The ground is thawing and summer is finally coming. For Australian music industry, that only means one thing: festival lineups and summer tours are being announced by the bucketload. We’re especially excited to see a small but exciting list of hip-hop artists coming down under for festival appearances and headline tours, and to make life easier for you, we’ve placed them all in one big convenient list.

We’ll update this as the announcements keep rolling out. For now, here are our picks for a summer of hip-hop via festivals and live music.

Falls Festival

Our picks: Run The Jewels, D.R.A.M., Vince Staples

Run The Jewels haven’t visited Australia since Falls Festival 2014-2015, and though Vince Staples visited twice last year, he’s since released a whole new album, Big Fish TheoryD.R.A.M., meanwhile, cancelled his Groovin The Moo appearance earlier this year, so we’re hoping he makes his debut Australian appearance for New Years Eve.

Beyond The Valley

Our picks: ScHoolboy Q, Stormzy, Sampa The Great

One of Victoria’s favourite newer festivals has had a hip-hop-loving presence across each of its three years so far, and this year is no different. Both ScHoolboy Q and Stormzy just chewed up and spat out Splendour in the Grass, and will be visiting again in just a few months’ time. ScHoolboy’s last album, Blank Face, was one of our favourite records of 2016, while Stormzy claimed the grime throne with this year’s Gang Signs & Prayer. Joining these will be our favourite local artist Sampa The Great, who always delivers one hell of a show.

Dates

Dec 28 – Jan 1: Lardner Park, Vic

Meredith Music Festival

Noname

Our picks: Noname

The eclectic Meredith Music Festival lineup isn’t particularly hip-hop heavy, but it does include the incredibly talented, soulful artist Noname, who will be visiting Australia for the very first time. Originally emerging as Noname Gypsy, the Chicago singer was largely noted for her association with Chance the Rapper, namely for her guest verse on the Acid Rap track Lost.

Since then she’s well and truly made a name for herself, releasing one of last year’s best albums, Telefone, and establishing herself as a beacon of honey in a world

Laneway Festival

Screen Shot 2017-08-22 at 9.20.20 am

Our picks: Anderson Paak

The Laneway lineup hasn’t even been fully announced yet (we’ll update this when it is), but it’s already whet our whistles with the news that the amazing Anderson Paak will be on our shores once more in January and February 2018. The Malibu artist last toured for Listen Out 2016.

The Laneway lineup does traditionally feature a slew of great hip-hop acts, and we’re expecting a few more to join in – my guesses include Tyler, The Creator, if he’s actually allowed into the country this time, The Internet, Aminé (that’s just wishful thinking) and Frank Ocean (okay now I’m just fantasising, this guess has literally zero basis in fact).

Migos

The Culture kings themselves are making their way down under for the very first time, and it’s going to be huge. The Atlanta trio have made tidal waves over the past couple years, not only dominating the hip-hop world in their own right, but collaborating with the likes of Katy Perry and Calvin Harris, while Quavo has gone even further extending his brand on tracks with Bieber, Thugga and Travis Scott.

Sun 15 Oct: Hisense Arena, Melbourne
Tues 17 Oct: Metro City, Perth

6lack

Image: Woody Hugh/Tony Tran Photography

LVRN upcomer 6lack (pronounced “black” ) will be supporting Migos at their shows, but he’s also making his debut headline appearances, and well worth a mention on his own. His debut album Free 6lack was a dark, smooth display of things to come, spawning huge singles Ex Calling and PRBLMS. There’s something about 6lack that really sets him apart from many of his contemporaries, and we have high hopes for his headline sets.

Khalid

Image: Rap-Up

Crooning R&B upstart Khalid has already had a killer 2017, delivering one of the year’s smoothest debuts with the amazingly earwormy American Teen. Following sellout tours in the USA and Europe, he’s just announced his debut shows in Australia, and it looks like fans can’t get enough – he’s already upgraded and sold out almost every show, so get in quick if you’re planning to catch the magic in action.

