Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has just won a Golden Globe award for his incredible FX series Atlanta, in the Best Music or Comedy Television Program category.
Atlanta was easily one of the year’s best new television shows, praised for its unrelenting and realistic portrayal of life in Atlanta, including a look at artists in the hip-hop industry, family life, and more.
Update: Glover has also won the Best Actor award for Atlanta. In his acceptance speech, he thanks his family, revealing for the first time that his newborn child is a son. “I really want to say thank you to my son and the mother of my son for making me believe in people again and things being possible. So thank you,”

Glover’s program, which has already been renewed for a second season, was competing with Transparent, Black-ish, Veep and Mozart in the Jungle. This was Glover’s first ever nomination – he’s also up for Best Actor in the same category.
Watch his acceptance speech below: “This is incredible,” he said, before thanking FX, the cast, the writing team and everybody else, who he brought up on stage with him. “I really want to thank Atlanta, and all the black folks in Atlanta, just for being alive and being amazing people. I could’t be here without Atlanta. And I really I’d like to thank the Migos—not for being on the show, but for making Bad and Boujee, that’s the best song ever.”
“We didn’t think anyone was gonna like this show, so we appreciate it, thanks,” he ended.

The artist enjoyed a massive 2016 – not only did Atlanta smash several records and receive universal acclaim, he also released a tremendous new album, Awaken, My Love!, and was cast to play a young Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars film.

After 24 glorious years, Falls Festival continues to provide us with the most unforgettable moments across the New Year festivus. The 2016-17 lineup saw some major international names, as well as our best local acts rounding up another year in style. In Byron Bay, it was a balmy 33 degrees across the three day event and climaxed with a torrential downpour for the very last performances on day three.
Day one got the party started with festival favourites Northeast Party House, Hot Dub Time Machine and Client Liaison, who have time and time again proven that they know how to get the crowd going better than just about anyone. Joining them was the one and only scratch maestro and hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash, who, at 59 years young, showed off his skills to the young crowd. Ringing in the new year, the legend that is Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino brought his phenomenal new funk album Awaken, My Love! to life, as well as delivering a bunch of his older hip-hop tracks to keep the rap-loving fans in check.
In this gallery you will find Northeast Party House, Mallrat, Spit Syndicate, Client Liaison, Broods, Grandmaster Flash, Hot Dub Time Machine and Childish Gambino.

Childish Gambino’s latest album Awaken, My Love came as a surprise to many. Ditching his classic R&B rap ways, he managed to delve into a deep soul and funk infused sound, channeling the sounds he was exposed to in his younger years. Gambino hasn’t shied away from disclosing his influences, namely the major Parliament-Funkadelic influence, therefore how does George Clinton, the mastermind behind the legendary outfits feel?
Talking to Hip Hop DX, Clinton revealed he has indeed listened to it, and he is a fan. “I just heard it [Awaken, My Love] one time and I like the songs. I’m aware of his music and know he’s into P-Funk so I know it’s going to be some good music.”
The compliments didn’t end there, with the legend making some huge comparisons which place Gambino next to legends, “I haven’t had a chance to get all the way into it, but when I did hear it, it sounded like a cross between P-Funk and Prince influence. I’m proud that he’s into the funk and glad him and others are bringing some new funk back.”
This all comes soon after Questlove called D’Angelo at 4am just to tell him to listen to the album because it’s that good. So whether or not the rap fans will accept the new Gambino, it looks like he’s found immense respect among funk and soul legends.
Currently George Clinton is hard at work contributing to Flying Lotus’ next project, alongside working on the upcoming Parliament album Medicaid Fraud Dog, the first since 2014.
Childish Gambino touches down in Australia in just over a week, performing at this year’s Falls Festival in Byron Bay, Marion Bay, Lorne and Fremantle and Field Day in Sydney.

