Drake has announced a headline tour of Australia and New Zealand, bringing his Boy eets World Tour down under in early November. As if we weren’t already overwhelmed with an incredible array of visiting hip-hop and R&B artists (Migos, The Weeknd, Run The Jewels, Vince Staples, SZA and Noname among others), the 6 god himself will be gracing our stadiums with his presence, and we’re pretty damn excited.

Drake last visited Australia in 2015, where he headlined the now-defunct Future Music Festival. In the time since, he’s released two albums, Views and More Life, as well as What A Time To Be Alive, a collaborative mixtape with Future. In general, he’s spent the last two or so years continuously building himself up as one of the most successful and well known artists on the planet.

Drizzy will be performing twice in Sydney and Melbourne, with additional shows in Brisbane and Auckland. Sorry, everywhere else.

Tickets go on sale on 15 September at the times listed below, with a pre-sale available from September 12 (details here).

DJ Semtex has released an extensive new interview with Drake via OVO Sound Radio (and Soundcloud. The pair reflect on their seven year relationship, while touching on a massive range of subjects from Drake’s relationship with, and his thoughts on Kanye West, the Grammy Awards, his thoughts on rapping in general (and interestingly, that he nearly took all actual rapping off Views), his love of grime and the UK hp-hop scene, and more. Drake begins the interview by praising Semtex, noting that he specifically wanted to run a new interview with him, as other interviewers haven’t been able to get as deep.

Whether you like Drake or not, this is by far one of, if not the most honest, open and candid interview he’s ever delivered. It provides a really refreshing insight into so many current topics as well as harking back to much of his history, including the beginnings of his relationship with Lil Wayne and So Far Gone, working with Dr Dre and the now-dead Detox, and so much more. Semtex holds nothing back, talking about how people criticised Pop Style featuring The Throne, and commenting about the criticism Kanye West received during his TLOP tour. “I’m not really sure what he’s referring to half the time, cos in the same breath, I went from being… like working on a project with him, to him sorta publicly shitting on me and DJ Khaled for being on the radio too much.”

The interview took place one day after the Grammys, and he also took the time to slam the Academy for voting for Hotline Bling instead of One Dance. “I’m apparently a ‘rapper’ even though Hotline Bling is not a rap song,” he said. “The only category that they can manage to fit me in is a ‘rap’ category, maybe because I’ve rapped in the past, or because I’m black, I can’t figure out why. Just like I can’t figure out why One Dance wasn’t nominated… I wanna be like Michael Jackson, I wanna be like artists that I looked up to, those are pop songs but I never get any credit to that.”

Listen below, or you can have a read of a transcript here thanks to the good folks at Nation of Billions.

Taylor Swift has been known to change her styles in the past, shocking critics with her bold move from country to pop back in early 2010s, but nothing has been as drastic as what may come next. According to The Sun, which isn’t necessarily the most reputable of sources, T Swizzle is exploring a “new urban sound” alongside the current king in the scene Drake.

The unnamed source in the article went on to say, “Taylor is always looking at ways to grow as an artist…she’s not afraid of experimenting so is working with a lot of different faces to see if she suits a new sound.

Well, okay then.

The source went on to explain that Drake is both producing and featuring his own vocals, making for “a real mix of edgier hip-hop and R&B sounds”, which they compared to her 2014 hit Bad Blood. “[It] had a less pop vibe, especially once Kendrick Lamar featured on it, and was a big hit, so she thinks her fans will like her going in this direction.”

At this point in her career Taylor Swift could do literally anything and sell it for millions. Now, we hardly think she’s going to start spitting bars and appropriating culture a la Iggy Azalea (we hope not, anyway), but this isn’t great news. And we probably don’t need to explain why.

Regardless of our, or your, opinion of this fateful coming together, Taylor Swift and Drake are the biggest artists in the world. If they do indeed release music together, it will be fucking huge. Both artists are inexplicably endlessly popular, with billions of streams and dollars between them. Whether or not their music will be any good remains to be seen, but it sure as hell will be unavoidable.