The Weeknd

Image: Rap-Up

Abel Tesfaye himself is finally, finally bringing his mammoth tour down under for the very first time. The ludicrously successful Canadian singer, who tiptoes the line between pop and R&B with more Max Martin-produced finesse than a Cirque du Soleil performer, is coming in hot with a full round of arena shows this November.

Joining Tesfaye will be French Montana and Nav, whose recent album with Metro Boomin was one of the shittiest records of 2017 so far, but hey, maybe his live show will be more fun. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dates

Wed Nov 29: Spark Arena, Auckland
Sat Dec 2: Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney
Sun Dec 3: Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney

GZA

Image: Jeff Filman

Wu-Tang Clan’s brilliant GZA is returning to Australia once more for a solo tour, having last visited with (most of) the full Clan in 2016. His last solo tour was way back in 2012 (I was there and can personally guarantee this is not a show you’ll wanna miss), so this is set to be pretty damn exciting, especially given how small the venues are. It’s not often you get to see a living legend in such intimate settings.

Dates

Sat 11 Nov: The Studio, Auckland
Sun 12 Nov: San Fran, Wellington
Wed 15 Nov: Fowlers Live, Adelaide
Thurs 16 Nov: Woolly Mammoth, Brisbane
Fri 17 Nov: Manning Bar, Syd
Sat 18 Nov: Max Watt’s, Melbourne
Sat Nov 19: Rosemount Hotel, Perth

The Weeknd recently announced that the next leg of his Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 world tour would arrive in Australia. Now, the details, venues and dates have been revealed. Abel Tesfaye’s first ever visit to Australia and New Zealand will commence in Auckland on November 29, before visiting Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Both French Montana and Nav will be coming along for the ride, as support for all dates.

The tour is in support of his chart-topping fourth LP Starboy, which came out last November to critical acclaim. Previously, Tesfaye had found early online fame with anonymous mixtapes and a compilation album Trilogy, before releasing two incredible chart-topping albums, 2015’s Beauty Behind The Madness and Starboy. He’s enjoyed mega chart-topping hit after hit, including Often, The Hills, Can’t Feel My Face, Starboy, Earned It and I Feel It Coming, picking up two Grammys along the way as well.

Tickets go on sale on Friday June 30 at 3pm local time, with a 48-hour Telstra pre-sale from Monday, 26 at midday local time – more details here.

The Weeknd has just announced his first ever Australian tour dates. He’ll be touching down in December this year, visiting Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The dirty-R&B-meets-pop artist needs no introduction; one of the world’s biggest artists right now, Abel Tesfaye has worked with everyone from Daft Punk, Disclosure and Lana Del Rey to Beyonce, Future and Kanye West.

After first finding online fame with early mixtapes and his compilation album Trilogy, he went on to release two incredible chart-topping albums, 2015’s Beauty Behind The Madness and Starboy, released last year to critical acclaim. He’s enjoyed mega chart-topping hit after hit, including Often, The Hills, Can’t Feel My Face, Starboy, Earned It and I Feel It Coming, picking up two Grammys along the way as well.

The exact venues are currently unconfirmed, but the dates have officially appeared a tour poster shared by the artist himself. We’ll update you when we know more.

Hype can be a vicious beast, can’t it? It can improve something, or at least pertain to. But if something doesn’t live up to expectations it can come crashing way, way down. I certainly felt the hype surrounding The Weeknd‘s new album Starboy, released just a year after the stellar Beauty Behind The Madness. I was ready for this album to be mind-blowing and the album’s pre-release singles attested to that. From the first notes of the album – the Daft Punk collab Starboy – I was ready for a more neon Weeknd. Sure, it was poppy, but there was that delicious feeling of anticipation, the hope that this was scratching the surface.

To start at the top, Starboy is straight up pop. This offering is a complete departure from his previous work, which seems to have completed his transition to fully formed pop-star. Your thoughts on this transition will ultimately shape your thoughts on this album. That is to say, if you’re a huge fan of Trilogy and Beauty Behind The Madness, and you were hoping for more of the same, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.