Being December, most people already have their best of lists and top tens of the year set in stone. But 2016 is the year that just keeps on giving as all hell broke loose in the last week, especially for hip-hop fans. The release of no less than four absolutely cracking albums from Childish Gambino, Smoke DZA and Pete Rock, J. Cole and Ab-Soul all filling our stockings with early Christmas gifts.
Childish Gambino – Awaken, My Love!
Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino threw everyone a curve ball two weeks ago when he dropped his slick AF LP Awaken, My Love! No one believed him when said he was going to ditch hip-hop, but as the psychedelic yearning melodies revealed to us in single Me and Your Mama which were expanded upon throughout his entire release. It’s already drawn comparisons to Tame Impala and Radiohead but I think that takes a little a bit away from what Glover has achieved himself on this album. The level of production is sublime, really sublime. Second single Redbone pulsates with electro synth that transcends both the artist and listener to unfamiliar places. From the ambient and uplifting high end to the downright funky on the low end, you find yourself engulfed in the album. California blips and bops all over the shop and Riot sort of feels like a poor man’s James Brown interpretation resulting in the album being a little disjointed, but don’t let that take away from the record. Baby Boy drips with soul and although some might call cringe-worthy the hook in Stand Tall is as catchy and bumpy as anything. Despite the commercial success commercial success of his last two attempts at hip-hop records, this album is one Gambino can really claim as his first real crack at making something his own. Many will love it and many will hate it. I did have a sceptical predisposition but I think this is pretty fucking good album.

Smoke DZA & Pete Rock – Don’t Smoke Rock
It may have been a little overshadowed by the former, but Smoke DZA teamed up with beatmaker Pete Rock to drop a stomper of an album on the same day, Don’t Smoke Rock. With names like BJ The Chicago Kid, Dom Kennedy and Wale appearing on a record, it melds old-school beat architecture with new-wave ideas and flows. Black Car Superhero featuring Rick Ross bangs like the classics of the 90s and Royce Da 5’9”, along with DZA, impressively hold it down on the skinless Hold The Drums. The most refreshing part about this album is that Smoke DZA has managed to escape the weed smoking bravado stereotype on this LP. A topic he has done to death, this album has more substance and punch, making it a really engaging listen. I do realise my own hypocrisy as I point to the awesome collaboration with Mac Miller on the album closer Until Then, which kicks off with a quote from classic stoner movie Friday, but the flow on the album closer is undeniable.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTCrE0C8v54&w=560&h=315]
J. Cole – 4 Your Eyez Only
The entirely solo 10 track follow up project to 2014’s Forest Hills Drive has been eagerly anticipated; with rumours of potential collaborations throwing around names like Kanye, Kendrick and Wale how could it not be? But 4 Your Eyez Only is once again a J. Cole only affair.
The intense intro tune For Whom The Bell Tolls immediately shapes the album as a product of a hopeless and self-depreciating headspace, also showing us Jermaine putting his pipes to the test. The 31 year-old continues to pick away at select heart-strings in Change. A message of self-realisation converted into a cry for a switch in community attitudes over a funky beat with the help of Ari Lennox (signed to Cole’s label) on the melodic bridge.
Both She’s Mine tracks, Part 1 and Part 2, consolidate Cole’s mind state as his spoken word delves into his own life and love in comparison to everyone else over stripped back classical keys. So given the album context you can understand why a track like Foldin’ Clothes was included, but you can’t help but giggle to yourself at the cheesy lyrics. Sometimes its grounding to be relatable, and sometimes it’s just plain boring. “Raisin brand in my bowl with bananas and some almond milk / I never thought I’d see the day I’m drinking almond milk.”….. nah.
Ab-Soul – Do What Thou Wilt
We already had some insight into what to expect from the TDE member’s fourth studio album Do What Thou Wilt, with the release of singles Huey Knew, Braille featuring Bas and D.R.U.G.S, and last week we received the whole damn thing.
Straight off the bat, the often slept-on Black Hippy trash talker calls a (Raw) Backwards on all rappers over an ambient and building beat which fills you with the same real intensity as playing the James Bond: Golden Eye on your ‘Tendo ’64. The kind of intensity the album really feeds off as sometimes it can lyrically go begging.
There is no denying the production on this record and the West-Coast rappers ability to create a party, which was oh so evident in all three singles. Threatening Nature (leaked a few days ago) also boasts a crisp drum line which leaves room for Soulo to make his mark vocally. On Beat The Case///Straight Cooked featuring ScHoolboy Q, the track really shines toward the end, when the beat switches up to a synthy boom bap and Ab-Soul really lays down some bars with some substance beyond his high-life living.
Even in Now You Know, Ab-Soul shows glimpses of his ability to spit verses with wistful clarity but as many of the numbers on this LP do it leaves quite a bit to the imagination. The stabby snares cutting in and fading out periodically will make a crowd bounce but to release a 16-track piece of work there needs to be a level of cohesion which I cannot seem to grasp on this record. He is definitely not a dude to be slept on, this album will be big but I expected more.

