Lil Yachty is fast becoming hip-hop’s new rising star. The red-haired Atlanta native has seems to be everywhere of late. He recently released his well received debut mixtape, Lil Boat (read our review here), while also claiming he’s working on a mixtape with Lil B and Soulja Boy. Until then, Yachty is keeping his name in the spotlight with the video for his player anthem 1 Night.
The lyric video starts off like many typically rap clips, with Yachty, wearing a tremendous rainbow coloured jumper, enjoying himself on a yacht with a bevy of beautiful women. That’s when things get weird. Footage of Kanye West‘s Yeezy 3 launch at MSG, the crying Jordan meme, people dabbing and Yachty cradling a kitten are just some of the visuals intercut throughout the video. There are hilarious jabs at alleged philanderers Future, Jay Z and Bill Cosby, while the green screen gets a work out with footage of sharks, an exotic island and The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. There’s also a ton of nautical references, from canoes, tow boats and rafts to life jacket, wet suits and fishing hats.
Watching the clip is a sensory overload of pop culture and Internet references that’ll no doubt lead to a slew of new memes and gifs the social media world will eat up. My best advice is just watch the clip and marvel at the wonder of Lil Yachty in all his weird and fascinating glory.