We do not want an urban Taylor Swift album.

Earlier this year Taylor Swift was seen rapping Future and Drake’s Jumpman in an advertisement for Apple Music, prompting sales to increase by a whopping 431%. Considering Drake’s relationship with Apple, it may well be possible that they’ve been working on a new ad rather than a new album. We’re hoping so, anyway.

Instead of receiving gifts on his birthday, Drake, who just turned the big 3-0, decided to instead give something back to his fans in the form of announcing a brand new project. Set for a December release, it is to be titled More Life. The little information he has provided fans thus far has already been the cause for a great deal of internet rumour and speculation, with the digging and guesswork well underway regarding exactly what it might entail, who it will feature, and what it will sound like.

The announcement came via his OVO Sound radio show on Apple Music, during which Toronto’s king also treated fans to FOUR brand new tracks, three of which will feature on the upcoming project. Sonically all of these tracks are dark, gritty, trap influenced bangers, a sound which although not new for Drizzy, works extremely well. From a brash diss track to fierce collaborations, let’s dive into what More Life will entail.

What do we know so far?

It’s a very interesting time for Drake, who has seen out the past two years with unbelievable success. Drizzy has taken on his role as actor-turned-singing-rapper and meme king, and shifted way up to, well, king of music in general. Embracing his role as not only an artist (both in the mainstream and smaller sectors, such as within UK grime), but a meme and gif generator with impeccable comic timing and the ability to laugh at himself while still maintaining pride, respect and purpose, he’s gone on to become one of the most universally popular and recognised artists in the world. His new album Views has become one of the most successful records ever, with One Dance recently being crowned the most streamed song of all time. The really remarkable thing here is that he’s managed to do all of this despite the fact that the album was just not that generally well received from a critical standpoint. He’s almost untouchable in this sense – he’s just so popular and universally loved that criticism seems to get largely ignored.

With all of that in mind, we have a few questions that need answering. What is Drake cooking up next, what does he want to show both fans and peers, what format will it take, who will appear on it, and what will it sound like?

To start with, what do we already know about More Life? Not much, frankly. Drake’s keeping his cards really close to his chest for now, releasing relatively cryptic information, ready for the internet to pick at and decode. The most interesting point about the release so far is it being titled a ‘playlist’, so let’s break that down a bit.

Drake says that the release will be all original music, so it’s certainly not going to be a curated playlist in the traditional sense. He goes on to say that it will include “the fam”, which we assume to be his OVO family, and potentially extended to his group of friends including Kanye West, Rihanna, Gucci Mane, and his buddies over at Boy Better Know.

It also seems likely that the ‘playlist’ will be more of a group compilation (potentially an OVO Showcase, influenced by G.O.O.D’s Cruel Summer or Young Money/Cash Money’s We Are Young Money), or simply a Drake record with a plethora of features – as opposed to a fully collaborative project like his 2015 mixtape with Future, What a Time to Be Alive.

With Fake Love and Sneakin’ already for sale on iTunes, it also looks like there won’t be much of a change in terms of how it is delivered to fans. Considering that Drake has been the recipient of more than a few snarky comments regarding him selling mixtapes, and not giving them away as free releases, this is most likely why this release is not being called a mixtape – and why we probably won’t see more mixtapes from Drake in the near future.

Ultimately, calling this release a playlist is probably arbitrary, in terms of whether a ‘playlist’ is anything truly different to an ‘album’ or ‘mixtape’, except for steering him away from the aforementioned criticism of of not releasing a mixtape for free. If anything, it’s a pretty clever middle ground term, as it doesn’t insinuate the same wholesome finality of an album, but it doesn’t come with the underground, for-the-fans, expectations of a mixtape. Furthermore, Drake really is one of the more prolific artists at his level of fame, so to continuously give his projects different names is a creative way to keep the flow from feeling stagnant. Similarly, having announced the release about six weeks out, rather than the long-awaited and drawn out Views, and the totally unannounced surprise releases of WATTBA and IFRTITL, keeps his release process from feeling repetitive or overwhelming. Pretty nifty if you ask us.