Let’s hope this roll keeps on keeping on into 2017.
Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover has released the first visual accompaniment to his funky new album Awaken, My Love!. It comes in the form of a 360 degree, virtual reality video recording of Me And Your Mama, captured at his own PHAROS event in Joshua Tree, California, earlier this year, where attendees were given the world premiere of his new material.
The news follows the recent reveal that the album was available as a virtual reality vinyl, which Gambino recently explained to offer viewers an immersive visual experience, allowing those in far flung places (like Australia) to watch concerts they would otherwise miss. Pre-orders of the limited edition package will also be able to access more VR content from the PHAROS event in the future.
Yesterday, Childish Gambino delivered his first post-release interview to our very own Matt and Alex on triple j, where he spoke about the difficulties of making the album, and confirming that he will most likely play older material at his live shows, depending on what the audience is feeling.
Watch the video, which was directed and co-produced by Microsoft and Wolf + Rothstein. You can toggle the view by simply clicking and moving on the video.
Gambino dances around wearing tribal paint and a straw skirt, with a full band, floor-length hair and dazzling colours that seem to evoke the Northern Lights atop and behind him. If you scroll up to watch the ceiling, you’ll see a few more interesting signs….

It has also been announced that Gambino will be appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon next Wednesday, December 14, so keep an eye out for more of what to expect live.
Childish Gambino will be heading down under at the end of this month to perform at Falls Festival in Byron Bay, Marion Bay, Lorne and Fremantle, and Field Day in Sydney.

In a new interview with soon-to-be-ex-triple j breakfast hosts Matt and Alex, Childish Gambino has spoken about his fantastic new album Awaken, My Love! and his upcoming appearances at Falls Festival and Field Day.
Speaking to the pair about his musical progression, Glover explained that he didn’t always want to make this music, or that he’d planned anything specific; rather it “felt appropriate.” Referring to the album being described as a “sucker punch,” he said, “I like sucker punches. I like being what you’re not expecting. The feeling of expecting water and getting lemonade, I like that.”
Interestingly, he talks about how there’s no vocal pitching on the album. About the track California, he even said that many of the percussive sounds on the track weren’t an instrument at all, but his own voice (and he gives an example at 3:15).
The conversation turns to performing the new music live, which Glover described as “incredible.”
“I think the audience [at PHAROS] were taken away. We took phones away so nobody was recording the entire time, and we didn’t fill it to capacity. There was enough space for people to dance and run around… so it kind of felt like you were still outside.”
Although the album oozes energy and fun, “it was actually really hard,” he admitted. “I was going through a lot… I was trying to display what I felt.”
The new album has left fans divided, as it’s a major departure away from hip-hop. Fans of funk and soul have hailed it a masterpiece (including Questlove, who claims to have woken up D’Angelo at 4 am to tell him how amazing it is), but those who were hoping for rapping are less than impressed. So there will no doubt be a few relieved fans, with the news that Gambino is open to performing older tunes alongside his new album, although it totally depends on the crowd. “I like talking to my audience,” he said. “I really do like seeing how they feel. If we’re all feeling it, I have no problem playing some of the old stuff, I think that stuff is really cool.”
He also talks about the virtual reality vinyl, playing Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars spin-off, collaborating with producer Ludwig Goransson.