Starboy is good. It’s different. It’s not great, but it’s not bad. There are stellar moments and standout songs that show a level of mastery that makes The Weeknd deserving of his pop throne, but there’s a lot of space in between these moments. Around half of the 18 tracks on the album are memorable, and the high points are spectacular. The opener and the closer (both Daft Punk collabs) are two of The Weeknd’s best songs ever. It’s just that there’s way too much chaff in between, and a couple of the tracks are plain terrible.

Light and boppy Starboy isn’t burdened by an in-your-face Daft Punk influence. The drums are delightfully hollow, which fits with the neon-club sound of the track, and it’s dark enough to feel like a Weeknd track. Party Monster is next, and it’s dope, it may be the best dark track on the album. It’s heavy enough to echo BBTM, but it’s different enough to feel pop. Listening to this song with a bass boost will blow your mind. Although the track is repetitve, it fits with the thematic loop of getting wasted and losing yourself in meaningless sex.

False Alarm is great. It’s the one track on the album that you will need to grow into, but when it clicks for you it’s worth it. I’m surprised this song comes so early in the album, with such a massive energy that forces you to dance. This song also has the best fucking music video. Repetitive, again, but the energy carries it forward into a really eerie outro…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW5oGRx9CLM

…which in turn carries into the shockingly smooth Reminder. This is the song that’s closest to Trilogy era Weeknd. The slower pace is a welcome change, and this is one of the more seductive tracks of the whole year – which is what we wanted from The Weeknd. Immediately we speed back up with Rockin’, one of the highest points on the album, and one of the best pop songs of the year, period. It’s got a speedy and driving beat, and a high-hat/snare combo that will see it garner plenty of club-time. It’s a beautiful dance track, you can’t miss this.

The beats keep coming with Secrets. The two-step combo of funk is devastating to anyone’s hopes of staying still. It’s one of Tesfaye’s smoother performances, and the combination of beachy vibes and 80s pads gives it a delightfully summery feel.

We slow down once more – this time it feels unwarranted though – with True Colors. Nothing massively memorable, but it bubbles away in a nice way. If you were in a club, this would be the song to get a drinks break to. Stargirl Interlude features Lana Del Rey, and the title is super literal: She is the real star here. She fucking kills it, lending her beautiful vocals to a small but memorable interlude. It’s ethereal and spacey, and great all the way.

Sidewalks brings a weirder sound the album. It has an inconsistent beat, and features the great king Kendrick Lamar. Obviously that makes it a lot more hip-hop than the rest of the album, and it picks up both tone and pace. much lighter sound. It feels like a single, and the whole thing is a little out of place on the album (especially after Lana’s haunting vocals). Would be a great track out of context, but in terms of the album as a whole… yeah not as much.

The pace continues to chop and change, screeching to a halt again with the underwhelming Six Feet Under, staying low with the synth-heavy Love To Lay, brightening up with the ’80s/Michael Jackson-inspired A Lonely Night, and dropping once more on Attention, a dull number with a heavily auto-tuned bridge. It’s clear that the album will be a commercial success, but the price he’s paid is omitting any kind of challenge or danger. Ho-hum.

Quality picks back up with Ordinary Life, while Nothing Without You continues in that mellow vein. All I Know brings an amazingly dope Future collaboration to the fore, a great track with a slow but fresh pace which orbits around the breakdown ahead of Future’s verse. Alhough lyrically sub-par, the rapper’s auto-tuned tones are a great contrast against Tesfaye’s vocals; all in all it’s a really nice change and one of the album’s best moments.

Final track I Feel It Coming’s place at the end of the album is both a blessing and a curse; it’s a phenomenal track to end on, but in saying that, it highlights how utterly mediocre so much of the midsection was. The first five tracks were great, and there were high points throughout (A Lonely Night in particular), but it doesn’t reach “greatness” until the very end.

