Donald Glover, or as he’s known in musical circles, Childish Gambinohas just announced that he will perform a string of shows in California in September. At these shows he will perform a selection of new music and give his fans what he calls a “full album experience.” The shows are set to be held in the iconic Joshua Tree National Park in Southeast California between the 2nd and 4th of September. The best part? On-site camping.

All of this information was released via a smartphone app, “PHAROS Earth,” which Glover tweeted the link to on Friday. When downloaded, it featured a countdown that looked something like this:

Source: HipHopDX

Source: HipHopDX

That countdown expired at 8 a.m. AEST today. At the time of writing, pre-sale tickets will only be available through the app; however, the app is presently only available to those in the US. This is some seemingly bad news for any of Gambino’s legion of fans outside of the States who might be itching to go. If you do live in America, you can download the app here.

The name of the app, “PHAROS Earth”, has also raised speculation. What does it mean?! Something to do with Egypt, or the Pyramids? Or is it more sci-fi grounded, with the app showing a Star Wars-esque space background. Something to do with aliens? Who knows?! Not me, but that won’t stop me wildly speculating!

This is the first full length release from Glover as Childish Gambino since 2013’s Since The Internet, which was utterly spectacular.

Ticket pre-sale for the shows will kick off from July 24th.

With the confirmation that a Chance The RapperChildish Gambino collaborative mixtape/album actually exists coming yesterday via a Reddit AMA, we here at Howl & Echoes have been thinking: what are some of our other dream collaborative mixtapes? I posed the question to some of the team here, and we all mulled it over. Would we go for big name artists, such as Kanye West and Jay-Z as seen on Watch The Throne, or would we prefer smaller named artists who might complement each others’ dynamics?

With that, on to the list:

Future and Desiigner

It’s now a well-worn fact that New York rapper Desiigner sounds like Future. They’re both experts at the Atlanta mumble-rap, where the lyrics dribble out, barely understandable, but somehow still catchy-as-hell. It’s got a really interesting effect on the flow of a track, and a whole album of it would undoubtedly be wonderfully relaxing. Desiigner would likely bring some more energy to the pairing, as Panda manages to marry eccentric backing vocals (BRRRRRRRRRRAH) with subdued mumbling. Also, I’m not going to lie, trying to guess who was rapping at a given time would be a hilarious game to play, and it would really confuse people the lyric-writers over at Genius.

Mixtape title: Two Of Us.

Eminem and Dr. Dre

Dr. Dre and Eminem have a long history together, with Eminem being Dre’s most successful prodigy, and one of the greatest rappers of all time. The two already have a pretty expansive catalogue of music recorded together. Like, seriously, it’s a lot. But one thing they haven’t done is release an album together. Sure, there have been features, but they aren’t really the same as a full on collab album. It’s unlikely that we’ll see anything like this, sadly, with Eminem having faded somewhat from mainstream rap focus, and Dre releasing his grand finale mid last year. But hey, we can hope can’t we?

Mixtape title: Guess Who’s Back (Again)

DOOMSTARKS (MF Doom and Ghostface Killah)

Okay so this fantasy is a little different, in that it’s already happening – or is it? Doomstarks is a long, long rumoured full collaborative project between MF Doom and Ghostface Killah, and it’s already evolved past being a dream. The latest rumours came last December, when they hinted at a February release. Sadly, that clearly didn’t happen, although we have been mercilessly teased with the odd single, namely Victory Lap and Lively Hood. Of course, that makes it extra annoying that we still don’t have a Doomstarks album, but we’ll keep the dream alive forever.

Mixtape title: Doomstarks. Finally.

Meek Mill and Drake

Meek Mill and Drake album would be amazing – what a way to either set their differences aside, or just go at each other in one joint record? Best of both worlds, right? As much as it would likely just be a collection of their diss tracks toward each other, new material would be much better. Even better would be if all the tracks were diss tracks in their own right, but all the disses were veiled, transforming a joke album into an exercise in passive-aggressiveness.

Mixtape title: Friends?

Kanye West and Pope Francis

Finally, this is my number one dream collaboration. Since Pope Francis released a prog-rock album last year, my prayers have been focussed on a Yeezy x Pope album. Not just because a main theme in a significant amount of Kanye’s music is his faith, but also because Yeezy rapping over a prog-rock track would be exactly the kind of thing that he would do. My only concern would be that Kanye would feel the Pope beneath him; after all, he has worked with God. But West’s last two albums have had a strong art feel to them (Yeezus more-so), and with TLOP‘s strong gospel ties, this seems like a logical progression to take.

Mixtape title: Most High.

Bonus: Kanye West and Nicki Minaj

Alternatively, a Nicki Minaj x Kanye West album would be phenomenal, not just because it would bring together two of the largest and arguably best names in rap in the last few years, but Monster. Imagine a ten-track album of tracks at the same level of Monster. The world would explode. It wouldn’t even need a title, just put their names on it and watch the money flow.

