about Damon’s punk rock cameo in the film EuroTrip.

Surprisingly, it turned out to be “a family affair.”

Damon went to college with the writers of EuroTrip, Alec Berg, Jeff Shaffer, and Dave Mandell. “The three of them are three of the best comedy writers in the world,” Damon said.

“We kind of came up together. I was in Prague shooting The Brothers Grimm,” he went on. “Alec and Dave and Jeff were making EuroTrip and they said, ‘Will you come play this, you know, [Henry] Rollins kind of insane, bad version of a suburban, you know, punk band guy?’ And I said ‘Yea, I’m in Prague.’”

“So I showed up and I’m sitting there, and I’m like ‘I’m wearing a wig, just shave my head, let’s just go for it.’ And we did it, and put a bunch of piercings all over.”

So turns out, one of the catchiest songs of the early 2000s was nothing more than college mates helping each other out. And that party scene, where Matt Damon’s character Donny performs Scotty Doesn’t Know, is actually a Czech house party. “The song was actually written by one of my college roommates’ brothers, and in the band, one of my college roommates is actually in that back up band, Jason, is playing guitar in that group.”

Man, that song is catchy, I had only wanted to write this article here if I could avoid listening to the song. But it didn’t matter because simply writing the words ‘Scotty doesn’t know’ and thinking of Matt Damon’s punk getup has the song stuck in my head anyway.
