Cub Sport – Only Friend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSUNXCKCTX4&inf_contact_key=06f54529afe2e1ded3c1fd5bbbe11d7d5dbfa925ab053aab7eccdc69d5d4b6b8

Having previously scooped up Australian Video of the Year honours from Channel V, Brisbane band Cub Sport know exactly what goes into the making of a good music video. This one accompanies their brand new single Only Friend, a prelude to their forthcoming album This Is Our Vice.

Directed by Joe Agius, from one of our other favourite Brisbane bands The Creases, the video delves into the seldom-touched themes of anxiety and depression. The song features a haunting synthy build up to a gorgeous chorus, the music video featuring the four members of the band stuck in the middle of a party full of revellers, highlighting the awful feeling of isolation even in the most celebratory of circumstances that is such a largely overlooked aspect of anxiety and depression.

Shot beautifully lo-fi, with all the fuzz of a well-worn VHS, and exploiting some heavy neon pinks and blues, the clip is visually fantastic (and features plenty of cameos from members of The Creases too). A nifty taste of their new album, which drops March the 4th next year.

Big White – Dinosaur City

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0JaLlNSj9Y

Sticking with the lo-fi vibes for this one is the latest single from Big White: Dinosaur City. The track itself sounds like Robert Smith fronting an Australian new wave band from the 80s (a sound as outrageously good as you’d imagine) and the chorus will have you in a death grip.

The video makes the above one by Cub Sport look as thought it was 1080p, it’s a VHS bleed and so everything is just melting on the screen nice and warmly. There may be no velociraptors of any description but the video for Dinosaur City does feature the band running through what looks like a cracker of a night out on the town with swings in the park and a whole lot of alleyway dancing. It’s a feelgood clip for the summer and the track is an absolute standout.

Also in the spirit of the 80s, Dinosaur City is being released as part of a limited edition 7″ paired with a B-side of the Japanese version of their previous single You Know I Love You. You know we love you too Big White.

Moses Gunn Collective – Hole In The Wall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6-ahJvHIbs

Having released their debut LP Mercy Mountain earlier in 2015, psychedelic Brisbane legends Moses Gunn Collective have been riding a wave of roundly-deserved critical acclaim to back up the tsunami of hype that preceded that record. They’ve now released their third single from the album, Hole In The Wall and a video to go along with it.

It’s as summery a track as you’re going to get, the mellowed out and breezy psych rock vibes taking your ears for a blissful ride. The clip was filmed on a sunny afternoon in a field just perfect for rolling around in. It features frontman Aidan Moore in all white everything, having an absolute whale of a time playing guitar in a paddock as the sun goes down and copping a glitter shower to the face amongst other activities. It’s pure bliss on the eyes and the ears.

Editors – Ocean Of Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqlY2fxaFrw

The Staffordshire rock band came back with an absolute bang in 2015 with the release of their long-awaited fifth studio album In Dream. The latest single from that album, which stormed all the way to the top five of the UK charts, is Ocean Of Night. One of  three tracks on the album to feature the vocal assistance of Rachel Goswell, the sparkly little piano melody will hook you from the beginning, the song burning slowly around the ghostly chamber vocals of frontman Tom Smith before an absolutely mammoth chorus.

The video, shot in a warm black and white, is comprised of footage both backstage and on from a sold out show the band threw on at Dublin Olympia. Stunningly shot, it’s as uplifting as the track itself and the reactions of the crowd are a ringing endorsement of Editors’ continued position at the forefront of modern rock.

CHVRCHES – Empty Threat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNHxwSp-6Og

September saw the release of Scottish synth pop trio CHVRCHES sophomore LP Every Open Eye, a record that built to skyscraper heights off of an already rock solid debut and one that has won over an enormous swathe of fans both old and new. The latest single and video to be released from that effort is Empty Threat.