In what was supposed to be an intimate one-off performance in Newcastle’s Cambridge Hotel, actor-turned-rapper Childish Gambino was apparently booed off stage last night. After turning up with a large entourage, it is said that Gambino spent the first 40 minutes of the show idling behind turntables as his friends, and even fans performed on stage.

Performing what appeared to be his only headline show as part of his Australian visit for Listen Out festival, Gambino was reportedly shocked at the negative reaction from fans. Just hours before the Newcastle show, Gambino cancelled what was supposed to be a second sideshow, in Canberra, citing that “his busy touring schedule taking a toll”. Perhaps the two are related?

Although as stated by one commenter on the Cambridge Hotel’s Facebook page:

“This was meant to be a DJ set, blame the hotel for misguiding most fans.”

The performance has left many fans enraged, and we’ll have to follow the story more today to find out if this is a gaffe on the part of the hotel, or promoters, and whether they misrepresented what the show was supposed to be, or rather if the touring schedule has taken too much of a toll on Gambino and is to blame for the underwhelming performance.

It’s disappointing to see the Listen Out brand disappoint fans twice this week alone with sound issues marring Melbourne’s performances. Especially for a festival that sits at the high end of attracting touring hip hop artists.

But one thing is for sure, fans spend a lot of money on seeing their favourite artists, and especially for teenage music fans who get very little opportunity to see the musicians they love, and they have every right to be angry about receiving a performance that was less-than-advertised. While no statement has been released by the tour agent or promoters, it does seem that now there is a growing selection of people who actually enjoyed the show and are dismissing the previous reports of an entire audience filled with angry fans, but rather paints a group of the fans as rude and aggressive.

It’s hard to know who to believe, but weirdly, both sides of the argument have a point.

Look at the difference in how the shows were advertised for Sydney and Newcastle.

royalty

Clearly, the Newcastle poster would not make it seem as if it were to be a Royalty DJ set featuring Childish Gambino. Even now the anger is starting to be directed towards the tour promotors rather than the artist. And for those expecting a DJ set, they probably had a grand old time.

The Cambridge Hotel though maintains that the show was intended to be a Childish Gambino headlining performance and has stated that:

“We’re very disappointed,… Unfortunately we can’t control the artist, and on the night we said something but unfortunately nothing changed.”

This back and forth is sure to continue through the day, but here’s hoping some fans enjoyed the show and for what it’s worth, it does look like some were for 15 seconds or so here:

Way back when in 2012, Childish Gambino, a.k.a Donald Glover, collaborated with former Das Racist rapper Heems for a track called Tell Me, off his solo mixtape Wild Water Kingdom.

While a video wasn’t released at the time, it seems one has now resurfaced from the dark recesses of the internet to delight us with more Gambino-related goodness. The unofficial black-and-white video shows Glover and Heems rapping into the camera while engaging in some good old-fashioned hedonistic hotel fun.

Trayvon Martin’s name pops up while the camera moves manically between the two rappers in a motion-sickness inducing, yet slick, cut of the video.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzaIzFuzKMI&w=560&h=315]

The video originally surfaced via jointheorg, a video host on YouTube who’s by line reads, “THE ORGANIZATION® presents CHILDISH GAMBINO – “TELL ME” FT. HEEMS the exclusive unreleased music video.” It then states underneath that video is directed by a man known only as Max.

The mysterious description does nothing to reveal the true origins of the video, but in it Glover raps about having a broken foot, which he actually did break in 2012, so it can be assumed that the video was filmed around then.

Glover has previously collaborated with Heems on his track Womyn 2, from Heems’ 2012 mixtape Nehru Jackets. Glover is here in Australia currently for Listen Out, which is happening in major cities all round Australia.

Unfortunately his set in Melbourne was marred by sound issues, which resulted in some festival-goers simply leaving. Performing in Sydney on Saturday, let’s hope his set doesn’t have the same kind of technical issues the festival has experienced so far.

Actor turned rapper Donald Glover A.K.A Childish Gambino is a busy man. Juggling both acting roles, putting out new music, and touring internationally. But if any of it is weighing him down, you wouldn’t tell by his recent interview with Conan O’Brien on his late night show ‘Conan’. Except for the hockey-esque playoff beard, Gambino seems completely at ease with his double life as an actor starring in Ridley Scott’s The Martian, and musical performer set to headline Listen Out festival next week! There doesn’t appear to be a Bruce Willis/ Bruno situation developing just yet for the Atlanta born performer. Yet.