Attendees of Falls Festival and Field Day will be among the first on the planet to catch the new music live. It previously debuted at Glover’s own PHAROS event in Joshua Tree, California, but no further live dates had been announced up until Falls over the New Years period.

Childish Gambino‘s new album Awaken, My Love! is here.
The album, his third, was only announced a few weeks ago, and we have since been blessed with two stunning singles, Me And Your Mama and Redbone. Each showcased a side to Donald Glover’s music that nobody was expecting until recently – soul, blues and funk inspired by iconic ’70s artists Funkadelic and Sly & The Family Stone.
The title had not been revealed yet, but Awaken, My Love! was previewed in September for audiences across three days, at Glover’s PHAROS event/festival in Joshua Tree, California. Attendees took to social media to describe the new music, many noting the huge, melodic, soulful sound, a far cry from the anticipated hip-hop.
Interestingly, he’s not the only one to premiere new music like that. Back in August, Bon Iver also previewed his new album at his own festival – two months before it was actually released.
The 11-track album was also made available for pre-order a few days ago. One of the items for sale is a virtual reality vinyl, although exactly what that means is anyone’s guess right now. Take that, Jack White!
Without further ado, please enjoy Childish Gambino’s new album, Awaken, My Love!

It’s just about to tick over into December, which means one thing: we’re less than a month from the 24th annual Falls Festival. With just a few weeks of shitty Christmas carols and resisting the urge to murder everyone at your local Westfield who also decided to buy presents at the last minute in a rain of blood, we took a breather to look at the acts on the bill you should, nay, must see lest you want future generations to snicker when you try to tell them tales of your Falls experiences that don’t include:
Childish Gambino
Gambino’s return to Australia is set to be meteoric in scale. The man is about to release what is sure to be one of the top contenders for album of the year this Friday in the long, long LOOOOOONG anticipated Awaken, My Love!, and what we’ve heard of it already has us dribbling.
His set at Falls will be one of the first chances for fans anywhere in the world to cop a big old earful of new material in a live environment, plus you just know that amphitheatre is going to be absolutely seething to the likes of solidified belters like Bonfire, Freaks And Geeks and 3005 among swathes of others.
He’s not playing a single sideshow either, so if you go to Falls and don’t see Childish Gambino, we can’t be responsible for the twisted ruin your soul becomes in the coming years as it shrivels with regret.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp7eSUU9oy8
Jamie T
Having not been spotted since a goosebump-inducing set at last year’s Splendour In The Grass is London vagabond Jamie T. With his latest album Trick up his sleeve, the inimitably-accented rocker is back for summer to captivate audiences once again.
You may remember him from yell-along hits such as Sheila, Sticks And Stones and Zombie among many others, but if you’ve never seen him live and you do at Falls, you’ll remember him from the shivers you get up and down your spine thinking back to that moment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEQXJQn8LZg
Grandmaster Flash
The crafty veteran of the bill is the granddaddy of the decks in Grandmaster fucking Flash. Seriously, it’s 2016 and Grandmaster Flash is on a festival bill. What a time to be alive.
The man has seen damn near everything in hip-hop since its genesis. I’m not sure if he’ll be making his entrance from a beam of light bursting down through the heavens but such is his myth that it’s more than likely.
His set will be full of vintage hip-hop for the soul, but let’s face it, if you don’t make it your business to bask in the glory of The Message played live, you will have to look St. Peter in the eye one day and tell him why he should let you into heaven when you already passed up the chance to be there once before.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYMkEMCHtJ4
Bernard Fanning
Do you feel that? It’s elation, it’s ecstasy, it’s euphoria… it’s the unofficial Emperor of Queensland Bernard Fanning. Yes, there’ll be heat-induced visions of Milton Mangoes and Castlemaine Cranberries by the Brown Snake with the 1994 Maroons re-enacting their Miracle Try as the singer-songwriter-sacred deity takes to the stage guitar in hand at this year’s Falls to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that none of us are worthy.