Driving at 100 miles an hour, elating the listener to brand new heights and generally just being an absolute stomper of a dance anthem, the video for Empty Threat features firepower frontwoman Lauren Mayberry on a punked out road trip with a water park as the end destination, the safety pins and endless black juxtaposed nicely with the summer sun.

Catch CHVRCHES in Australia when they touch down here to headline Laneway and play some (already very sold out) sideshows.

Pusha T – Untouchable

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPI_6MX74j4

President Pusha is in the house. The newly coronated overlord of GOOD Music recently announced a double drop of albums to cap off 2015 with Darkest Before Dawn and then again in mid-2016 with the long, looong-anticipated King Push. His latest single Untouchable is notable for its sampling of a lesser known verse from The Notorious B.I.G. (from the 1995 cut by Pudgee Tha Phat Bastard Think Big).

The lyrics over the minimalistic backbeat are just stupendous, Pusha calling out professional piece of shit Donald Trump in deliciously profane fashion as well as comparing himself to Tony Montana and U2 (with The Edge) in the same breath. But mainly, according to Untouchable, Pusha T is here to chew gum and sell drugs, and he’s all out of gum.

The video features Pusha riding around some tough looking streets in the night, living fearlessly because he’s King Push, President of Everything and he does exactly what he wants at all times. It’s a cracker of a clip and we’re grateful to our ruler for his generous spacing between future albums.

Seth Sentry – Fake Champagne

Seth Sentry has had one hell of a year. After releasing Strange New Pasthe went on an incredible fifty date tour of Australia, toured across Europe, and just last night he went home with the ARIA Award for Best Urban Album.

He’s slated to perform at Falls Festival across the new year, but first comes the video for Fake Champagne, created using footage compiled throughout this year’s relentless tour schedule. The really nicely shot clips blends live gigs with highway stops, snowy landscapes, early morning flights and all sorts of ridiculous antics.

Lyrically, this was one of my favourite tracks on the album. A bitter judgement of trying to live a reflective and self-aware life while being surrounded by fake friends and what we assume to be both literal and figurative “fake champagne”. We hear that.

We’ve got a slightly extended playlist this week, featuring a completely diverse range of artists, from psych, to electro, to indie-folk, to experimental hip hop and everything in between. Ladies and gentlemen, sit back, relax, and enjoy the best new music of the week.

Moses Gunn Collective – Hole in the Wall

The Brisbane psych-rockers return with a hazy new single, as they continue on their journey to the top of the pile of Australian psychedelia. There’s a beautiful depth – lyrically and tonally – that’s usually kinda hard to see through the washed-out fuzz. It’s glittery and fun, and another delightful taste from their recently-released album Mercy Mountain

Summer Flake – The Sun Won’t Shine

With a sound nestled comfortably in between Courtney Barnett and Darts, this folky, distinctly Australiana track isn’t my usual fare, but I love it anyhow. I love the organic feel, and the kind of subtle expansiveness. The rhythm and that lo-fi folk melody make for simple, easy listening, and the extra vocals and the heavier guitars really capture my attention, drawing me in to a track that’s catchy and surprisingly dense.

Young Franco – Don’t  Want Me ft. Blair De Milo

Young Franco has come a long way in the past couple years – and he’s moving up, up and into orbit. This is a really cool house track, perfect for cocktail hour, but probably more perfect for a late night boogie. The vocals are punchy and smooth, a great complement to the staccatoed synths and wompy bass. YF is heading out on tour, so get those dancin’ shoes on. Details here.

The Cactus Channel – Sleeping Alone ft. Chet Faker

My favourite for the week, hands down. The Cactus Channel have been on my radar for a little while, paving their way with gorgeous brass-infused blues/funk. No doubt this will draw well-deserved attention to them, considering that it features guest vocals from the award-winning beard that is Chet Faker. The slinky, bluesy track fits a late-night-smoky-dive-bar feel. Faker’s voice is fucking awesome on this one, too. It’s smooth, emotive, and so much more relaxed than what we’re usually privy to. Those falsetto phrases with the trumpets behind him? Wow.

