OITNB’s Lea DeLaria covers David Bowie on Conan

I’ll admit: I may only recently have become an Orange is the New Black convert. But I can safely say that Big Boo is my favourite character. Hands down. Imagine my excitement then, when I heard that Lea DeLaria, who portrays Boo on the Netflix hit, is also a jazz singer with five records under her belt.

When she’s not playing prison badass Boo, DeLaria has been a jazz singer (and comedian) for some years. Check our her albums here – she’s got a killer voice and a knack for deep, bluesy jazz. The stuff of late-night, smoke-filled dive bars.

She appeared on Conan this week to speak about OITNB’s recent season 3 premiere, as well as her upcoming album. House Of David features 12 cover songs of the legend’s iconic tunes. Of course, the conversation largely involved talking about her love for Bowie – and his tight, tight tights in Labyrinth:

In the video below, you can see Lea DeLaria provide O’Brien with a baseline to sing (which he did so in a graciously hilarious fashion, including mimicking various instruments), before showing off some insanely impressive chops as she sits back and belts out the song.