One of the few bonafide legends of Australian rock still making noise today, miss Bernard Fanning live and be condemned to a lifetime of being jersey-slung out of bed by Gorden Tallis every morning instead of an alarm clock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYlyghmTSIU
MØ
Danish sensation MØ (fun fact, that’s actually pronounced ‘Mer’) might be best known for her vocal contributions to that one Major Lazer song that became a small hit, but she’s a pop star in her own right as well, with stunning solo album No Mythologies To Follow an absolute ripper.
Possessed of a badass swagger and a bloody great set of pipes on top, prepare to get absolutely lost in the MØ live experience. Just see if you can even begin to handle the pure pop rapture that is Kamikaze at any rate, you’ll be hooked for life.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVD9j36Ke94
Marlon Williams
Yet another Kiwi export that Australia will no doubt be claiming for its own very soon is smoky crooner Marlon Williams. If you’re looking for a change of pace from a frenetic Falls to a laidback lounge in the grass, you’d do well to catch Williams, whose 2015 self-titled debut set hearts aflutter and saw swooning rates increase by 600% (approximately).
Williams is a throwback that’ll stop you in your tracks, and with three days of being absolutely buckled to push your way through, it’s so important to take some time out to chill here and there. Let Marlon Williams be the soundtrack to at least one of those brief periods of peace.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow8qMY8JkR0
Client Liaison
Speaking of throwbacks, Melbourne’s Client Liaison do late 80s/early 90s dance pop better than anybody on this planet. They’ll be riding into Falls in an off-white limousine (probably) and pulling out all the stops onstage. These guys are showmen to the bone (frontman Monte Morgan a true treasure) and their set will be absolutely wild.
With a debut album’s worth of new material to light up the night with from this year’s Diplomatic Immunity, (Canberra Won’t Be Calling Tonight ought to bring the house down the moment that first kookaburra starts warbling, as will Wild Life and World Of Our Love from that same album), expect elaborate stage props and costumes, choreographed dancing and glorious, tear-inducing saxophone solos.
Client Liaison live aren’t just a pick-me-up, they’re a grab-you-by-the-collar-and-throw-you-into-the-galaxy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XnyF-tDia4
City Calm Down
An enthralling live act, Melbourne’s City Calm Down have been one of Australia’s biggest breakout acts of the last year since sophomore record In A Restless House first exploded onto the national consciousness.
Post-punk in the vein of The Cure (frontman Jack Bourke’s wide-ranging vocals eerily reminiscent of Robert Smith), the City Calm Down boys bring their sprawling sound from record to stage with razor sharp precision and professionalism and leave audiences breathless. They’re known for a blisteringly honest cover of Bowie’s Let’s Dance and their own signature tunes in Rabbit Run, Son and the anthemic Your Fix always leave a crowd breathless.
City Calm Down are a group on the upswing and there doesn’t look like a zenith in plain sight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26AQCCQKkcc
Grouplove
If you like unbridled joy, superhuman levels of energy and dancing, all of the dancing, then California’s Grouplove will unquestionably be for you. They too have a brand new album this year in big hit Big Mess and they’ll no doubt be bringing a sizeable horde of fans to life with good vibes exploding from the sound system.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNDXUhKFPA4
Catfish And The Bottlemen
Having an outstanding year are blue-chip Welsh rock and rollers Catfish And The Bottlemen. Their latest album The Ride has been thrilling and chilling auditory senses and uppercutting everyone directly in the feels since its release earlier in 2K16. They’re back to turn it up to 11 in Australia once again and their loud, evocative rock and roll is nigh on perfect for a summer festival.
If you don’t drunkenly sway while holding a pair of Extra Drys aloft and off-key bellowing the chorus to 7, were you even at Falls?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ibv5N70ncsk
If you’re of the opinion that this list is lacking a little in Aussie talent, not to worry. Keep an eye out for our list of Aussie Acts to Catch at this year’s Falls Festival coming soon.