As Ebro has pointed out, this might just be Drake’s final release for Cash Money, and that’s very interesting indeed – although titling it a playlist may in fact be keeping him within contract, as it is not being considered an actual album release.

Is this project one final hurrah? Is it simply something to get him over the contractual obligation line? Furthermore, what will this mean for the featured guests, as well as the lyrical content – as already hinted at by the disses? Is the More Life name, combined with the fact that the album cover is a photo of his father, indicating that his music, or even his record deal, has been given more life? Does More Life connect to his other album titles at all? All four recent major releases are titles after moments in the present day – the view from where he’s standing right now, enjoying what a fantastic time it is to be alive right now, warning others that if they’re only reading this now, they’re too late… and so on.

Let’s take a look at the four new tracks for a little more insight.

2 Birds 1 Stone

The first track to premiere was the now controversial 2 Birds 1 Stone, a diss track which call G.O.O.D Music president Pusha T a studio drug dealer, and further disses Kid Cudi, who has recently been bravely open about his serious struggles with mental health and suicidal thoughts. His mention in this track is a response to Cudi’s own diss, having previously revived the whole ghostwriter debate issue while pointing fingers at Drake and Kanye West.

For Pusha’s subliminal diss on H.G.T.V., “These n**gas Call of Duty cause their killings ain’t real/With a questionable pen so the feelin’ ain’t real”, Drizzy responded with an extensive verse detailing how King Push’s drug dealing history he so often raps about was simply a ruse, “If you ask me though you ain’t lining the trunk with kilos/You bagging weed watching Pacino with all your n**gas”

Whether or not this beef will sizzle or burn out is anyone’s guess, but considering Push’s lyrics have continued to grow smarter and stronger on his recent releases, it’ll be interesting to see if he responds, or if it’s all a bit of friendly fire.

While Yeezy managed to work out the beef between himself and Cudi calling him “my brother”, it seems like Drake hasn’t gotten over the not so subtle comments that were made over Twitter. “Everyone thinks they’re soooo great. Talkin top 5 and be having 30 people write songs for them. Ye, Drake, whoever…They aint fuckin with me.”

It’s really harsh of Drake to kick Cudi while he’s so deeply and darkly down. Drake spits it out as if we haven’t spent the past few years trying to break down the taboos surrounding mental illness in hip-hop and beyond: “You were the man on the moon/Now you just go through your phases…/ You stay xanned and perked up/So when reality set in you don’t gotta face it.” Irresponsible. Really irresponsible. The entire music world has rallied around the hip-hop artist to support him at this time, and Drake genuinely shouldn’t have kept this line in, even if he did write it before Cudi publicly revealed his struggles. For now let’s set this aside, to be revisited in another article very soon.

Wanna Know (Remix)

The second track Drake premiered was arguably the most surprising, and as a remix, we can assume it is the outlier that won’t feature on the December release. Despite this, it’s one of the coolest releases of late, with him reaching out once again to the UK scene and covering one of the most exciting rising talents, Dave. Whether you like it or not, Drake’s co-signs are powerful tools to become overnight sensations, from Kodak Black to the more collaborative projects with Skepta, who, although a huge name in the grime scene, was really thrust into the mainstream spotlight thanks to his budding bromance with Drake. It’s exciting to see him work his magic on another upcoming name from that scene – hopefully well be seeing more and more of Dave in the coming months!

Sneakin’ Feat. 21 Savage

Keeping his commitment to the younger emcees going, Sneakin’ is his first ever collaboration with Atlanta’s newest rising star 21 Savage. Over this fast-paced trap beat, produced by the one and only London On Da Track, the pair let loose some brutal bars, making this one worthwhile collaboration.

