You know when two pillars of Australian hip-hop get together on tour, surrounded by a bunch of their talented friends, you’re in for an unforgettable ride. That’s exactly the kind of ride we embarked on when REMI and Sampa The Great burned through Sydney on their Fire Sign tour.
This latest project is named after the new tune from Sensible J, Remi Kolawole and Sampa The Great, which was released earlier in June and is the follow up to another REMI/Sampa collab For Good; one of the tracks from REMI’s 2016 album Divas and Demons.
Last year also saw Sampa The Great headline nationally with her HERoes tour which was spectacular in itself. Get these two together and you’re in for one hell of an explosive time. First up was local MC B-Wise to set the vibe with some true blue finesse. He let it be known that this tour was all about family and bringing people together; a sentiment that was repeated later by Remi and Sampa. Warming up, he had everyone introduce themselves to a stranger standing nearby, after which we were well and truly off to a banging start.
On the Friday night, the Oxford Art Factory was packed to the rafters and the energy that was flying around even before Remi and Sampa took to the stage was purely electric. The two took turns in switching time slots each night and this evening we copped Remi and Sensible J up first. These two know how to throw the crowd into a groove. Remi rocks a type of flow that is largely unmatched amongst his Aussie counterparts. He’s been collaborating with Sensible J for 6-some-odd years now, who keeps a hefty beat on the drums; however, the full breadth of his production skills come full circle on both of their albums, as well as the tour’s title track.
Sampa took the stage not long after and absolutely tore it down – we wouldn’t expect anything less of this queen. Her highly acclaimed debut album The Great Mixtape led to support slots for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat and Hiatus Kaiyote and a bunch of festival headline spots. Favourite moment was when she paid tribute to her idol Lauryn Hill with a slamming rendition of Fu-gee La.
Following their respective sets, they stormed the stage for a joint collab. Together, Remi and Sampa have an effortless flow back and forth. They have collaborated frequently in the past and we don’t see this sacred bond tiring any time soon.

For the past couple years we’ve documented Sydney’s Secret Garden as our favourite small camping festival in the country. With just a couple weeks until the 2017 edition, we’re counting down the days with baited breath.
A lot of what makes this festival so fun is the atmosphere – the small-ish crowd who, for the most part, are one of the most laid back, tolerant and dickhead-free in the country; the magical mystery feel of it all, with decorated bushland, hidden stages and quirky activities; the dress-up theme which absolutely everyone indulges in (Royal Rave this year, in case you’re wondering), and the overall feel-good vibes generally do just make it a great weekend for all involved. But it’s also a music festival, and there’s a tonne of great Australian acts on offer across all genres. One thing I love is that even the biggest stage is pretty small compared to your average multi-day festival, so you get a much more intimate experience than the norm.
The lineup has been curated to feature some of the country’s favourite live performers, and here’s our picks for must-see sets at Secret Garden 2017.
B Wise
B Wise was our favourite new local rapper to emerge last year. Not only did he release his critically acclaimed debut EP Semi-Pro, he showed us his prowess as a live performer, with support slots for artists including Vince Staples, ScHoolboy Q and Freddie Gibbs. Each time we seem him live, we’re blown away by his energy, positivity and confidence – don’t miss it, we doubt he’ll be playing on small stages for much longer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50j4P1cn8bg
The Cactus Channel
You may not be super familiar with The Cactus Channel, but that’s likely going to change pretty soon. Having already turned heads in the industry, nabbing collaborations with Chet Faker Nick Murphy and Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music, with whom they will be releasing a full collaborative EP later this year, their unique production, brassy rhythms and soulful, layered melodies will undoubtedly make for one of the most fun sets at Secret Garden – and who knows, maybe they’ll even bring a special guest or two.
