Victorian State Government To Help Soundproof Live Venues

Last Friday, June 5th, the Labor Government of Victoria made an announcement that would make any gig-goer’s heart sing. They announced that the launch of the Live Music Attenuation Assistance Program, as well as pledging $250,000 to go towards soundproofing venues.

Treat yo’self, Victoria!

The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Jane Garrett made the announcement at Cherry Bar in Melbourne’s AC/DC Lane last Friday, with an accompanying press release titled Music To The Ears of Victoria’s Live Venues that reads, “Venue owners and operators can apply for financial assistance to reimburse expenses for works such as installation of acoustic insulation and glazing, sound absorbing materials and air-lock doors and windows.”

This news is fantastic, as the war between residential places and established venues continues, with mostly the venues losing out. Now venues can apply for grants, and be reimbursed for soundproofing that was completed or contracted between 4 September 2010 and 4 September 2014. Garrett said of the announcement, “Live music is part of our culture. We’re working hard to encourage it further, to promote emerging Victorian artists and draw more tourists from all over. The music scene is a significant contributor to our economy, and many Victorians are employed directly or indirectly in the industry.”

Like giving Popeye spinach, this news will only help the state’s music scene continue to flourish as it has done for so many years in what is a major win for the industry. Here’s hoping other states catch on soon and move to save our venues, rather than happily watch them close doors forever. Read the full press release here.