Fake Love

When you have Vinylz and Frank Dukes, the production team namely behind Travis Scott’s Pick Up The Phone, you know it’s already going to be your new jam. Add some funky instrumentation, an absolutely booming beat, and Drake’s classic catchy hooks, it won’t take long until this is on the airways. Fake Love interestingly does showcase a new angle for him though, as he often talks about romance in his music, this new tune is refreshingly the opposite and a reflection of all the fake affection he receives by those swayed by his influence he has as one of the world’s biggest artists.

So, what does it all mean?

At this point there’s many more questions than answers, and ultimately the best way forward is to just wait out the next few weeks and see what else we’re given in the meantime. But damn, speculation sure is fun.

It’s official: One Dance is Drake’s most successful song to date.

More than that, it’s the more streamed track of all time. OF ALL TIME!

First, the single saw the Canadian reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time and now it’s nabbed him the title of Most Streamed Song on Spotify. The standout track which features WizKid (who has recently hinted the two have another record coming out soon) and Kyla has overtaken Major Lazer‘s MØ and DJ Snake-featuring Lean On, which was given the title last year when it hit 526 million streams worldwide. Lifted from this year’s highly successful (albeit not that great) Views, the song broke records for first-week streams.

It’s hardly surprising considering the song has reached no. 1 all around the world and has earned a four-time platinum status, but it’s kind of staggering to look at things from a numbers perspective. The track has racked up more than 882 million plays – and that’s just on Spotify.

It’s interesting to note that the success comes despite the the fact that Drake has strong links with Spotify rival Apple. In fact, Views was released exclusively on Apple Music and iTunes for a week before it was made available across other platforms, including Spotify. Drake has also earned the top spot on Spotify, and has amassed over 36 million monthly listeners and over eight billion streams in total.

Lil Wayne has repeatedly worried his fans throughout the past few months. From multiple hospitalisations, apparently due to suffering from seizures (possibly related to his addiction to lean), and this weekend he posted a harrowing message to social media, tweeting that he’s “defenseless and mentally defeated.” The exact cause for this message is unknown, but considering his health problems, as well as his ongoing legal battles with labels Young Money and Universal Music Group.

Many other artists have voiced their support, including Chance the Rapper and Young Thug. Since posting those tweets, Weezy also appeared on stage at a Drake concert in Houstin, at which he proclaimed (not for the first time), “Fuck Cash Money.” Wayne’s ongoing legal issues with the label; just last month, courtroom setbacks were reported for his fight against both Cash Money and its parent label Universal Music Group, all in all leading to ongoing delays with Tha Carter V.

Drake, who owes Lil Wayne a LOT for the support he gave to his early career, has now voiced his strong support for the rap legend by way of an Instagram post:

It’s sobering to see all this dirty laundry aired out in public, to see the setbacks preventing artists from releasing their art. Particularly considering the rise of incredibly successful independent artists (namely Chance the Rapper and more recently Frank Ocean), the once-hidden cracks and crooks within the relationships between artist and label continue to grow. We can only hope that Lil Wayne finds the strength to maintain mental, and physical health as the fight continues.

Bonus track Hotline Bling aside, Drake has been a little slow to helping fans to music videos following the success of Views.

But things are soon to change. Revealing some details via Instagram Drake has previewed elements of a short film titled Please Forgive Me and it seems that music from Views will be featured throughout the film. Seeing as Drake has been sighted working on shots for One Dance, Controlla, and Child’s Play  there’s speculation that these could be the tracks to be featured.

It’s not the first time Drizzy has embarked on a grand audiovisual endeavour, the artist dropped short film Jungle prior to the release of If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late in February 2015.