The Cactus Channel – Kill The Doubt ft. Chet Faker

Judging by the above review, I think it’s obvious as to why I’m devoting 20% of this playlist to this brilliant joint effort. The second collaborative track between The Cactus Channel and Chet Faker, this one is swifter and full of motion, but somehow darker and denser than Sleeping Alone. I can only hope that these tracks spawn something more – this is one hell of a sound. Not only is it seductively cool, but there’s nothing else quite like it around right now.

SG Lewis – Shivers (HONNE remix)

Continuing in a similar vein comes this soulful electro-R&B SG Lewis remix, courtesy of the enigmatic HONNE. It’s an interesting blend – raw, emotional vocal crooning, atop bulging, smoke-machine synths and muffled vocals. Once the beat starts to form, the atmosphere brightens. I’m not usually one for this kind of house blend, but I couldn’t help but have a little chair-dance to the rhythm and gorgeous melodies throughout.

Roots Manuva – Don’t Breathe Out

Roots Manuva has returned – and this time he means business. Don’t Breathe Out is genuinely one of the best tracks we’ve ever heard from the UK MC (it’s no Witness The Fitness, sure, but it’s close). Understated, with a smooth, comfortable flow and no need to rely on whoops, sirens and huge beats, it’s a clear sign that his musical journey is far from over.

Med, Blu, Madlib – Knock Knock ft. MF DOOM

I don’t really know if I need to even write much about this track. I mean, it’s a track that’s not only filled with super weird and awesome samples, but it has both Madlib and DOOM on it. Like….. enough said.

Lemon – Your Friends (interlude)

This is a deep, dark and entirely sexy track from Toronto artist Lemon. The beat. It’s slow and it’s deep, leaving the perfect amount of space between each layer – you can really feel enveloped, you can really focus on every single layer at once, from the vocals to the bass and everything in between. We hear A LOT of female-fronted electro tracks like this, but this one immediately, obviously, stands out from the pack.

CVIRO & GXNXVS – Sober (Jerome Price Remix) (Radio Edit)

I heard the original of this track a couple months ago, and it didn’t really grab me. But there’s something about Jerome Price’s remix that’s crawled under my skin – whether it’s that bouncy beat or those funked up vocals, the UK producer has taken the track, originally by Aussies CVIRO and GXNXVS (before you ask I have no fucking clue how to pronounce either of them) and put me in the mood for the weekend.

GUM – Anesthetized Lesson

GUM is the latest project from Perth’s Jay Watson (Tame Impala/POND). The instrumental layers are super cool – funky, crunchy synths with a catchy rhythm, supported by a simple beat and a myriad expectedly pscyhedelic space sounds and synth trickles. Admittedly I’m not huge on the faint falsetto vocals, but the rhythm makes up for it. Keep an eye out for Watson’s new album Glamorous Damage, out Nov 13.

Brisbane darlings Moses Gunn Collective have become a staple in the local, and now national, scene for all the right reasons – electrifying live performances, incredibly catchy and accomplished singles and now the album, Mercy Mountain, to back it all up. If there was any doubt that even bigger things are on the horizon for this five piece, their hometown album launch last weekend firmly quashed it.

Supported by Donny Love and Black Zeros, the bill was about as solid as it gets last Friday with a healthy number showing for both supports. However, the crowd almost instantly swelled as the headliners took to the stage, with the entire room suddenly packed out to the point where those at the front (me) were faced with a sea of faces trapping them there. Thankfully, the show smashed any and all expectations so being trapped wasn’t a problem at all.