Whatever you think of Gambino’s music, you have to admit that as far as switching disciplines, Glover has been about as successful as you could imagine. A founding member of comedy troupe Derrick Comedy, Glover got his start writing for 30 Rock, before moving on to the role of the beloved Troy in NBC’s Community. All the while however, alter-ego Gambino was working on his music, preparing to make a splash on the hip hop world.

Gambino ruminates during the interview, discussing the horror of his mother that he would consider leaving a prosperous writing job to pursue a career in music, he notes “It was a bad decision, but I didn’t know it—so it worked out great!” Clearly though, the creative talents of Glover are insuppressible, having achieved great success in writing/stand-up/acting/music he is the ever-rare quadruple threat.

When pressed on the differences between stand-up and performing in concert, Glover quips, “It’s really bad when people know all the words to your jokes,” and continues to note that he’d once had a bar of soap thrown at him on stage at a Gambino show, and how he’d much prefer to deal with that at a music show than during a comedy performance. Charming as always, Glover once again displayed his appealing nervousness that endears him to people, and works so well with his clever lyrics and urgent cadence.

Donald Glover is certainly a man of many talents. First emerging as the hilarious Troy Barnes on the TV show Community, then a killer musician via Childish Gambino, he may already be a hero to many fans out there. But Glover is now able to solidify the position, as it has emerged he will voice the character of the web slinging superhero Spiderman in Disney’s new animated series “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.”

Glover will voice the character of newly created Miles Morales, a half-black, half-Hispanic Spiderman who exists in a different dimension to the original Peter Parker. The two meet as Peter Parker jumps dimensions to thwart the Green Goblin, and is introduced to a young Miles who is adjusting to his new role as Spiderman.

See an excerpt below:

Hip hop and comic books have a dense, fruitful relationship, and Glover has long had a history with Spiderman. When the new live action reboot was announced, a Twitter campaign erupted for Glover to play the new Spiderman, sparked by Glover wearing Spiderman pyjamas on the TV show Community. Although as we know, Andrew Garfield was ultimately decided to star in the reboot, the new comic Spiderman series was already being planned. The campaign inspired Marvel to create the new black Spiderman based on Glover, who has used his stand-up routines to share his passion for the friendly neighbourhood hero.

Glover has admitted it is a massive moment for him, as he too was a huge Spiderman fan from way back.

“I never liked Superman that much, because I was like, ‘Yo, this dude can’t die. It’s too easy.’ Batman is pretty fly. He’s a close second, just because he doesn’t really have powers. He’s just a justice-driven vigilante. Spider-Man is the best because you just don’t know who he is, and he’s funny and he’s poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He’s just trying to make it.”

He has even said that at his Childish Gambino concerts, fans of the new Spiderman have requested autographs on the Miles Morales comics.

However, he still holds out hope that one day he can play a live-action version of the role.

So do we Donald, so do we.

Quadruple threat Childish Gambino, a.k.a Donald Glover, has unveiled a new tune at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival in Tennessee.

Surrounded by flashing screens and lights, the shirtless rapper, writer, comedian and actor performed the six-minute track, which is full of groovy, mellow beats and riffs and a bit of crooning instead of rapping.

Could this track be part of the forthcoming new album? A series of tweets alluding to the possibility of five already recorded tracks were quickly deleted and Glover has also hinted his Childish Gambino alter-ego project might be coming to an end.

“I always want to do music, like I love music. I’m already putting out projects quietly everywhere and I want to produce,” he said while promoting his latest film, The Lazarus Effect. “I guess Childish Gambino is like a period in my art time, and I want to have periods in my life, so I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”

It would be the first album since his 2013 EP Because The Internet. Glover also released a new Childish Gambino mixtape called STN MTN in October 2014, which he called “a nice in-between for the next album”.

Watch the fan shot footage of the rapper performing his new track below:

Gambino will also be headlining Listen Out festival later this year, alongside Joey Bada$$, Ryan Hemsworth and more. Details here.

Comedy-actor-turned-rapper Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, is reportedly working on his new album. Over the course of a series of tweets, which have now  been deleted, we learnt a little about the forthcoming album. Volcalist Aaron Michael Gutierrez revealed that he was a part of 50 vocalists who were working on the album together. They’ll be featured on a total of five tracks on the new album.

As discovered by Reddit’s /r/hiphopheads, a number of other people involved on the day (presumably more of the 50 vocalists) tweeted out similar news. It’s all since been deleted -most likely a little quick damage control from the Gambino camp. Some quick-clicking folks managed to grab a couple screenshots, though.

It’s been around two years since Childish Gambino’s Grammy-nominated Because The Internet came out, a follow-up to the brilliant 2011 debut Camp. He released a combines mixtape/EP STN MTN/Kauai last year, and now we’re pretty keen to hear new tunes.

