LISTEN: Mallrat, “Sunglasses”

Mallrat is an upcoming artist out of Brisbane, Australia. Sunglasses is her second track, following on from her wonderful debut Suicide Blonde, which came out in July. At the ripe young age of 17, she’s already making something of a name for herself with her unique melodies and endearingly teen-centric lyrics and atmosphere.

Sunglasses is cool and catchy, featuring production from Tigerilla, who has worked with Aussie rappers Allday and Baro, as well as producing Mallrat’s first single. I love the simplicity of the rhythm and instrumentation, with its bouncy beat and stompy rhythm. It’s the kind of track that immediately gets stuck in your head, but that’s nothing to complain about.

We’re not exactly sure what to make of this, but the artist has explained the origin behind the track: “I wrote this song at my favourite burger shop when I should have been at school.” I guess lots of people were wearing sunglasses at the time? Either way, the track is killer.

This track is so much fun — the perfect track to kick off an already-sweltering Australian summer. An exciting new voice in upcoming Australian talent, I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from Mallrat in 2016.