Effortlessly moving through their setlist, Moses Gunn Collective showed off their debut album in all it’s jangly, psychedelic, blissed out glory to adoring fans. Prompting more than a few singalongs, their infectious back catalogue meant they had the crowd in the palm of their hand and they didn’t let go once. Live favourites like Colour Television and Ghost Life, with their hard hitting drums and in-your-face guitars, saw the crowd get even looser than they already were, whilst Mercy Mountain and Midnight Parlour saw the band briefly touch on the break pedal for a split second, before launching into the pure euphoria of both tracks. Of course, lead singles and the tracks that were responsible for the band ticking boxes such at playing Falls Festival earlier this year, MaryShalala, Back Into The Womb and Hot Mess, were rapturously received, and even prompted a stage invasion of epic proportions in their final track.

Incredibly tight, the band moved through their set as a whole unit, seamlessly getting through their considerable time slot with ease and an air of nonchalance. Openly grateful for the huge turnout, the band gave just as much love back to the crowd as was being poured out onto them, all the while showing why they are absolutely ones to keep an eye on. They’ll be playing at BIGSOUND next week and will undoubtedly have even more success coming their way in the near future. I’m just grateful I have been able to catch them in such intimate settings over the past few months, it won’t be long at all until they outgrow your standard venues and are packing out huge concert halls. Only up from here, guys!

Words by Raymond Williams

I knew this album was going to be good, but I didn’t anticipate that we were going to receive what could possibly be one of the best albums in Brisbane and even Australian history. Big call I know, but sometimes they need to be made and it’s not a call I make lightly. Moses Gunn Collective‘s debut album Mercy Mountain is a classic album, and I think what we’re about to see here is the next Brisbane band to go big. They’ve got all of the right factors in place with a good team behind them, but most importantly, they’ve got an outstanding piece of work to present.

Thirteen tracks, each offering something different and the best part is none of it is filler. There is something to get pulled into on each track. It’s all consuming, and takes you to where you want to go – even if you didn’t know where that was. It’s pop music like you want it, but it’s so much more than that. There are tastes of psych, funk, blues, prog rock, country and more throughout, intertwined into something entirely of their own creation. Add to that the vast amount of influences like Prince, The Doors, T-Rex, even more recently Tame Impala, but all melded in with Moses Gunn’s signature sound palette and flair, and you can kind of get a grasp of just what is going on in Mercy Mountain.

Stellar examples like Hole in the Wall, a song which highlights the group’s understanding of melody, show the untapped potential of the band. Meticulously but effortlessly creating hooks and with attention to detail, Moses Gunn show off how natural songwriting is to them, and they show it off so well. Meanwhile, tracks like New Romantic Novocaine where the band gets electronic and sound pretty fucking massive when paired with a hypnotic chorus, shows off the band’s somewhat surprising knack for production. Other stand outs such as the electrifying Colour Television and the infectious Desdamona, to the sprawling Neighbourhood highlight even more versatility in the band’s sound, and once again their ease and prowess when it comes to songwriting.

Mercy Mountain is thoroughly enjoyable, and is really all you could ever ask for from an album experience. Seriously, what a treat. Holy fuck. Thank you Moses Gunn Collective. You can buy it here, and I strongly urge you to do so. The band are also on tour later this month, you can check those dates below!

4.5/5

11707694_10152867905931793_5534041630612272556_o

Brisbane psych-rock five piece Moses Gunn Collective have been experiencing their biggest year yet this year. With the addition of a fifth member (and resident lady of the group), they’ve played at Falls Festival, jumped on tour with The Jungle Giants, dropped one of the most bizarre videos we’ve seen this year and are just about ready to release their debut album. They’ve also been selected to perform at this year’s BIGSOUND, and are now set to embark upon a national tour of their own this month as well.

Moses Gunn Collective dropped their latest single Hot Mess yesterday, which sees the band shaking off any inhibitions to deliver this self described “straight up love ballad.” The band said of the track, “We’ve all loved a hot mess, or maybe even been a hot mess ourselves. Either way it’s this acceptance of the mess – and devotion to it – that pulls hardest on our heart strings.” It’s contagious with it’s ooh-oohs and aah-aahs, it’s nostalgic with it’s vocals and it’s so much fun with it’s borderline euphoric chorus. In a way, it’s a celebration of the hot messes, and that is something we can all probably relate to!