While we sometimes see more of Childish Gambino singing than rapping, here’s hoping he’ll flex his lyrical muscles more on the next release. Check out this epic clip of him freestyling live at Peakness Festival last month:

It’s only been three short months and we’ve already seen some phenomenal new music this year. This post is not dedicated to the tunes however, but to the video clips that go with them. Some of them have been chosen for their content, others because they are technically stunning, and some because they are simply hilarious.

1. Childish Gambino: Sober

At the end of last year Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) wiped all of his social media accounts. He made no explanation. On January 7 he broke his online silence with a link to a website that contained a countdown clock. When the clock struck zero, the timer revealed the new music video for Sober.

Speculation has led to a lot of different theories for the meaning of the clip, which portrays a zombie-like, Michael Jackson-esque Gambino attempting to woo a lady in a diner with dance moves and magic tricks. Perhaps the film is a comment on online racism, and the white privilege that Gambino still sees as prevalent on social media platforms. Or perhaps he is mocking the public perception that he had gone slightly mad, because of his online behaviour, by presenting himself as high in the film clip. Whatever your take on it, there is an undeniable darkness to the video that makes it truly engaging to watch.

2. FKA Twigs: Pendulum

FKA Twigs had already released some epic music videos in 2014, but this is one of her most exciting films so far. The clip starts with an extreme closeup of Twig’s lips and gradually moves backwards, twisting slightly to reveal that the singer is in fact being suspended by her hair.

The film is incredibly engaging to watch, and gives the song, which on its own is a little bit of a yawn, a sense of purpose and anticipation. The only criticism I have for it is the slight bondage theme that it carries. FKA Twigs is a beautiful, powerful female icon. She doesn’t need to rely on her sexuality to engage her fans. Here the shots with her wrapped up tightly in black ropes, with her breasts pushed up towards the camera seemed more like a bizarre distraction than a necessary part of the film.

3. Grimes: RealiTi

Grimes’ new video clip for RealiTi, which she directed and edited herself stands in complete contrast with Twigs. The film uses a gorgeous colour scheme of oranges, pinks and blues, and has an amateur, almost childish nostalgia to it.

Also in contrast to Twigs, Grimes in no way sexualises or objectifies herself. She dances with a mesmerising youthfulness, giving the sense that she would dance in exactly the same way if the camera was not there. Female artists that are brave enough to make music videos that don’t draw attention to their sexuality are so important, as they give the young girls who watch them permission to act the same. Grimes and artists like her should be celebrated.

4. Rihanna, Kanye West, Paul McCartneyFourFiveSeconds

Rihanna’s FourFiveSeconds may be one of the more random songs that she’s produced in her career, but that hasn’t stopped her from releasing a hilariously awesome music video to go with it.

The director of FourFiveSeconds, Vinoodh Matadin, made the intelligent decision to keep the clip stripped back and simple. Opening with a black and white closeup of a glistening, tormented RiRi, the film hooks you in an instant. We’re thinking why does RiRi look like she has a drug addiction? Moreover, why is she decked out head-to-toe in denim?

The film is a surprisingly appealing hot mess, somewhat like the song. You may think it’s tacky, but try to get through the entire song without singing along to the chorus. It’s not easy.

5. SiaElastic Heart

If you haven’t already seen Sia’s film clip for Elastic Heart, you’ve been living under a rock. The music video sparked an enormous amount of controversy over whether it should be considered paedophilia, which you can read about here. We need not get into that discussion again, so lets just suffice to say that it should not.

It’s a shame though that such a futile argument took the attention away from what is a truly interesting film clip. The film features retired actor Shia Labouef, and the 12 year-old female dancer from Sia’s previous clip, Chandelier, Maddie Ziegler.

The two characters challenge traditional gender roles and the sense of imprisonment that people feel when they aren’t able to express themselves. That’s what we should have been talking about. Not whether Shia Laboeuf is a bloody paedophile.

Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino is many things – rapper, writer, actor, producer, comedian, singer, producer, handsome – and nowhere is his quite frankly annoying overacheiving nature more entertaining than in his music videos. Glover has a history of weird and wonderful videos, with 2014’s Telegraph Ave basically just laughing in the face of cinematic music video tropes with a twist ending that will blow your mind, and Clapping for the Wrong Reasons a twenty five minute mind fuck that if you figure out, let me know. I love Glover’s performance persona, and the brutal vulnerability that counters his on-stage bravado, but when I watched Sober, one of my top ten songs for the year from his 2014 mixtape/album Kauai, I was so happy to see Glover just really being funny again.

glover

The clip features a not-quite-sober Glover drunkenly hitting on a girl in a diner, with Glover’s slapstick physicality countered by some rather amazing moves on the tables. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be an ode to “how funny is it when a drunk guy aggressively hits on you and makes you super uncomfortable”, but to me the ending makes it right.

What do you think?
