The Grammy Awards are just around the corner on February 12, and music’s night of nights is shaping up to be quite special. Not only do we have it on good authority that Kanye West, Justin Bieber and Drake will not be attending, but we now know that musical performances will include A Tribe Called Quest, with a little help from both 15-time Grammy winner Dave Grohl and two-time nominee Anderson Paak. The supergroup of sorts will deliver the cut Movin’ Backwards live at the ceremony this month, which also featured Anderson Paak on the album.

Tribe triumphantly returned last year with the spectacular We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, which not only honoured the late Phife Dawg, who passed away last March, but reflected the times on an unprecedented musical and lyrical level.

Other performers include Daft Punk with The Weeknd, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, Adele, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood and Rihanna. Furthermore, it’s rumoured that a star-studded Prince tribute will be performed, and while this is unconfirmed, it is extremely likely considering it’s the first Grammys since The Purple One passed last April.

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 12 (Monday February 13 Australia time), hosted by James Corden.

A group of Ethiopian school children have sung Nirvana’s classic Smells Like Teen Spirit for rock super-dad Dave Grohl’s birthday.

In one of the most heartwarming birthday surprises you’re sure to ever see, Matt Westerberg of American non-profit organisation Peace Corps taught the legendary anthem to his students as part of their English class.

Speaking in September to Alternative Nation after pulling a similar trick with Pearl Jam’s Even Flow, Westerberg said that, “I thought it would be funny to have the kids try to learn it.”

He noted how much the kids had enjoyed it, and the next day they had “demanded to try it again.”

“After a while we went through most of the song day by day as a motivational tool. At first it was all just a joke, but… the students began to really build confidence through learning the song.”

Now for the second time, Westerberg has given his students some serious inter web airtime in commemoration of the nicest guy in rock’s birthday.

Dave Grohl will turn the ripe old age of 47 on Saturday, and is sure to have another big year in his sights after casually appearing on The Muppets and completing a stadium tour with a broken leg in the last few months of his latest year on earth.

Dave Grohl is a man who truly leaves no stone unturned. 2015 alone has seen Grohl stick it to the Westboro Baptist Church, rebuke bands who play ”little two hour shows”, and, in a true rock ‘n roll style, complete a concert after the minor problem of a broken leg.

However, the Foo Fighters front-man is about to face what is sure to be the biggest challenge of his career, appearing on The Muppets for a drum off with the one and only Animal – arguably the greatest non-human drummer on Earth.

It’s not Grohl’s first outing in Jim Henson’s magical world, having appeared in the 2011 feature film as spin off character ‘Animool.’

Grohl will appear alongside celebrity Joseph Gordon Levitt, who will find himself involved in a poker night with Pepe, Scooter and The Cool Gang.

Meanwhile, Grohl will be forced to put all his skills from his Nirvana, Tenacious D, Queens of the Stone Age, Probot and Them Crooked Vultures days to the test as he goes face to face with one of the most iconic drummers of the 20th century.

Could this potentially be the end of Animals long stay at the top? Will we get any clues to the mysterious countdown of the Foo Fighters website? Will we see the Foo Fighters offer up a Muppet themed music video like we had from Tame Impala earlier this year? All things remain to be seen.

 

Foo Fighters are known for playing for up to three hours at various gigs, finishing with the same high energy enthusiasm as they started. As the lead singer, Dave Grohl is very proud of this. He was sure to let their fans know during a gig at Calgary, tearing apart the bands who don’t play as long in their own “two-hour concerts.”

“You don’t want one of those little hour and a half long shows do you?” Grohl said, as he pumps up the large crowd. He claims they “don’t want that shit.”

“All of those new bands that play those little two-hour concerts, you don’t want that shit. Two hours and 15, I don’t think is enough. Two and a half hours, does that sound okay? That’s not enough is it? Here’s our fucking problem. We’ve been a band for 20 fucking years, we have a lot of fucking songs, and then add my big mouth on top of that, and we’re going to be here all night.”

This isn’t the first of Grohl’s monologues between songs that have proved to be more entertaining than your usual scripted crowd-pumping dribble. Last week he decided to rick-roll some Westboro Baptist Church protesters, who were gather outside before their concert in Kansas City. He explained further before playing an acoustic version of My Hero.

“Tonight, we were sitting backstage, and someone said: ‘Guess who is coming tonight?’ And I said, ‘Who?’ They said, ‘Them.’ I said, ‘Why?’ They said, ‘Cause.’ And I said, ‘Cool, let’s go out and fuckin’ hang out with them,” he recounted.