This is just a friendly public service announcement to remind you that Childish Gambino, also known as actor, writer, director and future Lando Calrissian, Donald Glover, is releasing his new album this Friday December 2. It’s called Awaken, My Love! which sounds more like a Sufjan Stevens song than the follow-up to previous albums Camp (2011) and Because the Internet (2013). Regardless, we’re pretty confident that it’s going to be quite special.
With the album just days away, we wanted to provide a little cheat sheet recounting everything we know about it so far.
- It’s clearly going to be a step away from the hip-hop sounds many may have expected. From what we’ve heard so far, this is not such a bad thing. Our first inclination of this shift came after Gambino debuted the new album live at an event titled PHAROS earlier this year, a kind of musical festival thing that took place across three days in Joshua Tree, California. The reactions from punters were overwhelmingly positive about the new sound – although not without a few unsatisfied customers.
- The album will contain eleven tracks (full tracklist below), two of which have been released so far. Me And Your Mama is straight up one of the top ten, if not five songs of 2016 so far. It’s wild, it channels Alabama Shakes, it’s huge, it’s fucking glorious, with blues and gospel influences at every turn. Second single Redbone similarly steps away from hip-hop, focusing more on groovy synths, psychedelia and a high pitched vocal tone, further pushing that ’70s sound.
- The songs aren’t all totally new – in early 2015, Gambino performed Me And Your Mama at Bonnaroo Festival. Watch it here.
- The cover art for the album came out along with the official announcement, although it had secretly been put on display during a recent episode of his excellent FX TV show Atlanta.
https://twitter.com/donaldglover/status/796561327154196480
- This is the back cover:
- The official announcement came just weeks before the release. It was immediately preceded by the title showing up on a sign in a record store and online ahead of time – whether this was a mistake or a guerrilla marketing tactic is unknown.
- Only one interview about the album has been published so far.
- In it, he reveals that he works on his music and TV career at the exact same time, in a house, which he prefers to using an office.
- He also says that the shift in musical direction has been greatly influenced by Funkadelic and Sly & the Family Stone. “I remember hearing a Funkadelic scream and being like, ‘Wow, that’s sexual and it’s scary.’ Not having a name for that, though; just having a feeling. That’s what made it great.”
- Australian fans will be the first to hear the new music live. Not including PHAROS, Gambino’s appearances at Falls Festival and Field Day are his next live performances. Lucky punters will be able to ring in the new year while feeling smug about being among the very first people on the planet to hear what will inevitably be an incredible album, live.
- It will be going live on all streaming platforms – no exclusives, mercifully.
- An invite-only “Return to PHAROS” event will take place next Tuesday in California. The event will see Gambino celebrate the album along with a Microsoft collaboration that seems to indicate a virtual reality component of the release.
Three days to go, folks.

Childish Gambino is dropped a new album in just two weeks, and he has released two incredible new tracks, both of which show an immense shift in musical style. Me And Your Mama came out last week, while Redbone was released just this morning, on Zane Lowe and Annie Mac’s radio shows respectively.
Gambino premiered this new music earlier in the year at his three-day PHAROS event in Joshua Tree, California. However, internet sleuths have remembered that footage of Childish Gambino performing a new song, which we now know as Me And Your Mama, was released last year at Bonnaroo Festival in June 2015. We even wrote about it.

Awaken, My Love! comes out on December 2, 2016 via Glassnote. Childish Gambino will be visiting Australia at the end of December to perform at Falls Festival and Field Day in Sydney, making attendees the first in the world to hear the new music live, with the only exception being those who attended PHAROS.