In between all of the pre-album release excitement, we nabbed some time with the band to ask them all about their favourite tunes. From cooking, to singing in the shower, to even sweet love makin’, the answers are a big mix of everything but from just one listen to any Moses Gunn song, that hardly comes as a surprise. A band built on a multitude of influences and inspirations, they’re definitely ones to keep your eye out for.

My favourite track to wake up to is…Invisible/Visible by Taylor McFerrin ft. Bobby McFerrin & Cesar Carmargo Mariano
Beautiful and sunshine-y. Incredibly soothing song to open your eyes to in the morning.

The best track for cooking is…Goin’ Back by Devendra Banhart
I’d recommend that whole album for cooking. You’ll be sure to whip up something wholesome and delicious.

The best track for spring cleaning is…On The Regular by Shamir
Listen to this on repeat and I guarantee you will clean your entire house in under an hour.

The ultimate road trip track is…Faded In The Morning by Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Oh man, this whole album is filled with road trip anthems.

My favourite love song is…Can’t Do Without You by Caribou
This song always makes me think about all the important people I love in my life. We couldn’t do it without ya’ll.

The best track for sweet love makin’ is…Send It On by D’Angelo
Some good ol’ D’angelo of course

The track that always gets the party started is…Drank & Drugs by Lil Kleine & Ronnie Flex
This is self-explanatory right?

The best track to wind down a crowd is…Cherry Blossom Girl by Air
Everyone can slow dance with their lovers or solo groove in their own brain but be sure everyone will be floatin’

My favourite drunken karaoke track is…Millionaire by Kelis
Who doesn’t miraculously know all the lyrics to this song when intoxicated?

My favourite song to sing in the shower is…Where’s Your Head At by Basement Jaxx
Currently it’s this. So many parts to sing.. not enough mouths..

A song that always makes me cry is…All I Need by Radiohead
It’s the most beautiful kind of cry though. It could be happy or sad.

I love going to sleep listening to…Iota by Angel Olsen
Her voice makes me feel warm and safe

I can’t stop dancing when I hear…Why by Les Sins
A new wave disco tune for everyone that likes to bounce

Aquilo – Calling Me

With an EP out this week, atmospheric pop duo Aquilo have released their video for their latest single of the same name – Calling Me. It’s a stirring song with an appropriately heart-warming video. Channelling a boy who is harassed for his love of ballet, he gets back at the bullies by dancing in front of them. Interesting tactic – not sure how it would fare in real life – but it’s a brilliant video with a great aesthetic and some fantastic shots.

Husky – Drunk

Before heading off to Europe with a new album coming out, Husky has dropped their new video, which unsurprisingly is about alcohol. Quite simply, it’s a pretty wacky video, with wine, grapes and plates flying all over the place thanks to some heavy CGI – and even ends with a table turning into a waterfall. Possibly needs to be seen to be believed. Plus it’s a brilliant little indie tune as well.

Moses Gunn Collective – Back Into the Womb

I wonder whether Moses Gunn Collective came up with the concept for Back Into the Womb just so they could walk through an enormous fabric vagina? In any case, once they do enter it’s quite the party – with a mountain of glitter, streamers and even aluminium foil for their guitars. It fits the psychedelic song well, and unfortunately you’re guaranteed to have the line ‘back into the womb’ stuck in your head all day, and to be honest I’m not sure how I feel about that. It’s the lead single for their upcoming album Mercy Mountain.

Urban Cone – Come Back to Me

Urban Cone is back with an infectious single featuring fellow Swede Tove Lo. The video clip will make you physically yearn for summer again, with the boys heading around some spectacular beaches and towns armed with a selfie stick. While it does horrifyingly somewhat remind me of a certain One Direction song on the beach, it gets away with it with some stunning visuals.

