Apple has agreed to raise the prices in Germany for hand-held devices including iPhones and iPads in a landmark deal that will benefit those in the creative industry including musicians, actors – even pornographic filmmakers.
The deal comes as a result of a new copyright levy, in which Apple, Samsung and other similar tech giants agreed to pay approximately EUR 5-7 (roughly $5.50 – $7.70) for each device imported into Germany. It will allegedly apply for all devices sold after 2008 and tablets after 2012.
The levy works to subsidise the creative industry for the devices that contribute to the industry of copying material for free. Ideally, these companies want to move away from fixed surcharges as subscriptions services such as Spotify gain traction, but ultimately as long as there’s devices such as smartphones, free sharing will likely always occur.
These types of laws are not new to Germany though, with the Government tacking on an additional surcharge when you buy blank CDs to account for the private copies people will presumably making of entertainment material.
While this might not be the solution to the seemingly unending problems of streaming and piracy facing the music and film industry (and porn apparently), it provides a much needed boost, in Germany at least.
It’s been alleged that Lana Del Rey has successfully obtained a pair of restraining orders against two Russian girls who reportedly are so obsessed with her that Del Rey fears for her life.
The pair have allegedly “hunted her down”, put violent and threatening letters in her mailbox and even threatened suicide, TMZ reports.
According to TMZ, Del Rey has even hired a full-time bodyguard and off duty LAPD officers to protect her from them and other fans, and even prompted her to move house to shake them – to no avail.

Nataliia Krinitsyna and Iuliia Vladimirovna will now be forced to stay 100 yards clear of Lana and her home. Whether this prevents them from attending any of her live shows in unclear, which presumably would be the ultimate of punishments for a pair of super-fans.
It follows a tumultuous few months for Del Rey, whose 2013 Jaguar Xk was allegedly stolen from her house just a few weeks after a man was discovered living in her garage.
Despite dropping her acclaimed fourth album Honeymoon this year, there’s no tour yet on the cards, much less a tour to Australia. Hopefully now she can get started planning one.
Notorious ‘hacktivist’ group Anonymous have turned their burning gaze toward The Prodigy’s Keith Flint after he allegedly went fox hunting recently.
In their free time between hunting the most feared global terrorists Islamic State, Anonymous has found time to put together a YouTube video calling Flint a “traitorous fuckwit”.
“It has come to our attention that Keith has a fetish for murdering animals. It has come to our attention that Keith has been rubbing shoulders with Tory criminals whilst out fox hunting,” the masked man decries in the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhuUhzH0o_k
According to ever reliable sources at the Daily Mail, Flint “has embarked on a new life as a country gent and been spotted riding out with his local hunt,” reporting that Flint has bought several hunting horses and “is the talk of the Essex hunting circles.”
Anonymous have warned that Flint has one year to clean up his act after reneging on his long held anti-establishment values.
Predictably shitting himself, Flint has released a statement via The Prodigy’s Facebook page making it clear that no animals were hurt.
https://www.facebook.com/theprodigyofficial/posts/10153852460883249
Coincidently (or not), The Prodigy’s most recent album The Day Is My Enemy featured an urban fox in its artwork.
Let’s hope that’s the only photo of a fox, dead or alive, on his computer – because Anonymous is sure to check.
Kid Cudi has never attempted to hide his obsession with Star Wars, going so far as to even audition for the latest instalment The Force Awakens. Yet despite being tragically unsuccessful, like any devout fan, he’s doing his best to help edge the movie closer to the most successful of all time (not that it needs much help). On the weekend, he invited his fans to a private screening of The Force Awakens to fans who brought along some of his merchandise or a copy of his album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmvU3urYQgI
“Do you love Star Wars?” he posted on Twitter. “Do you love me? Would you wanna see Star Wars: Force Awakens tonight with me, my treat?”
“Why am I doing this? It’s Star Wars. Why not! And I thought it would be cool to start the year off watching a great film for the 3rd time with some great company.”
https://twitter.com/KidCudi/status/683523115310120960?lang=en
Fans were predictably thrilled, earning an opportunity to rub shoulders with the man himself, who also signed Kid Cudi merchandise – and even lightsabers. After the screening, fans took to Twitter to show their gratitude:

It’s not the first time Kid Cudi has reached out to his fans in such an unusual way. Late last year he held a heartfelt TED Talk in his hometown about his struggles with mental illness.
Purity Ring have long held a deep obsession with light shows. In fact their live shows are as known for the thousands of tiny globes that adorn their stage as they are for their ethereal electronic music.
Continuing along this grain, they’ve dropped another song from their latest album another eternity and an accompanying video for heartsigh. The video features this familiar light show, essentially mirroring their typical live show. To spice it up a little, they’ve added some cavorting aliens dressed in white, flowing costumes who shadow lead singer Megan James’ every move as well as adding some beautiful shots of the out-of-worldly landscape.
“The video consists of the many elements we have created and chosen to express in a live context, but has an added sightline of being in another world, keeping the past in arms with the present and holding a bit of magic in the dark,” Megan James said in a press release.
The light show features “Submergence”, an art piece from the British collective Squidsoup made up of 2 500 LED lights. Especially look out for Corin Roddick’s pad set fashioned from crystallised flashing lanterns.

When Adele emerged from the shadows and said Hello to a new album, expectations were predictably high. Since the release of 25, Adele has been on a mission to trash every record in the industry, starting off with the fastest selling record in history. Case in point, she outsold Coldplay‘s new album by three to one in her third week on the charts, making it Coldplay’s only album not to debut at number one.
When she isn’t one-upping her contemporaries, she is also promoting her new album – not that it needs it. Now, her special Adele: Live in New York City has been made available online (to US audiences only, or those with a VPN). The performance is her first full concert in four years.
She kicks off the performance with her current single Hello, before cycling through some of her old hits such as Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You and Set Fire to the Rain. She also glided through some of her new material, including her rumoured next single When We Were Young, which evoked a spontaneous standing ovation and tears from Adele. She also debuted All I Ask for the first time live, a Billy Joel-inspired tune co-written by Bruno Mars.
For most of the performance, a considerable orchestra and a host of backup singers bolstered her, although she proved once more that her voice alone is enough to fill a stadium. Yet she confided in the audience that even she still gets nervous.
“I’m so nervous,” she said. “I was trying to find the nearest exit before I came down, trying to leg it down.”
As always, it wouldn’t be an Adele performance without a cackle or two and a few choice swear words.
“It’s fucking hard to sing,” she said of her 25 tracks All I Ask and Hello.
Somehow Adele, I don’t think anyone noticed.

Five months after shutting its historic doors, Sydney’s inner west venue the Imperial Hotel reopened last night, albeit with a limited capacity.
News Corp Australia reports that the Erskineville hotel has some big plans in store, including Australia’s first “gay and lesbian rooftop chapel”. The announcement follows the historically strong ties the hotel has had with the LGBTI community.
“We are not just thinking about the local community but also the gay and lesbian community who have had strong ties to the space for many, many years,” The Imperial’s Communications Manager Mr Kassas said.
“We would love to see couples tie the knot and in the future it would be amazing to see same-sex marriage offered across Australia. The fact we could be championing it here is great.”
“We have personified the venue and she is definitely female and she is a woman who has seen so much over the years and she will definitely be a venue that will be championing change by working together with the community.”
So far, only the ground floor will be opened under new owners Fraser Short and Scott Leach. Back in August, the venue was sold for an estimated $6.5 million. The owners have said that while the pub will continue its LGBTI roots, it will also be moving in a new direction, beginning with a ‘Small Bar Edition’ which will have a stronger focus on cocktails. This follows the news earlier this year that the venue was likely to be transformed into a high end dining venue.
“The front bar will be open and so will the cabaret room which we have changed to the Sweet Escape. We will again be working with notable people like Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour who have a lot of history at the venue,” Mr Kassas said.
“We have taken the steps not to open the basement bar yet in order to work out what will be suitable in that space.”
The owners have also stated that they are working with gay musicians and promoters on future events. However, the venue will have to overcome its problematic and illegal past to regain its popularity. The previous owner Mr Danesi leased the venue to Spice International earlier this year, only for the police to raid the premises several times and allegedly find staff using illicit drugs, a male patron licking spilt alcohol from the floor and another patron buying drugs. This led to numerous enforced closures and eventually, a full hiatus.
However, with new owners and an inspirational rooftop marriage plan that seems in line with its LGBTI history, it seems The Imperial is headed for better and more lucrative days.

