Lil Wayne has DJ Khaled to thank for his first ever no. 1 single in Australia. In fact, it’s Lil Wayne’s first ever no. 1 single anywhere outside the USA, ever.
Khaled’s bubbly new posse cut I’m The One, featuring Lil Wayne alongside Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper and Migos’ Quavo has elbowed its way to the very top of the ARIA charts this week, knocking both Ed Sheeran and Kendrick Lamar off the throne. Shape Of You and HUMBLE currently sit at spots two and three respectively. It’s also topped the UK charts, another first for Tunechi.

Despite an extremely prolific and successful career, Lil Wayne has had surprisingly little chart success outside the USA. He’s never had a chart-topping single or album outside the USA, with only one exception – Tha Carter IV hit no. 1 in Canada back in 2011. It reached no. 9 in Australia.
Lil Wayne’s last top 10 hit in Australia was Sucker For Pain from the Suicide Squad soundtrack; the collaboration with Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Logic, Ty Dolla Sign and X Ambassadors hit no. 7 last year. Prior to that he’s only had five tracks in the ARIA top 10, most recently in 2013.

It seems pointless to get my hopes up or even report on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V. Especially after reports surfaced last year that Birdman had canned negotiations with Wayne in the ongoing $51million lawsuit Wayne has against his estranged label Cash Money.
But here I go again taking Birdman’s word as law. In an interview with Billboard during the NBA All-Star Weekend, the Cash Money CEO and Mannie Fresh offered up the six glorious words all Wayne fans have been waiting for – “You will get [Tha Carter V] this year.”
This year! There is still 314 days left in the year which gives Birdman plenty of time to pay Wayne or settle the lawsuit in one way or another.
“Me and Wayne will be aight,” Birdman said. “I’ma make that work. That’s my son and I love him, and we’ll make it happen.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as simple as the album just being released once their differences are settled. Fresh went on to say that he’d like to redo his contributions to the album. “I think my songs should be revamped,” Fresh said. “I don’t know what the other songs are but I don’t like the songs that I did because it took too long to come out.”
As exciting as Birdman’s promise is, we can’t forget that earlier this year Wayne reportedly told TMZ that Birdman is “full of shit” for saying Tha Carter V “is definitely coming out,” and that Birdman has made no moves to give him the payment he’s demanding for its release.
Wayne took a more subtle approach this time round, continuing his #FREEC5 campaign by previewing his new line of Young Money merch on Instagram and tagging each with #FREEC5. You can check out some the new merch below. There are no official release dates on the clothing but I think we can assume it will be available before Tha Carter V.
You can also check out a vignette produced by The FADER and Beats By Dre, featuring Lil Wayne talk about Louisiana’s deep sense of culture, feeling at home on stage in his city and being part of New Orleans’ musical fabric.

Lil Wayne has given a sit-down interview on ABC’s Nightline, during which he has shared some of his own thoughts about the Black Lives Matter movement.
The interview began simply enough, with Weezy talking about his controversial lyrics and image, noting that he felt like he was misunderstood by the public. Things got really interesting in the final two minutes, however, when the interviewer brought up the issue of racism. When asked what he thought about the Black Lives Matter movement he asked the reporter for clarification on what she meant before remarking that “It just sounds weird. I don’t know if you can put a name on it… it’s somebody got shot by a policeman for a fucked up reason.”
The interview then took a negative turn with the rapper seemingly disagreeing with the notion that awareness needed to be raised about the treatment of Afro-Americans; “I’m a young, black, rich motherfucker. If that don’t let you know that America understand that black motherfuckers matter then I don’t know what is… don’t come at me with that dumb shit ma’am… my life matter, especially to my bitches.”
When the reporter went to ask if he felt connected to the community, Wayne responded by stating that he didn’t “feel connected to a damn thing that ain’t got nothing to do with me. If you do, you crazy as shit.”
Wayne ended the interview by proclaiming that he was “no politician” and storming out, attempting a mic drop through his shirt in the process and revealing his swag via one hell of a cap back-flip. Watch the full interview below.
Wayne has since apologised via TMZ, claiming that the ABC’s questions about his daughter threw him off.
Wayne told TMZ that “When the reporter began asking me questions about my daughter being labelled a bitch and a hoe, I got agitated. From there, there was no thought put into her questions and my responses. Apologies to anyone who was offended.”

