A few weeks ago M.I.A shared one of the tracks from her fifth album AIM called Go Off, featuring Skrillex. Now it has been confirmed that she and former One Direction-er Zayn Malik have been working together on a song known as Freedun.
How did this all come together?
“We have the same publishers and they wanted me to demo some songs for Zayn. Before I started writing properly my own stuff [for AIM], I was thinking maybe I’ll write for other people instead. I really wanted to write a song for Zayn….We had a couple people in common. And that’s how it came about. I didn’t really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him,” she explained to Entertainment Weekly.
While discussing her visa issues over Twitter a few months ago, she described her new album as her “last”.

In this interview, the reality of this sad fact was once again brought up as she spoke about her wish to try something different.
“I just feel like I need to spend more periods of time somewhere. When you get into music and you get into a cycle of a record, how life goes, is very fast. You don’t get to just live things out and get involved with communities. I want to spend some time in Greece, make a documentary [there]. Something useful for a bit,” she said.
AIM will be released on September 9th.

When the news broke over the weekend about Zayn Malik’s severe struggles with anxiety that resulted in the cancellation of a concert in London, I couldn’t help but feel for him.
It wasn’t just because I understood his struggles with mental illness, but because of the fall out that I knew would come from it. I was certain that people would be saying that he was lying to get out of a commitment or using it as an excuse. That it was a cop out, because they can’t see the effects.
When Zayn posted the explanation below, I’m guessing he also had these thoughts in mind. Those final lines seemed to be calling out to those people in particular.

He says the anxiety has that “haunted [him] throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of [him]”. I know exactly what that feels like.
For those of you who have never experience severe anxiety before, let me explain why he had no choice but to cancel. It may also help you understand why some people choose to give up their battle, even though that’s never the right answer.
Think of something you have to do that puts you under pressure. At first, you feel fine. Your head is clear, your deposition is in a positive place and you’re ready to smash it out of the park.
As time goes on, your brain starts to talk. You start to think about the pressure of the task. Your head tells you all the things that could go wrong and everything that can happen to you afterwards. It makes you think that after one mistake (even one that could be tiny and insignificant), your life is over. Your thoughts tell you that you’re not good enough to get through it. Soon, you can no longer understand what your thoughts are telling you. They’re all yelling at once, creating a deafening amount of noise in your mind.
You start to get a headache and your body freezes up. You can’t move or speak. Your head is so full that it feels like it’s about to explode. The pain moves to your chest, where your heart is beating fast. It’s so hard to breathe that your eyes fill with tears as you try to find the air. You start to hyperventilate. Your hands shake. Your body aches from the stress. Your mind and heart are still racing; you need to find a release.
You feel like you’re drowning. It’s all too much to handle.
Sometimes, with a little help, it goes away as quickly as it came. Other times, however, it lasts for what feels like a lifetime. You end up defeated, having to lighten the load by stopping what you’re doing.
But that can sometimes makes you feel worse than the overwhelming feelings that gave you the attack in the first place.
My anxiety makes me feel bad. I feel guilty because I think my anxiety disappoints others. Examples include when I’m out with friends and I need to leave sooner than we’d like to, or when I’m trying to work and I know I’m not quick enough, or my writing is not up to the standard it should be.
I know people are disappointed with me. I’m constantly disappointed with myself.
By talking with my psychologist, I’ve learnt a lot about anxiety. She tells me that everyone has to have a “normal” amount of anxiety. It’s what gives us the rush that we need to get going and do the things that scare us. It’s suppose to help, not hinder, the journey to success. When it starts to do the latter of the two, it becomes a problem that needs to be managed.
I think Zayn’s anxiety is a symbol of his passion for music. It shows how much he cares about the standard of the performances he gives and doubts whether he can continue to give his fans what they want. So much that it can be overwhelming, to the point of inability. I understand that, and so do countless others who have dealt with mental illness in themselves and in those around them.
We need to understand that it can’t be helped or pushed away. He needs to take time out to learn to deal with his anxiety. Once he can maintain the demons in his mind, he can get back to doing what he loves; making music for all of you.

In a recent interview, Zayn Malik has opened up about his time in boy band One Direction as well as taking the opportunity to reflect on artists who have inspired him.
With the release of his debut solo album, Mind Of Mine, only days away, Zayn sat down with Complex to talk about his transition form boy band member to breakout star.
Although his time in the boy band was an undoubtedly incredible experience, the young artist appeared grateful for that chapter of his life now being behind him. In particular, he is looking forward to being able to express himself freely – “now I get to talk about what I’m passionate about- it’s nice to have the chance to speak”.
One thing he chose to spoke about, interestingly, was his love for hip-hop. Malik cited 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me as a strong influence on his artistic evolution.
”The songs are so real, and from a perspective of a place where somebody is not afraid to be completely 100 percent honest. He’s the first rapper to talk about the fact that his mom was a crack addict. For me, that’s courageous as fuck.”
“He took that risk and spoke about everything in detail openly and without any shame. For me to listen to that album as I grew up, it really helped me to understand that it’s OK to be honest with your art, because people appreciate that.”
He went on to talk about Kanye West, saying, “I believe that success follows authenticity. People see through fake shit. They don’t want to see that; they want a real person. That’s why Kanye is so successful. He’s speaking the truth, regardless of whomever he offends, he isn’t bothered. That’s admirable.”
Zayn Malik will drop his solo album Mind Of Mine, on March 25.

If you missed the news, Tyler The Creator asked Former One Direction member Zayn Malik to collaborate with him. Tyler tweeted with his instrumentals and Malik’s voice, they could “figure something out”.
HI @zaynmalik I HAVE BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENTALS AND YOU HAVE A VOICE LETS FIGURE THIS OUT MY GUY . EPIC ALBUM CUTS THO NO RADIO SINGLES
— Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) August 9, 2015
Apparently, Malik agrees. He responded, saying he is keen to “do some shit”.
@fucktyler sounds sick BRO let do some shit !

Malik broke thousands of tween hearts worldwide when he abruptly left the boy band to be a “normal 20 year old”.
You know, because normal 20 year olds spend all their time in professional recording studios.
His work with producer Naughty Boy was made public when a track of Malik singing with an acoustic guitar was posted online. This collaboration may be over after Malik called him “a fat joke”.
Malik’s solo career has caused friction between him and some of former his band mates, as well as the Directioner community. Twitter has been a storm of tweet exchanges, rants and trending hashtags ever since he left in March this year. As the resident bad boy of the group, he and Tyler might get along well.
Tyler has announced that his Australian tour has been cancelled, despite the fact that his request for a working visa not yet rejected. This was due to the work of a feminist group called Collective Shout, stating that his music encouraged violence against women.
ITS OFFICIAL, NO AUSTRALIA, ILL COME WHEN ITS NOT SO MUCH CRAZY STUFF GOING ON. DONT DO DRUGS AND EAT A GOLDEN GAY TIME FOR ME <3
— Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) August 10, 2015
What do you think of the upcoming collab? Or better still, do you think it will actually happen?
Stay tuned to find out.