Every year hordes of young people emerge from their New Years hangovers to embrace Sydney’s New Years Day festival Field Day. With just three weeks until the big day, Field Day have released their set times and final lineup.
This year Field Day have nabbed some excellent talent including Disclosure, Flight Facilities, The Wombats, Golden Features, Django Django, SAFIA, Skepta, Snakehips and RL Grime. Unfortunately, as with any one-day festival, there are some merciless, heartbreaking clashes across the four stages – so anyone planning to head down should get serious about planning. Punters will have to choose between Allday and Ngaiire, Skepta and SAFIA, Ta-ku, Young Fathers and Daniel Avery, Golden Features and The Avener, and more. The closing set will also be a tough decision for some, between electronic giants Disclosure spinning their new album, or Aussie young guns San Cisco.
Thankfully for most fans, the festival has avoided clashing the three biggest artists, as Flight Facilities, The Wombats and Disclosure can technically all be seen without overlapping. Yet as any experienced festival attendee knows, trying to jump from stage to stage is risky business when dealing with 10 000 other people who also had your brilliant idea.
As always, there are a few hidden gems that will inevitably be overlooked. Sliding in early at 12.30 on the second stage known as ‘The Island’, is Triple J Unearthed winner Jess Kent. After ripping one of the year’s most infectious tracks with Get Down, she’ll be appearing in her first festival slot, so drag yourself out of that NYE slumber and catch the best early.
Happy planning people.

In recent months the tension in the Spotify headquarters must have risen to critical level. First there was Taylor Swift, the queen of pop, who first refused to release her chart dominating 1989 album on Spotify, citing that the streaming service did not fairly pay artists for their work. Now in recent months, the world’s biggest artist Adele likewise refused to release her insanely hyped third album 25 on the service, just as Coldplay likewise refused to allow their recent album Head Full of Dreams to be streamed.
Spurred by this trio of toxic boycotts, it seems Spotify is considering changing their policy to lure back some of the world’s biggest artists. Currently, Spotify’s policy dictates no difference in content between their free and paid service. Wall Street Journal is reporting that they will soon move to restrict content for the free service, so albums from artists such as Taylor Swift will only be available to paid subscribers. Back in November, The Verge reported that this model is exactly what Adele asked for when releasing 25 and was denied. Adele has since come forward and blamed the lack of streaming on her old fashioned nature and desire to keep her music in traditional forms.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQHsXMglC9A
Although the sources are not explicit in the Wall Street Journal article, if it were true, it would be a major back down for the world’s biggest streaming service. It wouldn’t be the first time Taylor Swift has single handedly prompted a major reform for streaming services, after Apple Music reformed their policy that artists would not be paid for any albums streamed in the 3 month trial period.
While these artists claim that their boycott of streaming services is an altruistic move to support paying artists properly for their work, it is increasingly becoming a weapon for chart success. Taylor Swift dominated the 2014 charts with 1989, with many arguing that the lack of free streaming meant that far more people would have bought the album than if it were available on streaming services. The same can be said for Adele, who absolutely shattered first week sales records. On a small scale, streaming may in fact have helped these global artists, as streaming has decimated the illegal downloading market with most people relying on cheap and easy streaming services. Yet once this is unavailable for certain albums, it may be that people head back to legal means of purchasing albums rather than downloading illegally – leading to even greater album sales. Studies seems to suggest something similar, with streaming not really helping nor hindering the music industry generally.
Yet for those smaller artists who would gain nothing from boycotting their albums from Spotify, they must continue to rely on paltry album sales and embark on more frequent tours as the music industry continues to morph under technological change.
EDIT: Since publishing this piece, we’ve been asked to add in this statement from Spotify:
We are 100 percent committed to our model because we believe that a free, ad-supported tier combined with a more robust premium tier is the best way to deliver music to fans, create value for artists and songwriters, and grow the industry. In that context, we explored a wide range of promotional options for the new Coldplay album and ultimately decided, together with management, that Coldplay and its fans would best be served with the full album on both free and premium this Friday. – Jonathan Prince, Spotify’s Global Head of Communications and Public Policy.
As the end of year lists start rolling in and bombarding our news feeds, the producer of the year accolades is one award that is often overlooked. Today, SPIN named Jamie xx as their pick, after he released his critically acclaimed and kick-ass record In Colour this year.
The album can lay claim to being one of the most beloved electronic albums of the year, and one of the best albums of the year generally – one that has been featuring near the top of every end of year list.
Jamie xx first tasted success as drummer and producer in The xx, but has really bloomed into his own as a solo artist. Since marking his own path, he has been gaining popularity and chart success left, right and centre, thanks to hisseamless synth creations, genre-bending productions which blend soaring vocals, hip-hop, a myriad instruments and synths into neat and compelling packages. Few can deny the explosiveness of the runaway track I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) ft. Young Thug and Popcaan.

Luckily for us, Jamie xx is headed our way for the Aussie summer, with a string of festivals and sideshows to wrap our ears around.