The Weeknd knows how to deliver brilliant music, and he’s shown that on this album. But it falls short; it’s inconsistent, it flits about, it doesn’t push far enough. It’s safe. The production is beautiful and the transitions are seamless, but you can’t dive into a shallow pool.

The album is worth a spin or two, it’s certainly not ‘bad’. If nothing else, keep the standout tracks for your summer playlist. But in a year filled with an unbelievable amount of incredible music – incredible albums, on top of BBTM being so brilliant, it’s hard to not feel disappointed.

Image: Pretty Much Amazing

Following on from last year’s critical success beauty Behind The Madness, The Weeknd has now returned with new album Starboy. The record features the three previously released singles, two of which are Daft Punk collaborations showcasing a brighter, poppier electro-R&B sound, somewhat removed from the seductive R&B bedroom bangers previously championed by the artist, real name Abel Tesfaye.

The album consists of 18 tracks, including all-star collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey and Future as well as Daft Punk. Meanwhile, Cashmere Cat produced four of the other tracks.

The album release has coincided with a lengthy and revealing interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio, which delves into everything from working with K-Dot and Daft Punk to cutting his hair (which he has actually kept in a box).

Speaking about writing Starboy with Daft Punk, Tesfaye said, “I came into the session [in Paris] and Thomas and Guy-Man had already started a track, which was I Feel It Coming, which was just the music. It was one of the tracks they were playing for me and I was freestyle over it and trying to find a vibe with it. So, we were writing it. I was writing the lyrics to I feel It Coming and then probably finished it in about an hour. Went into the booth and started recording it. Guy-Man and Thomas were kind of directing me, they want it to sound as authentic as possible. As retro as possible. And while I’m recording, through the talkback I can here some sort of feedback, sort of drum loop every time Thomas is like ok next take. So I’m like what the fuck is that? What is that sound? So I walk in and its Guy-Man on his phone, on his laptop or something and it’s the drums of Starboy. [drum sounds] We’re like, what is that? He’s like it’s just something on my phone and I’m like put that shit on the fucking speakers, let me here that. And it’s just this crazy monstrous loop so I put I Feel It Coming to the side. I’m like I’m writing this. Literally wrote Starboy in 30 minutes.”

2016 has certainly been a big year for musical artists branching out with into the film realm; Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Frank Ocean’s Endless served as the major standouts, combining both of these art forms masterfully. Now looking to join them is fellow musical heavyweight and Canada’s R&B prince The Weeknd, recently announcing what he is calling a “visual piece”.

Titled Mania, The Weeknd released an 18 second teaser trailer onto his Twitter earlier today, and from what we can assume, it’s a film which exists in the same space as the Starboy music video, with both featuring that memorable panther and being directed by Grant Singer.

Information is still very scarce, and there is no set release date (while we assume it drops on the album release) or outline for what this visual piece will actually entail. While we hope it somehow ties into his other incredible clip for False Alarm, it would be equally brilliant if this did in fact turn out to be a visual accompaniment for the album slated for release this Friday.

In other news, as if that couldn’t get any better for Australian fans of The Weeknd, the second round of his pop-up shops have chosen to base one of their stores in Melbourne. Selling a range of merchandise, from denim jackets and bombers to tees and caps, it’s all in celebration of the release of his Starboy album. Check out the poster below and visit his shop here for more information.

Kingswood – Creepin

The first single off their forthcoming sophomore album, Creepin is an uplifting yet melancholic anthem. Featuring their signature gritty guitar riffs, slapping drumbeats, and captivating vocals, this is a bold return from the boys. The video itself is also weirdly enchanting, featuring a range of ballet dancers who are accompanied by a freakishly face-painted ‘creep’.

Torii Wolf – Body

Torii Wolf has released a seductive and meditative banger titled Body, produced by araabMUSIK. With her smooth and sultry vocals gliding through the track, the video builds upon these sentiments, but showcases the emptiness and longing one has for a past lover.