Gengahr – Heroine

With a debut album set for release, Gengahr have released a curious little video for their latest single. Following a young man running to meet his ‘heroine’, it shows all of the camera shy band members for the first time together in a video. Channelling Sleeping Beauty, he runs to meet her unconscious body to kiss her – but not in a creepy way.

DMA’s – Laced

It’s been a very long time coming, but roughly a year after releasing the single Laced, the DMA’s finally have made an accompanying video. It’s worth the wait though. It’s an explosion of colourful fun featuring dinosaurs, eyeballs and a lot more wacky stuff going on. With the amount of seemingly unrelated symbols, I feel like I should analyse it for high school English. Even if you don’t like the video, its an excuse to listen to a killer song.

Brisbane psych rockers Moses Gunn Collective have been a favourite of mine for quite some time now (if you have had a chance to see them live, you’d know why), so it’s very exciting indeed to hear brand spankin’ new music from the fivesome!

After the success of their EP, Morning Shakes, released late last year, it was only a matter of time before more new tracks began to emerge from Moses Gunn. Back Into The Womb is a song that has featured heavily in their live shows, and now finally is being released as a single. The band said of the track, “Life is a one way ticket with no returns. We were all blind, deaf and dumb in the beginning, but also safe. The urge to return to this simple existence lingers, whether we know it or not. We’re always thinking about this weird shit.” Weird shit is right, but when it’s put into a context such as this song, it doesn’t sound too weird at all. The falsetto harmonies, the groove, frontman Aidan Moore‘s Jagger-esque lead vocals – Back Into The Womb is hopefully indicative of what is still to come from the band, and it really is about time it received some attention!

Taken from the forthcoming album, Mercy Mountain, the band retreated to the hills recently (literally) to record the LP. After playing a few free shows around Brisbane since then, it seems they are well and truly ready to bring their new sounds on the road, with the first few shows supporting The Jungle Giants on their national tour. Whilst I’m much more of a fan of the psych-pop tunes of Moses Gunn than The Jungle Giants, and wholeheartedly believe the former will one day very soon be performing on their own headline national tour, this will be a great chance indeed to hear some of the new material first hand. It will, as always, be a hell of a show!

In the lead up to Born To Run – A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen being held this weekend at Brisbane’s The Triffid, we asked Moses Gunn Collective, Sahara Beck, Good Oak, Halfway and Love Hate Rebellion what their favourite songs were by The Boss! Ranging from big hits, to the overlooked phases of Springsteen’s back catalogue, their choices are diverse as ever and have us extremely excited to see what they’ll be performing this weekend!

Remember, we are giving away a double pass to one lucky person!

MOSES GUNN COLLECTIVE
State Trooper
Bruce in all his double denim, bad boy, generally not giving a f**k glory. A smouldering salute to insane outlaws everywhere.

Streets of Philadelphia
A beautiful ramble that feels like it’s just wafted out of a heavenly gutter somewhere in deep America. You’re down ‘n out but it’s all good, Brucey is there with you.

SAHARA BECK
Radio Nowhere
I love this track. It’s passionate and driving and like he is searching for some soul in the crap that gets played on the radio.

Hungry Heart
I love the sing along in this – the cheesy key change the oooohhhhhs and ahhhhhhs – it’s perfect.

GOOD OAK
Atlantic City
This has to be one of the all time great songs, it’s my favourite Bruce song. I love the way they recorded the Nebraska album and it suits this song perfectly.

Ain’t Got You
This is such a fantastic performance from Bruce. It sounds like it’s out of the 50’s with limited instrumentation and a vocal that only Bruce could deliver.

HALFWAY
Tougher Than The Rest
From the often overlooked late 80’s record tunnel of love, his first officially without the e street band. Just a beautifully tempoed love song with a hint of desperation, and a typically great Springsteen bridge.

Hungry Heart
The first single from The River. A Phil Spectorish pop song with the e-street band in full, spectacular flight. He actually wrote this for The Ramones but decided in the end to hang onto it himself.

