I’m very excited to premiere a brand new video today from Cherokee Red, a psych-folk-indie band out of Wilkes-Barre and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If you’ve been following Howl & Echoes you’ll know I’m not exactly a folk fan, so it takes something pretty special to grab my attention – and Cherokee Red have it. They’ve crafted themselves a seamless blend of warm, melodic folk decorated with sparkling psychedelia, and the resulting atmosphere evokes both a kind of homecoming comfort, and ethereal, otherworldly wonder.
The video for The World Is My Oyster is a “day in the life” it follows the group through a myriad scenes of playing music, the shimmering city lights of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in Pennsylvania and Binghampton in New York, camp fires, feeding rabbits and even a few owls here and there.
The clip was directed by Chason Sordoni, known for his work in comedy troupe Bird Text. Perfectly complementing the breezy tune, he’s really captured the atmosphere of the (proudly DIY) band, evidently purveyors of a pretty damn fine existence.
Originally formed as a “collective” of artists, Cherokee Red’s first EP came out to critical acclaim in 2014. Since then, they’ve been steadily building themselves a strong reputation through subsequent EPs and dazzling live performances! I highly recommend checking out more from these guys, you can listen to them on Soundcloud and buy their music on Bandcamp.
If you’re in the US, you can check them out on their upcoming tour. If you’re here in Australia, sit tight – hopefully an international tour will be on the cards.