Danny Brown – Pneumonia

Detroit’s Danny Brown has released yet another visual accompaniment from his fourth studio album Atrocity Exhibition. This time with a haunting clip for Pneumonia, the kind of horrifying experimental track sees Danny tied up in chains and flailed through the air. While we don’t entirely get what’s going on, it definitely does a good job of keeping your eyes glued to the screen.

Pusha T – H.G.T.V.

After teasing the tune just days ago, King Push has finally released the new track H.G.T.V alongside it’s new video. Shot entirely in portrait orientation (maybe grab your phone), the simplistic, sub bass centred beat sees Pusha T flexing his vocal skills to the max. Just goes to show, with over 20 years in the game, Pusha has still got it.

Kid Cudi – Frequency

Following the previously released All In, Cudi has returned with a new video for his upcoming project. An enchanting mix of auto-tune laced choruses and in-depth rap verses, catchy is an understatement. Frequency is actually directed by Cudi himself and follows him as he traverses through a mysterious and eerie jungle like setting.

Glass Animals – Season 2 Episode 3

Dropping the visual accompaniment to one of their recent album’s favourites, the video game inspired single has now gotten a video game inspired clip! Centring around a disinterested, couch-bound girl, she is soon pulled into a psychedelic video game world at the flip of a button. It’s an incredible interpretation of the video game sounds used within the tune, and if that couldn’t get any better, this game will soon be playable by fans!

The Weeknd – False Alarm

For his second music video of the album, The Weeknd has certainly gone all out. Matching the fast paced and intense nature that the single presented, the clip follows a group of bank robbers as they make their heist and getaway. It’s an incredibly violent and cinematic film for something as simple as a music video, but the result is something utterly unique and head turning in every way.

The Lumineers – Cleopatra

Is there anything more pure than a classic On Tour style music video? Probably not. There’s just something about them that’s both exciting and nostalgic and Denver outfit The Lumineers have just unveiled their version. Filled with behind the scenes footage from stadiums through through the front window of a van en-route to a show, to shots of fans and crowds, Cleopatra’s got a bit of everything and gives a glimpse into the day to day touring life of a band during the a whirlwind that is a World Tour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClvG58Igo9o

Hayley Kiyoko – One Bad Night

Content Warning: transmisogynistic violence
Disney-actor turned singer Hayley Kyioko has never shied away from representation of people and experiences. Her new video for the synthy and guitar driven pop-centric One Bad Night is no exception. The clip sees Donald (played by Birth of a Nation actor Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Amber (played by trans YouTube activist Erin Armstrong) each go through a particularly rough night. After stealing a car from his valet parking job, Donald witnesses an attack on Amber and intervenes, the two strangers ending up their night together in a diner. Like her previous videos, One Bad Night is directed by Kyioko and places her LGBT+ activism at the forefront of her art.

Archivist – Everything is Wanted

Ahead of the release of their upcoming EP Memo, London electro-indie act Archivist have unveiled the video for their song Everything is Wanted. Cutting between colour and black and white, the jumpy nature of the clip fits perfectly with the song as frontman Ed Begley journeys through city and forest in an almost escapist nature. Particularly good are the slow shots of a gently wild sea, slowing things down for contemplation before urgently restarting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u15NmuWnBtE&feature=youtu.be

Seekae – Turbine Blue

If the location for the latest video from Sydney trio Seekae seems super familiar, that’s probably because you’ve watched Grease and/orTerminator 2 a few too many times. Directed by Kris Moyes, the video was the last to be shot at the iconic location before it was demolished and follows seven people with very different dancing styles. It’s a somewhat unexpected approach a fresh vibe and lots of super pleasing, crisp blue tones.

Good God Almighty that accelerated quickly.