Total Giovanni
If you’ve ever caught the on-stage party that is a Total Giovanni live set, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. The festival favourites bring the funk, the beats, the volume and a serious load of dancing. With matching outfits, an incredible stage presence and the obvious, immediate feeling that the band are having a tonne of fun on stage, it’s impossible to not get swept away into a musical frenzy when these guys are on stage.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnvooAATzbs
Urthboy
Hip-hop veteran Urthboy has long been known as one of the most dynamic and exciting live artist on the scene for years. He’s been around for longer than most, but his music and on-stage presence is as intense and energetic as ever, with a vitality unmatched by many of his younger peers. Having just released a killer new single, Urthboy is gearing up for a national tour in March, right after Secret Garden. As one of the only live hip-hop acts on this year’s bill, we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
Donny Benet
Donny Benet has been a constant force in the quirkier, more eclectic side of things in the Sydney scene for years. First coming to attention with Jack Ladder and the Dreamlanders, he signed to Plastic World last year, and has since been showcasing his more funky, retro, bass-driven electronic side through remixes, festivals and other live dates. Get down to his set and get ready to sweat.
Tickets are sold out, but you can find more info, including the full lineup at Secret Garden’s official website. Check out a festival playlist below for more music!

November can mean one of two things for the music community. 1) It’s only a month until Christmas, a phenomenon which will cause Michael Buble to emerge from his hovel to terrorise shopping centre playlists once again, and 2) it’s Aus Music Month, which not only means that there’s a stack of new local music out each week, but that we get to reflect on the very best of it.
We’ve put together a playlist compiling some of the best new music of the month so far. Enjoy!
Hollow Coves, Coastline
Brisbane based Hollow Coves wind things back to a time of simple beauty and peace with their atmospheric, uplifting folk. Similar to the floatiness of Dustin Tebbutt or early Georgia Fair, Coastline proclaims intentions of “moving away” to a place of sun, laughter, and happiness. Not one to listen to when the feels of 3:30 roll around in the workplace, but perfect for the excitement and beauty of an adventure.
San Mei, Rewind
The alt-rock songstress first rose to our attention with the grainy Revel, and the synth-driven Rewind shows that this new young-gun has no intentions of slowing down. A driving dance beat kicks things off with an ambient, dark riff before opening up into a sweeping half-time chorus. A dynamic, exciting tune from a singer yet to release her first EP.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wKLksJNB2U
Kllo, Walls To Build (Mall Grab Remix)
A soulful, moody re-work of Kllo’s wonderful original, the upcoming Mall Grab playfully mixes up the tempo and vocal delivery of the original cut, adding a bluesy keys line above the vocals, accompanied by a bass line straight out of an acid-jazz club. The remixtakes the bouncy feeling of the original and crafts it into something darker and more reflective. Perfect for the late-night playlist.
Holy Holy, Elevator
The band’s 2015 debut When The Storms Would Come was one of the most mature, well-crafted releases of the year. If new single Elevator is anything to go by, it sounds like the band is backing it up with another sensational release. The track slowly ascends to the heavens with a joyous guitar solo erupting out of the chorus, providing the song with the fuel needed to shoot onwards to a triumphant finish. Paint, the band’s new album, is set for release February 24, and the band is currently in the middle of a huge national tour.
Sa. May, Booty Calls feat. B Wise
Hailing from the Northern Beaches, the electronic producer/singer experiments with the world of reggae and hip-hop with this moody new release. A strong feature from B Wise gives the song a much-needed boost in the verse, and the melody of the chorus is infectious. A successful blend of styles from the young musician.

The Jensens, Everybody Talks
The simplicity of good alt-rock will always have a special place in my heart, and this newest cut from The Jensens ticks all the boxes. It has a fun melody, a catchy chorus, a mysterious bridge and most importantly, isn’t too hard to follow. A summer festival-ready tune for sure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugSbVCLmJiY
ESESE, SVGAR
From the opening hits of the kick drum, it’s clear that this one isn’t gonna suit a DF with more than 2 people on it. The sensual track has a seriously strong Anderson .Paak vibe to it, and that’s no bad thing. The horns in the second verse turn up the heat on the track, and all it needs is a stronger beat to kick in. Unfortunately, this doesn’t eventuate, but a strong song is still a strong song.