Lil Wayne has repeatedly worried his fans throughout the past few months. From multiple hospitalisations, apparently due to suffering from seizures (possibly related to his addiction to lean), and this weekend he posted a harrowing message to social media, tweeting that he’s “defenseless and mentally defeated.” The exact cause for this message is unknown, but considering his health problems, as well as his ongoing legal battles with labels Young Money and Universal Music Group.
I AM NOW DEFENSELESS AND mentally DEFEATED & I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fanz but I'm dun

ain't lookin for sympathy, just serenity

Many other artists have voiced their support, including Chance the Rapper and Young Thug. Since posting those tweets, Weezy also appeared on stage at a Drake concert in Houstin, at which he proclaimed (not for the first time), “Fuck Cash Money.” Wayne’s ongoing legal issues with the label; just last month, courtroom setbacks were reported for his fight against both Cash Money and its parent label Universal Music Group, all in all leading to ongoing delays with Tha Carter V.
Drake, who owes Lil Wayne a LOT for the support he gave to his early career, has now voiced his strong support for the rap legend by way of an Instagram post:
It’s sobering to see all this dirty laundry aired out in public, to see the setbacks preventing artists from releasing their art. Particularly considering the rise of incredibly successful independent artists (namely Chance the Rapper and more recently Frank Ocean), the once-hidden cracks and crooks within the relationships between artist and label continue to grow. We can only hope that Lil Wayne finds the strength to maintain mental, and physical health as the fight continues.

It looks like Lil Wayne took on too many lawsuits at once. A Federal Court judge has stalled Wayne’s $20 million lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), in which Wayne accuses UMG of screwing him out of millions for his work with Nicki Minaj, Drake and Tyga – until he has settled his lawsuit against Birdman and Cash Money – in which Wayne claims Birdman owes him tens of millions of dollars for his postponed album, Tha Carter V.
The Federal Court judge’s decision is a major setback for Wayne as it sides with UMG. The judge has agreed that the lawsuit Wayne has against Birdman, and this one, are substantially similar and the outcome of one will effect the other.
Despite the rumours that Wayne and Birdman have been working out their differences, Wayne officially axed any settlement talks in May. This means it could be a year or more before Wayne settles that suit and sees any money from either party. Considering the time he’ll be spending in court, not to mention his recent health scares and hospitalisations, it looks like Tha Carter V won’t be out any time soon at all. Wayne did recently announce not one, but two new album, but the status and reality of these are currently unknown, too.

The High Times Cannabis Concentrates Cup Show in sunny California certainly had a head-turning lineup, including sets from B.o.B and Lil Wayne. With fans excited to see the performers, Weezy graced the stage, only to cut his show extremely short moments later. Sure we’ve all been there when the artist just plays an anticlimactically short 45-minute set, but how about three minutes?
Despite appearing hyped at first, Wayne did just that. Performing just a handful of songs, after about three minutes he seemingly became distracted by something offstage and proceeded to shout, “Don’t you ever call me to do this s–t again!” He rapped just a few more bars and then walked off. According to Lil Wayne HQ, Wayne ironically didn’t like the laid-back crowd of stoners, saying “You guys are too mellow. I’m from the South we turn up there”
High Times, the company behind the event issued a statement to Daily Mail regarding the sudden disappearance, saying that they are simply confused why he walked off.
“Wayne suddenly ended his performance after just four songs when he was contractually committed to performing for an hour for the fans. We are truly baffled by why Lil Wayne would do this in front of thousands of Cannabis Cup attendees – in total disregard for his fans – and are awaiting an explanation from his team.”
Whether it was something just as small as the crowd being too ‘mellow’, or a more pressing issue, it’s likely we will not be finding out any time soon. Either way, it’s not exactly the best practice to be walking off stage four songs in, regardless of how involved the crowd may seem. Considering Weezy has experienced multiple seizures in recent weeks, we can only hope that this walk-off was not the result of a health problem.

