Jungle Jams

Only two days to go until our very first Jungle Jams! Head down to the Captain Cook Hotel in Paddington from 7 pm for food, drinks and some great local music. One of those bands is the very wonderful Colour Cage. They answered our questions and here are the answers!

• Thanks for doing this Q&A! What are you up to today?
  Karl is driving the coast from San Fransisco to LA and currently made it as far as San Luis Obispo. Phan and Ben are currently in the studio mixing one of the tracks from an upcoming EP we’re about to release.
• What are the three most important things we should know about you?
  Karl likes his lettuce fried. Phan has a beautiful little kitty called Swoop, which he uses to attract women. Ben is a keen horticulturalist with a penchant for pesto.
• When did you first start playing music? How did it all begin?
  I started playing music before my memory kicked in. I think I was 3 when I first picked up a guitar. My dad played self-taught folk guitar and he just showed me what he knew. Ben was pretty ambivalent towards music until he discovered the bass when he was 13, and Phan has been making irritating noises for as long as anyone can remember.
• How did your current project get started?
  This project – Colour Cage – has been an evolving musical creation. We are a three piece that enjoy playing with new people when we can and spent the first few year consolidating our musical style and sound. We still can’t give you a name to put it under.
• Tell us about the first gig you ever played…
  The first gig I think we ever played as just the three of us was probably at the Coogee Bay Hotel. It was pretty surreal as we had only recently written these songs and the Julia Stone came out and played a surprise set just before we started… the general consensus was ‘ah shieeet’… but it was sweet I think.
• What are some of your biggest musical influences?
  This question could take a long time to answer. We all like a lot of different kinds of music that sometimes don’t appear to directly relate to the songs that we write… but trust us they do. Here goes a few anyway…its sort of chronological:

• If you could collaborate on a song with anyone, who would you choose and why?
  Flying Lotus. He just has an amazing sense of freedom in his music (and he could probably bring in all the people he knows which would mean being able to collaborate with even more people!)

• What have been the best parts of recording with Jungle Studios so far?
  Phan works there. So the vibes are super professional and handsome.

• What can we look forward to from your set at Jungle Jams?
  Some heavy grooves and some not so heavy grooves. With just 3 of us, its pretty raw but we love the challenge of painting an awesome sonic picture with just 1 guitar, 1 bass, 1 set of drums, 1.5 voices, and the occasional help of a drum pad. Hopefully you’ll here fractions of those influences we mentioned and the songs take you somewhere!
• What have you got planned for the rest of 2015?
  Releasing our debut EP in early 2015, which should hopefully be 8 tracks of pure eargasm, writing/working on new tracks, recording those new tracks for EP #2, gigs, gigs and more gigs.