Holly Throsby, What Do You Say
It’s been five long years since we’ve heard any new music from Holly Throsby, but thankfully half a decade of silence hasn’t dampened the creative flair of this songstress. What Do You Say is a beautiful duet with Mark Kozelek, touching on the themes of reconciliation and the effect of time on a relationship. The song itself is based around a simple acoustic riff which swells with the lyrics but never spills over, with the calm dynamic providing the perfect backdrop to the heartbreaking lyrics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi3KAa-xC7c
Alex The Astronaut, Already Home
Former Sydneysider turned New Yorker Alex The Astronaut returns to the airwaves with this laid back, reflective song. The song reminisces on the unchangeable aspect of life, with the singer lamenting the fact that there are “Billionaires for presidents and parking fines at hospitals,” whilst noting in a bemused tone that “kids in their school uniforms get off at the same time as me, I offer them my good luck…hope they’re happy when they are sleepy.” Sometimes life is just strange, and this song captures it perfectly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHrmwEGskJY
Isabel, Stay
2016 has seen a resurrection of neo-soul of sorts, and Australia is placing itself right in the mix. This cut from Brisbane songstress Isabel fuses some more electronic elements with the genre, and the result is a unique and exciting song that somehow grooves yet tenderly floats all at once. Exciting things coming up for this new singer.

Three of the best names in Australian hip-hop, Horrorshow, B Wise and Omar Musa, have been tearing stages apart across the country, delivering incredible performances throughout, and even recording music and live videos together along the way. Each artist has been flaunting their new material for their audiences, including Horrorshow’s newest single If You Know What I Mean, B Wise’s debut EP Semi Pro, and Omar Musa’s recently released Dead Centre EP.
We caught all three acts live in Brisbane at The Zoo.

By now hopefully you’ve heard of Sydney MC, B Wise. For an upcoming rapper who had no EPs to his name prior to his recently released debut Semi Pro, he sure developed a large following and lived up to the outstanding hype. In order to get that EP out, Wise took a break from touring and doing live shows, signed to Elefant Traks and got straight to work recording.
“It’s been great to finally find a home that I can put out my music and be with a group of people who also understand the vision,” Wise said. “Everyone has been quite hospitable and so I’m really enjoying the short amount of time that I’ve been there.”
To some, the fact Wise hadn’t put out an EP or album yet was a confusing idea. Fans had been seeing Wise’s name popping up on different bills for at least a year. He rocked stages at Listen Out Sydney as the Triple J Unearthed Winner, The Plot, Newtown Festival, BigSound, as well as warming up the crowd for Tuka (Thundamentals), Yelawolf, Vince Staples and Freddie Gibbs.
“In 2015 I pretty much completed a full album but it just wasn’t cohesive enough or the right time for me to put out an album, so that’s why we kinda just put out songs on their own just to keep the momentum and sort of also introduce myself and get people’s attention and that also included going on the road. Then when I thought I had a good enough platform then I would put out an EP. I’ve got to give credit to my manager Alexander Franco and my booking agent Niche Productions. They did what they can to get me out on the road as much as possible while I was still working on music. When those opportunities came, I took full advantage of them and tried to spread my reputation as a performer and build fans and come back and then put out some music.”
With Semi Pro already smashing it, and a full album is ‘pretty much complete’, fans who have heard Semi Pro will undoubtedly be chomping at the bit for more, but what can we expect?
“Nah the old things are going to stay old things,” B Wise says. “I mean we are working right now on new music and I’m just going to keep it ahead. You can anticipate an album so that’s what I’m working on now and a bunch of stuff on the sides. I just wanna keep working on new music. I just want to keep creating new and fresh material because I’m still learning a lot as well in the recording process, so I still want to keep going and building.”
Semi Pro was finally released last week to exceptional praise. B Wise has proved one of the driving forces of the new and diverse wave of Australian MCs. The EP reads like a big introduction into who B Wise is, and what he has gone through to get to this point in his life.
“The track selection was totally deliberate. I did it that way because of the first song No Questions. It’s a quick recap or a crash course basically into who I am and what got me to this point and what I’ve been through up to this point. No Questions is overall about having no regrets because I’ve been doing music a while now. I’ve been through a lot, you know personally and also in music. It’s a song I needed to get off my chest and I have no regrets about anything and what I’ve done to this point has got me here. Then I move on through, and we go to Smile, which is a song about being optimistic and optimism. And then Risk It is a bit more of a fun song, which is the current single. And then you got Drugs & Drama, which is my favourite song man. And we end with Roll Call, which is where I hope that they pass the baton because I have an intention to be here for a while.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRgj09YNOl8
B Wise’s favourite song Drugs & Drama, is also probably one of the best songs on Semi Pro. Lyrically it delves into the pressure of having to be thought of as cool and how it’s more of an obstacle than a path.
“Being introduced to a new environment, doing music, there’s a lot going on. What you would see as a fan of music, you know in the video clips and the lifestyle and you think, ‘oh it’s so cool and everything.’ But then you know if you’re in it you can kinda get overwhelmed and sucked up in it. And you need people who are grounded to remind you there is a reason you’re here, there is this reason to do music, it’s not to get sucked up in the lifestyle, which is the pros and cons of being a musician, so that came from a real place.”
“I know a lot of musicians who relate to it as well and when they hear it and they say ‘yeah, I get what your saying.’ So that song is just a plea and a call out to say what I see at the moment.”
For someone like B Wise it must have been hard work to stay grounded with so many fans and industry peers building hype behind the young MC.
“I don’t let it get to me. Those comments and praise, it’s humbling to hear that, but I still feel that I have a lot to do. I think if I was in such a good position you would be seeing my name a lot more on bills and festivals and that, so I know I have a lot more to do. I try not to go on the net too much as well so I’m not checking every single comment, not because I want to ignore that, it’s because I don’t want to gas myself up too much. I want to feel like I still have a lot to do you know.”
“My team, and particularly my manager, helped me to remain quite humble and my head on the task as well. Because I’ve got a lot of work to do and a lot to prove man. But to know that there is something bubbling, that’s amazing. I know personally where I am at right now, so I don’t let it get to me.”
https://soundcloud.com/ugottabwise/riskit
B Wise has also stated that one of his biggest influences is Tupac. Apart from Pac’s rebellious side, he was grounded and he was focused and above all he wanted to make a change and there is a lot of that to be found in B Wise.
“He’s one of my biggest influences in life bro, full stop. I grew up to him. A lot of young coloured males or ethnic males or even a lot of Anglo-Saxon people can relate to him so much as well. But particularly young African or black males tend to look at him as a second dad figure or something because he just represents so much and says so much that we go through. When I was young listening to him was just like thinking preach on type. And then you know a man like that got cut down in his prime, he didn’t get to finish what he was doing and what he was trying to do. I take some of the good things from him in the scene of just trying to speak your heart and keep it authentic as possible.”
With Semi Pro out, B Wise is ready to start touring and playing live again. Next month he will hit the road with fellow Sydney duo Horrorshow.”
“Looking forward to that. That’s going to take the next month or so. Then November I’m going to come back and get pretty busy again with recording. Then December, I want to do my own headline show in Sydney to close out the year. Short time until the end of the year.”
It should be an exciting tour, as Horrorshow will be fresh out on the road again after also having taken some time off touring.
“We are really looking forward to it, we haven’t been out on the road for a while now, so we are keen to get back into it,” Adit from Horrowshow said.
“Urthboy sent us an advance copy of the Semi Pro EP and we listened to it and we really loved it. I mean we were feeling tracks that Wise has dropped before as well,” Adit continued, “and with the EP coming out and us being label fam, it just sort of made sense [to bring B Wise on the tour].”
For those lucky enough to have tickets to their almost sold out tour, you might even get to experience some new collab music from B Wise and Horrorshow.
“We will be doing some music together on the tour. It would be a waste not to take advantage of that.”

Australia’s hip-hop scene is growing and growing each week, and among the new wave of dope MCs stands Sydney’s B Wise. B Wise has been gaining attention and hype after he won Triple J’s Unearthed Listen Out spot in 2015. Now signed to Elefant Traks, nothing is going to stop B Wise from quickly becoming one of Australia’s best (and best loved) MCs.