A divisive and prolific artist since the word go, Lil Wayne is possibly rap’s most popular guest. There doesn’t appear to be a world record for this feat, but those who doubt whether Wayne would take the title could be shut down with just one look at this new website. A Redditor, named doogywassa, has painstakingly compiled every single feature spot from Weezy into one place.
With entries spanning from 1997 until the present day, it’s an astounding catalogue that covers nearly twenty years and any number of incredible tracks. Going back to Nelly and Birdman collaborations in 2002, trawling through the site is like a walk down memory lane. From Notorious B.I.G to early Kanye, Fall Out Boy or Bow Wow anyone?
Dusting off classics like Destiny’s Child Soldier and Eminem’s Drop The World, you can skim through obscure early years or unreleased tracks as well as recent releases and interviews. Doogywassa has done an impressive job, but there’s still no way to know if this site accounts for every entry from Lil Wayne’s vast career.
Another initiative spawned by the infamous Reddit, you can also check the reactions and comments of other redactors here. As always the thread covers some intelligent points, from stylistic musings…
To other suggestions as to how to categorise Weezy’s achievements…
It appears that the hard working doogywassa has also created other hip-hop catalogues. Check it out here for an actually decent amount of content for artists like Tupac, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and more.

Lil Wayne has been forced to cancel a show in Las Vegas over the weekend after suffering yet another seizure. His third in the space of just a month, the New Orleans rapper was set to play a pre party for Sunday’s historic UFC 200 at the TAO nightclub in Las Vegas but suffered the seizure just moments before he was to take the stage.
Thankfully it appears that Weezy has now been discharged from intensive care and is reportedly recovering at his home in Miami. Like his previous two seizures, which forced the rapper’s private jet to conduct two separate emergency landings in Nebraska after occurring mid-flight, this latest seizure has been attributed to the rapper failing to adhere to the required intake of his medication for epilepsy (reportedly failing to take medication at all). He has dealt with the condition for several years and has had intermittent episodes like this throughout, with two in a single week in 2013 and one even being considered near-fatal. The increased frequency of these attacks in the last month has many gravely concerned.
Many with limited knowledge of his condition were quick to point the blame for the seizures at Weezy’s highly abusive consumption of lean, he had been seen downing as many as five bottles of cough syrup at a show he played the night before his first two seizures earlier in June. While severely detrimental to general health and wellbeing, over-consumption of opiates found in lean has less than tenuous links to resultant seizures.
Nevertheless, this latest health scare has fans considerably worried for the health of the Young Money rapper. We voiced some of our own concerns after his last hospitalisation and they are unfortunately still ringing true. Hopefully this latest incident encourages Weezy to adopt a more responsible approach to his health.
We wish Lil Wayne the speediest of recoveries.

