E^ST is a name you should familiarise yourself with very quickly, as it’s a name you will no doubt be seeing everywhere by the end of the year. The 17 year old newcomer from NSW’s Central Coast has two EPs under her belt and a rapidly growing fan base, and for good reason. Her off-kilter alternative-pop sounds make for an enthralling listen with each and every track, and even though she’s ticking off serious goals on her career bucket list like wowing Australia with her Like A Version last year on triple J, you still get the feeling she’s only just getting started.
Currently touring the country alongside Dylan Joel, Kilter and UV Boi as part of the all ages mini-festival, Tomorrow’s People, it’s not going to be long at all until she is gets the recognition she deserves – which is why we jumped at the chance to ask her about the three albums that have changed her life.

Jeff Buckley, Grace
I remember the first time I listened to this album. As soon as I finished it, I immediately had to listen to it again. Not only did he have one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard, the emotion behind the music and lyrics and the way he performed them was just astonishing.

The Dear Hunter, The Color Spectrum
This is an album that’s made up of 9 EPs, and each EP is based on a different colour (yellow, orange, indigo, violet, red, black, white, blue and green). I’ve never seen such versatility in a band. They go from beachy music to theatrical rock to folk to dark electronica and it’s totally mind blowing.

Deftones, White Pony
Deftones are one of my all time favourite bands, and this album is probably my favourite of theirs (Diamond Eyes a very close second). I love all the different textures and elements they explore within their respected genre. Chino Moreno is what every frontman ought to be.

At the ripe, old age of 17 years old, NSW’s Central Coast singer E^ST has just recently released her sophomore EP, The Alley. Following on from her debut, titled Old Age (no pun intended before), E^ST has shown she really knows what she’s doing now, and has built upon her already solid foundation from her first release to lift herself into new territory. Demonstrating a natural knack for song writing with bucketloads of emotion, she keeps it real whilst pushing herself further and further, and it’s been an exciting ride to say the least watching her grow.
Now, with an East Coast tour under her belt as well, we wanted to get to know her a little bit more. What makes her think, feel, party and cry? We found out all that and more, and you can check it all out below!
My favourite track to wake up to is…Road to Joy – Bright Eyes
The song’s full of enough apathy, angst, hopefulness and pessimism to make anyone feel like they must be awake and alive in the world.
The best track for cooking is…Friends For Dinner – The Land Before Time 5
Nothing says “a great meal” like having friends for dinner.
The best track for spring cleaning is…Cleanin’ Out My Closet – Eminem
I don’t care how white this song is, it will have you cleaning out your closet and feeling pissed off about it.
The ultimate road trip track is…Yellow Submarine – The Beatles
You can’t not sing along to this song… I’ve tried, but it’s just not possible.
My favourite love song is…First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes
Yes I’m a Bright Eyes fan.
The best track for sweet love makin’ is…I’ll Make Love To You – Boyz to Men
I mean, the title says it all.
The track that always gets the party started is…7 Words – Deftones
I could’ve answered every single question so far with this song, but I thought I’d save it for number 7. Chino Moreno with dreadlocks can get anyone’s party started, if you know what I mean.
The best track to wind down a crowd is…Tiptoe Through the Tulips – Tiny Tim
This will make everyone feel confused, scared, disturbed, yet oddly entranced.
My favourite drunken karaoke track is…We Didn’t Start the Fire – Billy Joel
If anyone can sing every word whilst being drunk, I’ll marry them.
My favourite song to sing in the shower is…Tell Him – Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion
I sing both parts.
A song that always makes me cry is…Two – The Antlers
This song has definitely made me cry on a number of occasions. Lyrical masterpiece.
I love going to sleep listening to…Glosoli – Sigur Ros
I guarantee you’ll have amazing dreams if you listen to this as you’re falling asleep.
I can’t stop dancing when I hear…Come on Eileen – The Dexy’s Midnight Runners
No, I didn’t hear this for the first time in Perks Of Being A Wallflower, I swear…
E^ST’s The Alley EP is out now.
