Howl & Echoes loves writing about hip-hop, but sometimes we like hearing people talk about it too. There are some really great hip-hop radio programs in Australia, and a stellar selection of female DJs in the studio and behind the decks too.
Melbourne’s Kiss FM runs a weekly hip-hop program called Back to the Future, on Saturday mornings between 10:30 am – 12 pm, created by photographer Michelle Grace Hunder and journalist Louella Deville. Since launching in November last year, they have built a strong reputation for their wicked song selections, championing Australian hip-hop alongside classic tracks and the latest and greatest in international releases, including a healthy blend of female and male artists.
In just over six months, the pair have already interviewed some of the greatest names in the local scene includingRemi and Sensible J (read here), Mantra, Beatrix Kiddo, Fortunes and Juñor, alongside internationals likeOddisee, Golden Rules, Dizzy Wright and G-Eazy (read here).
You can live stream the shows on Saturday morning right here, but fear not if you miss it – you can catch up on each week’s show here.
Following each week’s show we’ll be posting up a playlist featuring the solid picks chosen by our two favourite female selektas.
Here’s last Saturday, May 28!
Sadly not every song is available on Spotify, but you can catch the majority of the tracks here, with the missing tracks listed below.