Director Spiff TV has also been dropping some details on the upcoming project, describing the Child’s Play video as “epic” when chatting with Billboard. “Drake had the vision and it’s gonna be special,” he shared. “Like the way Michael Jackson used to shoot his videos. Together, we killed the sh**. You’ll be surprised to see the cameo and the lead roles.”

As taken as the pair are with the project they have remained tight-lipped over when we’ll be seeing the final product. The only details so far is that the project will be dropping “sometime in the near future.”

"PLEASE FORGIVE ME" featuring music from the album Views COMING SOON

Just when we thought the biggest story in music this week had been decided early with the Internet-breaking announcement of Frank Ocean’s Boys Don’t Cry being released this Friday, Kanye West is here to make it very clear that nobody upstages Kanye West.

Appearing at Drake’s hometown OVO Fest in Toronto, Kanye helped Drizzy run through Pop Style before giving huge renditions of Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1Famous and Runaway. Yeezy then decided to blow the roof off Toronto and then hinted not so subtly at all at a collaboration album between himself and Drake. Watch the video below:

“Are y’all ready for this album”, Kanye asks, telling Toronto he’s not talking about The Life Of Pablo or Views, instead pointing at Drake who walked over to join him. As the spotlight shone on both of them, the Toronto crowd erupted.

This is by no means an official announcement or any indication that there is any recorded material yet for an album between the pair. Kanye has previously hinted at a project between the two back when Views was released earlier in the year, mentioning a mixtape they had been going to work on. Kanye’s statements tonight are certainly very eyebrow raising and will have the Internet rife with speculation until the situation is clarified.

Not to get too ahead of ourselves, but a collab between two of hip-hop’s stars on its highest tier may outshine even Watch The Throne in terms of hype. Fingers crossed the pair aren’t just teasing us right now.

It’s only been three months since Canadian rapper and singer Drake dropped his fourth studio album VIEWS, the albums breaking records for how many records it’s breaking, and Drizzy shows no sign of slowing down. Known for his insane work ethic releasing two full length mixtapes last year, Drake looks to be topping this once more with the announcement of yet another tape.

While on the road for the Summer Sixteen tour with Atlanta’s autotune king Future, Drake announced to the Kansas City crowd, “protect yourselves and each other,” going on to say, “when I go and work on this new mixtape and come back to Kansas City and I drop that shit, I want to see everybody!”

Stunned fans have proclaimed their support, already throwing out hypothetical names for the upcoming project. The most popular of which, From The 6, a throwback to when the album was originally titled Views From The 6. Going further, others support If You’re Reading This It’s 2 Late, a sequel to the early 2015 project.

Nonetheless it’ll simply be a waiting game until Drake announces the project, and who knows, there may even be that full length Gucci Mane project which is being rumoured. So make sure you keep your eyes out for the new Champagne Papi, set to pop in no time.

This is an opening line I can absolutely say we did not expect to be writing in 2016: After nine weeks at the top of the Billboard charts with his record-breaking album Views, Drake has lost the top spot to Blink 182 and their new album California.

In their first week of release, California debuted at no. 1 with an impressive 1860,000 sales and equivalents. Interestingly, 170,000 of that were traditional album sales, not streaming. In terms of first week sales, it’s the third highest selling rock record of 2016 after Radiohead (173,000) and David Bowie (174,000). It also marks the pop punk band’s first no. 1 in fifteen years, and only their second ever, the first being Take Off Your Pants and Jacket back in 2001. Take Off Your Pants held the top spot for one week, and it will be interesting to see if California can outlast it.

The album marks a massive return for the band, whose frontman Tom DeLonge left last year, and has now been (somewhat controversially) replaced by Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio.

Drake now sits at no. 2, followed by Maxwell‘s wonderful new album blackSUMMERS’night (which he will be showing off live in Australia next month), Beyoncé‘s Lemonade, Blurryface by Twenty One Pilots and Anti by Rihanna.

Congratulations for the massive comeback Blink 182! It’s also nice to know that the band themselves have realised how strange the times are:
