Boss Moxi are one of the best Brisbane bands of the past few years, and they’re heading on tour tomorrow – for the very last time.
A few months ago the band announced that they’ve decided to go their separate ways – but not before the release of their debut album, which they successfully crowdfunded on Indiegogo. To celebrate the release, they’re taking the show on the road in one final celebration for the excellent musicians.
The tour kicks off in Melbourne tomorrow, and we’re very excited to announce that we’re giving away a prize pack for each and every show. One lucky winner in each city will score a double pass to the show, a t-shirt and a hard copy CD!
The dates are as follows:
Sun 12th April: The Workers Club, Melbourne (NB: This is an afternoon show kicking off at 1 pm)
Wed 15th April: Frankie’s Pizza, Sydney
Sat 18th April: Sol Bar, Maroochydore
Entering is super easy:
1. Like Howl & Echoes on Facebook
2. Email giveaways@howlandechoes.com with BOSS MOXI and SYD/MELB/MAROOCHYDORE in the subject line, and your name in the email.
Deadline for Melbourne entries is Sunday at 11 am, and deadline for Sydney and Maroochydoore are on Wed April 15 at 3 pm.
You must be 18 to enter
See you there!
Brisbane band Boss Moxi have become staples in their local scene. They’ve been playing shows for years, and it was with a heavy heart that I went along to see their final show at The Zoo after a tremendous performance at boutique festival Jungle Love last year. It was here the band expressed the desire to fully realise their dream of recording their debut album, although members were going their separate ways.
It was this dream, this passion and ambition that led to the band pulling together and launching an Indiegogo campaign to fund the final stage of their album. It was actually going to happen! After recording at drummer Sophie’s house in the hills of Maleny two years ago, those recordings were finally going to be made into an album. Raising a total of $5675, this dream of theirs and their fans is now a reality. Oddball is to be released April 17. Isn’t it amazing what team work can achieve? Their fans’ loyalty was finally going to be treated to the album we all wanted, but weren’t entirely sure it would happen. *emoji happy crying face*
The good news doesn’t stop there, though. We at Howl & Echoes are over the moon to announce that Boss Moxi will be hitting the road one final time, and we’ll be jumping on board as co-presenters. I’ve been such a fan of this band for a while now, so my aforementioned heart is not quite as heavy anymore upon receiving this fantastic news.
Sydney, Melbourne and The Sunshine Coast are in for a treat, as the band will travel to each city to deliver their infamous electrifying live show. This will be the last time you can catch their huge 2014 singles Song of Joan or Nymphomaniac or even 2012’s Caught Up In Neverland live, so if there is one ticket you buy for April – nay, this year – make it this one!
Wassup people! Here’s your new weekly playlist, curated by your faithful editor. Got a pretty eclectic selection today. We start with the raunchy sounds of Boss Moxi, before fuzzing it up and washing it down with Crepes and Kagu. From there we travel into weird-electro-land, where my picks this week are all about the hidden layers, subtle delights and subdued power. Topping it all off is a couple wicked hip hop tracks to finish it off. Enjoy!
- Boss Moxi, Nymphomaniac
I can’t get enough of this Brisbane group right now. Their haunting tones lie somewhere in between Nick Cave and Kirin J Callinan, with an indie beat and eerie guitars leading the way. - Kagu, Shadow of the Wind
A really gorgeous track from former-Snakadaktal man Sean Heathcliff. Sentimental and deliberate, the rhythm slowly builds and drops and changes behind the melody, really captivating you through each moment. - Crepes, Ain’t Horrible
The Melbourne act have released a new single that lies somewhere between lo-fi fuzz and summery bliss. Delayed beats and understated vocals, there’s a lot more than meets the eye to this one. - EMRSN, About Love
I can’t get enough of this sound! An absolutely gorgeous future soul track, EMRSN has found the absolute perfect balance between delicately glitch electronic beats, and velvety rich, sensual vocals. - Sizarr, Baggage Man
The swinging rhythm, the melodic bass and the swift rhythm lead the way on this one, while the vocals are warm, husky and seductive. I don’t like the bridge that much, but the rest of the track more than makes up for it. - Spirit Faces, Cloudplay ft. Buoy
This is an utterly strange, utterly beautiful tune. Angelic melodies and lullaby xylophones, grungey guitar crunches and a whole myriad intermittent synth layers makes for something wholly unique. - TOKiMONSTA + Iza, Pinching
A heavenly lilt with perfect harmonies really lead the fairly simple synth and beat layers. There’s a lot of cute little additions throughout, and all in all it’s another track where you gotta look a little closer to find the magic! - Marian Hill, Lips
This is a funky electro-pop track with cheeky vocals and a rhythm that starts simple, but slowly builds into something really catchy. I really like the thinness of Hill’s voice – it’s not often that you find something so fine, yet so strong. - Lil Herb & Earl Sweatshirt, Knucklehead
I love rap collabs where they just trade gritty verses, and this is exactly that. The basic loops leave loads of room for those raspy raps. Both rappers have seriously wicked tongues and they flow so fluidly together. - Danny Brown & Action Bronson, Bad News
This one’s off the EPIC upcoming GTA V soundtrack. It’s an interesting collaboration, but it works. They really feed off one another, surrounded by eerie loops, evil lyrics and clanky beats. It’s dark and demented, so obviously I like it.
As boutique festivals become more and more of a thing, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Jungle Love proved just that. With a limited capacity, carefully curated lineup, good vibe guarantee and a picturesque location, this was one weekend I will remember forever – what I can remember anyway, thanks to that BYO policy! Special mention to creators Raymond Williams and Lincoln Savage for what was a truly remarkable experience.
It’s alright me saying that, but what about the others? We were lucky enough to rope legendary Brisbane psych outfit Boss Moxi into taking a few snaps for us, to see the festival through someone else’s (or five someone else’s) eyes. The band braved the searing heat of Saturday afternoon to deliver a blistering set of jazz-infused-psych rock. If you haven’t heard them yet, I suggest you change that with this.
We gave them a disposable camera, they gave us another insight into what was just about a perfect weekend. See for yourselves!
Brisbane jazz-infused-psych-rock outfit BOSS MOXI are calling it a day… For now. However, that hasn’t stopped them from releasing their unique blended sounds until the bitter end. That’s right, their last gig for an “indefinite amount of time” is tonight, but their latest single is released tomorrow! So, although you might not be able to SEE the band, you will still be able to hear new material being released from the depths of their seemingly endless pool of talent.
Nymphomaniac is their latest release. The short track is a bit dark, a bit mysterious, and features a growl, a la Nick Cave/Gareth Liddard or even Kirin J Callinan, that I just can’t get enough of. It’s also a deviation from their last track, Song of Joan – not that that’s a bad thing. Quite the opposite actually, as both tracks show the band in a different, more mature and pretty fascinating light.
It is a shame they’re hanging their hats up for the time being; I feel like they are onto something really good here. However, I commend them on their choice of send off – Brisbane fans can get down to The Zoo TONIGHT to say “see ya later”, as well as seeing other Brizzo faves Shady Bliss, Salvadarlings, and Twin Haus! Hear Nymphomaniac below (also peep the stunning cover art)!
