For those who like a little inspiration with a chilled can of Sprite, you will be pleased to learn that the company has released a limited line of cans complete with 16 classic rap lyrics. The campaign ‘Obey Your Verse’ will be rolled out during the American summer, with verses sourced from previous spokespeople Drake, Nas, The Notorious B.I.G. and Rakim.
In line with the campaign, which is a spin on the company’s tagline ‘Obey Your Thirst’, Drake and Nas have co-starred in a commercial that debuted at the NBA Finals a few days ago. The ad pulls footage from Drake and Nas’ February concert during the NBA All-Star Weekend. With Drake’s O To 100 setting the theme, the ad matches up the newly minted cans with the lyrics.
Other lyrics commissioned for the cans include Biggie’s One More Chance (“Lyrically I’m supposed to represent”), Drake’s Started From The Bottom amongst four others, and another five from Nas including The World is Yours.
Although few people may associate the bubbly soft drink with rappers, Sprite has long been associated with rappers – going all the way back to 1986. Currently, the brand has associations with artists including Kendrick Lamar, and hopes to roll out their ‘Obey the Verse’ further according to Kimberly Paige, vice-president of Sprite Brands (via Billboard):
“We’re gonna look at everything we do and how to bring it life in the marketplace, which will unfold over the next couple of weeks.”
But really, what more could you want than to read “Started from the bottom” every time you down a Sprite?