“So we didn’t have enough time to put together the big old show that we put on last time, so we figured, you know what, why don’t we just fucking rickroll their ass? Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”

“You can’t just sit there and do nothing; you got to go out and say what you want to say. So we did,” Grohl said as he began strumming the song’s intro. He dedicated the song to “the people who go out and speak their mind, to stand up for what they think is right”. 

 

Dave Grohl has made an epic return to the stage with his band, the Foo Fighters after his unfortunate leg breaking fall during a Swedish concert last month.

The front man performed from a giant light up Game of Thrones-esque throne that replaced swords with guitars and cruel boy kings with rock royalty. While he had to stay seated for most of the performance, this made it mostly okay.

We all like to see our Mum’s as much as possible when we are under the weather, and Grohl is no exception. He went as far as bringing her on stage while he performed “For the Cows:” a tribute to her life as an English teacher in Northern Virginia.

Foo Fighters’ frontman and final drummer of Nirvana, Dave Grohl had a sick feeling in his stomach when his wife found HBO’s airing of the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck. He couldn’t bear to watch the whole thing, lasting through 10 minutes of the middle of the film. He rolled over and went to sleep.

“All the footage of him as a child, I think that might make me sad,” he told The Washington Post. “And then the dark stuff at the end I think would bum me out.”

Even though he was interviewed, Grohl does not appear in the film’s final cut. The director of the film Brett Morgan said he “didn’t think [he] needed two people from Nirvana” and “was fine locking picture with Krist [Novoselic]”.

The death of Cobain has been seen as one of the most tragic in the history of music. Part of the 27 Club, Cobain’s suicide touched many in the music business, so it’s not surprise that it would be very hard for any of his loved ones to watch the film. The Melvins’ Buzz Osborne had a different reaction to the film, penning a fiery essay saying “90% of Montage of Heck is bullshit”.

While Cobain’s former partner Courtney Love supports this film, there is another documentary that she is not happy with. Soaked In Bleach accused Love of “orchestrating the death of her husband Kurt Cobain.”

Dave Grohl is a committed performer, and he isn’t just going to let something as unimportant as a broken leg stop him from doing just that.

The Foo Fighters frontman fell off the stage while performing during the Gothenburg leg of their tour. Two songs into the performance at Ullevi stadium, Grohl, apparently misjudging the distance he needed to jump onto a ramp, fell into the security pit.

“I think I just broke my leg,” announces Grohl in a fan video, ever cheerful despite the extraordinary amount of pain he must be in. “I think I really broke my leg!”

Despite his predicament, Grohl promises to return from hospital as quickly as he can. He then hands over the show to drummer Taylor Hawkins, who led band in Grohl’s absence while he was being carted off to hospital.

About an hour thereafter, Grohl returns to stage on a stretcher with a cast on his leg the assistance of two medics. He’s set down on a chair, before he proceeds to continue with the show for another two hours.

The injury has forced the band to cancel their June 14 appearance at the Pinkpop Festival (where this man managed to perform this astounding feat), as well as their show at the AFG Arena in St. Gallen, Switzerland on June 16th.

It was a move so unpopular that it earned festival organiser Emily Eavis death threats, but Dave Grohl has faith in Kanye West’s forthcoming performance at Glastonbury.

Despite 130 000 people signing a petition in protest against the rapper headlining the legendary festival, the Foo Fighters frontman has said that “there is nothing more punk rock” than West’s upcoming performance.

Grohl, who will also be headlining with the Foo Fighters, said to The Sun:

“I think maybe Kanye’s personality might be harder to swallow than his music. But these are the moments that make for great moments in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. You’ve got more attention on that Saturday night set from Kanye than maybe anything else.”

“Who knows what will happen? He could walk out there and have 100,000 people bottle him on stage or he could walk out there and show the world that nothing else matters except for that moment. And I’m sure that is what he will do.”

“To me, there is nothing more punk rock than having him stand on stage in front of 100,000 people after thousands of people petition for him to not be there.”

However, the variety of headlining acts is what Grohl loves most about Glastonbury. “One of the things I love about Glastonbury is the diversity in the line-up. There’s everyone from Florence and the Machine to Kanye West to Lionel Richie,” said the rocker.

Yeezy isn’t the first rapper to cop flak for his Glastonbury appearance. In 2008, Jay Z became the first major hip-hop act to headline at the festival, receiving criticism from Glastonbury veterans like Noel Gallagher. In retaliation, Jay Z opened with a cover of Oasis’ Wonderwall.

This year’s festival takes place June 24-28, so we all wait with bated breath to see how Yeezy will perform, with or without 100 000 bottles being hurled at him. Maybe he’ll bring his flamethrowers along to this show too?