After a bombshell album announcement earlier today and the reveal of its new artwork (featuring a shockingly un-dreaded Abel Tesfaye), The Weeknd has ended speculation about what his mysterious studio link-up with French electronic deities Daft Punk was all about and just dropped the debut single from Starboy featuring the duo. The song, the title track from the record, opens with very Daft Punk production, a slick, almost robotic driving beat that pulses along with rumbling synths, a simple piano riff and The Weeknd’s silky smooth falsetto wafting over the top of it all. You can listen below:

That chorus, with the very Daft Punk-esque vocoder and The Weeknd’s fiery lyrics (“look what you’ve done/I’m a motherfuckin’ starboy”) is like a sonic fish hook, not even two listens in and I’m already singing it in my head. If you listen to the song on Apple Music you also get some clues about Starboy the album. Though unplayable yet, Apple Music lists a whopping 18 tracks in total, though none are titled but for the third (False Alarm). It also lists an expected release date of November 25th, which did seem to be about five minutes away before today and now feels like an eternity.

We can’t wait to hear more from Starboy in the meantime.

The Weeknd has announced his follow up to last year’s stellar Beauty Behind The Madness, sharing the first details about his new album, entitled Starboy.

Here’s the cover art, which he shared via Twitter:

https://twitter.com/theweeknd/status/778625538789257216

Although we don’t have many more solid details on the new release, The Weeknd has been dishing out clues over the past few months. Real name Abel Tesfaye, the Canadian star recently shared some information about the direction and influences of his new album. Speaking to V Man, he said, “There are new inspirations on this album. The production feels aggressive but still sexy. The Smiths, Bad Brains, Talking Heads, Prince, and DeBarge play roles. We wrote it all in Los Angeles. I think it’ll be the best-sounding album I’ve ever done. It’s hard to label the sound because, when I first came out, nobody would label it R&B. I just want to keep pushing the envelope without it feeling forced.”

He’s also spoken about how his new record has been created with the production team he worked with when he first emerged back in 2011 with the brooding Take Care, and that the influence of producer and “mentor” Doc McKinney will be felt throughout.

Tesfaye has been working hard on his new album, having cancelled many of his live appearances throughout 2016 – including a support slot on Rihanna‘s world tour –  to spend time in the studio. ““Creatively, some magic is happening right now, and I don’t want to lose it,” he told Vogue back in May. “It could be an album or it could be something else, but whatever it is, music is being made.”

No more information as yet about new singles or release dates for the sultry musical enigma, but we’ll keep you posted when more is available.

The cover image, by the way, was captured by Nabil, one of the most important, respected photographers and videographers in the music industry. Nabil started out by shooting Kanye’s early press shots, and has later gone on to shoot everyone from Frank Ocean to Bon Iver. He’s also directed a myriad incredibly high profile video clips, for artists including Kanye, Frank Ocean, Foals, Vince Staples, Mos Def, James Blake and FKA Twigs.

It’s no secret that The Weeknd has been hard a work producing a new album.

The latest event in a long lead-up to what could be one of the artist’s biggest releases to date, the Canadian singer has deleted all of his previous Instagram posts. This included the singer’s most recent post which included the caption “This my last post before the new era.”

His unconventional Instagram manner coincides with a cryptic Tweet from September 15:

https://twitter.com/theweeknd/status/771787040455208960

While Abel could simply be excited for a change in season, it could also hint that something big is on its way. Given that Autumn kicks off on September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere, the cool transition may coincide with a surprise release.

While what exactly the release will entail remains unknown, the artist has been teasing a steady stream of details on an unnamed album being recorded at Hollywood’s Conway Studios. In a lengthy interview with  VMAN Abel revealed that the album is “the best-sounding” LP he’s ever made. Further details include that the LP will draw inspiration from Talking Heads, The Smiths, Bad BrainsPrince, and DeBarge. It is also rumoured that the artist has cut a new track in collaboration with legendary French duo Daft Punk.

Any new album would follow-up on The Weeknd’s sophomore record Beauty Behind The Madness. Given that the LP only dropped in August 2015, more sceptical fans could be forgiven for thinking that it could be a little while before a full-length studio album will emerge. But at the very least it seems almost certain there’s going to be some sonic snippets of things to come.