LOVE HATE REBELLION
I’m On Fire
From the moment the picking and rimshot fade in, you know you’re onto something a little sweet and sad. Yet at the same time it’s a surprisingly sexy song. More than hinting at many edges of human desire, the song also represents the keyboard sound that so defined the era. Hearing this song, you know you’re not only hearing The Boss, you’re hearing the Eighties.

Dancing In The Dark
It’s a Springsteen classic! Put this on at a party and people get moving even in 2015. You can’t start a fire without a spark and you can’t listen to Springsteen without Dancing in the Dark. Like many of his songs, it captures that get up and go working spirit that’s so often underpinned by longing. And again, there’s a tangible romance to it, which always makes music better.

In our last instalment of Flashback Friday, we paid tribute to Bruce Springsteen‘s Born to Run, and it seems we aren’t the only ones with what I like to call “Boss Fever”. That’s right, Brisbane venue The Triffid’s temperature has reached a critical level, so they’re putting on a special night to pay tribute to the living legend that is The Boss.

The 20 time Grammy winner will be honoured on April 11 at one of Brisbane’s newest and most exciting venues, with the likes of Moses Gunn CollectiveGood OakLove Hate RebellionHalfway and Sahara Beck stepping up to perform hits from Springsteen’s extensive back catalogue. Each act has been successful in their own right, from Moses Gunn Collective nabbing the opening slot for the Byron Bay Fall Festival to Sahara Beck‘s final round nomination for Most Popular Female in the Queensland Music Awards.

Pull out your finest double denim outfit and jump on tickets now, this one is sure to be a night to remember!

We’re so excited that we’re giving away a double pass, so that you can be there to celebrate The Boss with us. It’s super easy to enter:

Words by Braydon Ritson

2014 was a breakthrough year for a number of Australian artists, with the likes of The Preatures, DMA’s, Chet Faker and Courtney Barnett being among those to excel on a national and international level. So who’ll be waving our flag for 2015? We pick the cream of the Australian crop.

waax

WAAX

A five-piece force to be reckoned with, Brisbane’s WAAX are becoming the must-see act in the Australian music scene. Throwing crowds into an uproar with their punk-inspired rock, they’ve received love on triple j through their debut single Wisdom Teeth, and winning an Unearthed slot to play BIGSOUND 2014. In addition, they’ve supported fellow Aussie rockers Stonefield, The Delta Riggs and Kingswood as well as international acts UPSET and White Lung. Their debut EP is on its way, and we’ve got high hopes for WAAX throughout 2015.

Jesse Davidson

jessed

2014 was a year of relentless touring and recording for Jesse Davidson, making the most of free time since finishing high school. Not only did he support Mac DeMarco and Ball Park Music on their national tours, but played extensively in support of his debut EP Ocean. On the scene since making it to the finals in the 2012 triple j Unearthed High competition, Davidson has been solidifying a fan base and with his dreamy guitar and soaring vocals. Kicking off 2015 with a performance at the upcoming Laneway Festival, 2015 is sure to be his biggest year yet.

Apes

apes

Melbourne
four-piece Apes combine garage-rock with an indie punk influence to create a totally unique, fresh new sound. Their rough and ready melodies and strong
hooks have already seen them play Big Day Out and Groovin The Moo, as well as supporting Band of Skulls, Spiderbait, Fidlar and Royal Blood. With a high-energy live show and a stage presence like no other, I have no doubt that we’ll be hearing a lot more of Apes this year!

Winterbourne

winter

Over the past few years, Central Coast folk duo Winterbourne (aka James Draper and Jordan Brady) have mesmerised audiences with their strong vocal melodies and harmonies weaving through acoustic guitar and rhythmic drumming. The pair had spent a lot of time developing their sound from their early busking days, which lead to the eventual recording of their debut EP, All But The Sun. Thanks to further airplay from Triple J, Winterbourne have become a must watch act in 2015.

Moses Gunn Collective

MGC