We post playlists and new music all day and all week long, but the music just keeps on coming, doesn’t it? In one of our newest weekly segments, here’s your Friday Rap Wrap, guaranteed nutritious and delicious for your listening pleasure.
Lil Wayne, Pray to the Lord (prod. Streetrunner)
Alright, this one isn’t exactly new, but it’s a new version of one of Lil Wayne’s classics. producer Streetrunner has been busy re-mixing and re-mastering some of the best tracks from his early 2000s mixtapes, and this might just be the best one yet. Pray To The Lord hits right in the feels – particularly in the wake of Tunechi’s recent health scares.
Streetrunner writes, “This was one of the main songs that made me want to mix and master these old Wayne leaked tracks I produced. This classic had millions of views/ listens online and it was the worst possible version anyone could ever hear of this song. Now I bring the fans the new crispy mixed and mastered version. Enjoy!”
Mick Jenkins, Sunkissed ft. theMIND (Prod. Da-P)
Mick Jenkins is far and away one of my favourite recent discoveries (yes, I’m aware I’m really late to this table.) We’ve been waiting patiently as the young rapper gears up for his debut album [T]he [H]ealing [C]omponent, and this week, he has given us a peck on the cheek with Sunkissed, featuring vocals from theMIND and production from Da-P.
This track is truly wonderful, which is unsurprising. Opening up to an ambient atmosphere, his low-hanging verse kicks into gear. His fluid flow and illustrative lyrics continue to amaze me, notably for his ability to come across as both menacing and tranquil at the same time. I can’t wait for his album. Oh, and ICYMI, be sure to check out Mick Jenkins’ phenomenal Badbadnotgood collab Hyssop of Love.
Blu & Nottz, Atlantis
Now this is what I call a stellar collaboration. Blu and Nottz recently announces that they were joining forces once for a new EP, Titans in the Flesh, having previously released Gods in the Spirit back in 2013. They have now unveiled its first single, Atlantis, and it is tremendously good. The calming bounce of Nottz’ sample-laden instrumental lays the perfect groundwork for Blu’s rhythmic verses.
The track’s story is relevant to the EP title, with Atlantis being a mythical, once-vibrant civilisation that now resides somewhere deep in the ocean. Blu’s lyrics detail his own haven, in a conscious, lyrically explorative manner, while remaining animated, even dreamy. The seven track album comes out later this month on July 15.

Fudge (Prefuse 73 x Michael Christmas), In My Shoes ft. Alex Mali
Another collaborative track, welcome to Fudge, a new duo consisting of producer Prefuse 73 and rapper Michael Christmas. Prefuse has previously worked with Ghostface Killah, Aesop Rock, El-P, MF DOOM and more, while Christmas’ last release, 2015’s What A Weird Day, featured guests including Rome Fortune and Mac Miller.
The track has a glistening electronic instrumental, and coupled with Mali’s honeyed hook, makes for a beautiful soundscape beneath Christmas’ verses. His flow has a real classic vibe to it, albeit speedier, and he shows off his abilities from the opening bars onwards. I’m interested to see where this collaboration goes – it’s an interesting fusion of future soul and hip-hop, and while the instrumental borders on being slightly too tropical for my tastes at first, it grows spacier and more futuristic as it progresses.

Some people invest in memory foam pillows, while others tackle chronic pain with specially designed back-friends beds. Not Birdman.
This week, the rapper was a guest on an ESPN talk show called Highly Questionable. They discussed many interesting topics (which are a tad difficult to understand, as he kind of mumbles his way through), which include his upbringing and the influence of his brother, of how discovering god and the bible in prison changed his life, and about his upcoming documentary series, getting a $30 million contract at age 19 and how he thought he was going to die young.
https://www.facebook.com/HighlyQuestionable/videos/1114346158625062/
One of the hosts, Dan Le Batard, quizzes Birdman with a true or false round: “You had a million dollars cash that you actually slept on?” to which Birdman replied, “I still sleep on a million dollars cash. That’s just a fatuation for me in life. I do that and Imma do that until I die.” He reiterates, “Imma do that til I die. I got a million dollars on my mattress, under my sheets. I just feel the need to do that. I was fortunate to blessed to be able to do it and I sleep on it every night with my Versace bedspread on top of it.”
Is it comfortable? “It don’t matter,” he insists, explaining that his bed is three California King mattresses, which is a few inches larger than a regular King size. Is he worried about theft? “Well, if you comin’ in that room you gonna get the business,” he replies, to giggles from the co-hosts. “My house is secure, I protect myself.”
Another true or false question asked whether he and Lil Wayne bet $10,000 on the computer game Madden. True that they used to gamble a lot, he says, but false that they let the computer do the playing: Birdman and Wayne would play against each other. “Every time we played at least ten grand,” he confirmed. “At least, minimum. He also says that he let Wayne win because “that’s my son. You know how that goes, you gotta let the little one win, sometimes. Not all the time.”
Wayne, who has also appeared on the sports show, responded to the video with a tweet:
highly questionable is hiiiiiighly questionable today