I first heard B Wise in March this year when he opened for Freddie Gibbs. I remember arriving late and not actually knowing who it was up on stage – I’m not sure others in the crowd knew either. His style and attitude were vastly different from Gibbs’, but that didn’t matter, the crowd was really feeling it. “We be on that, real, real, real shit,” the crowd chanted as B Wise performed Lately.
B Wise’s debut EP, Semi Pro was produced by Dopamine, and reads like a story of the rapper’s life. No Questions is a look at where he came from, while Smile is about keeping a positive head. Risk It All is more of a party track about putting it all on the line, while Drugs & Drama is a song about the temptation to party and not focus on music. Roll Call is about making it to this point: his stellar debut EP and a national tour with Horrorshow.
The opening track and first single, No Questions, is an introspective look into B Wise’s upbringing. In the first half of the track, he directs his lyrics towards his parents, rapping over a slow piano. As his life starts to get more intense, the beat follows. He switches from discussing his upbringing to music, thanking those that brought him this far, and recognising the love that’s out there for him: “Coming from the underground, now you goin’ see me around, know that your boy goin’ be holding it down, these critics and blogs they in love with the sound.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRgj09YNOl8
And he’s right – No Questions is one of the freshest tracks on the EP, and of this year. I fricken love the production and the diversity that B Wise shows as a rapper right off the bat. His lyrics are clever enough to go over that piano, and ruthless enough to be spat at high velocities without pause.
In the next track, Smile, B Wise delves into the pressures and stresses of being an emerging artist: “Why the hell I feel so down, when everyone around me say we gone be on next/ because your phone bill is still overdue, and your landlord is still chasing you/ with more money going out than coming in, why your chasing a dream, what would you do?” But the song isn’t a down-on-my-luck type jam, it’s a track about smiling through the bullshit and coming out a better man.
Drugs & Drama is probably my favourite on Semi Pro. B Wise looks at the temptations and obstacles that present themselves to an artist on the way up. “Drugs, women, and drama, it’s all apart of the come up/ I just wanna make music, why we so far from it?” This is not a track you normally hear in the hip-hop genre, where most artists tend to brag about their drug use and womanising. “Glorifying money, women and the weed, it’s all a young ***** really need, and that was the saying, engraved on my brain, subconsciously carry that attitude to this day.” It’s a refreshing outlook from someone in the newest generation of rappers, to see them advocating for the genre to move on from its misogynistic, drug glorifying ways. It’s amazing to see young MCs just being themselves and not being afraid to call out the whole genre for dictating ‘how to be cool’.
“What you would see as a fan of music in the video clips and the lifestyle, you think, ‘oh it’s so cool’ and everything. But then you know if you’re in it you can kinda get overwhelmed and sucked up in it,” B Wise said to me in a recent interview. “You need people who are grounded to remind you that there is reason you do music.”
The last track on Semi Pro is the bright, layered Roll Call. B Wise holds nothing back lyrically, showing a level of dexterity and maturity in his rhymes of a rapper with years of experience under his belt. B Wise hits the bars so hard that when he proclaims, “I can’t wait to get on, someone pass me the baton,” you almost feel like putting a wanted ad in the classifieds (wanted: 3rd leg rapper to pass the baton to B Wise The Anchor). He sums up by rapping: “This is just the beginning of where we going.”
“I hope that they pass the baton because I have an intention to be here for a while,” B Wise said.
The final track closes the EP with thank yous and shout outs to those that supported him, and for the people listening to Semi Pro. This is the beginning of something major, and you’d B Wise to remember the name and peep the EP, Semi Pro. Grab a copy here.
B Wise will be supporting Horrorshow on their If You Know What I Mean Tour which kicks off October 12 in Canberra. Tickets are selling rapidly, grab them here.

Fresh off an array of explosive showcases at this year’s BIGSOUND, B Wise has been working hard to cement himself as one of the finest emcees in the country. Announcing his debut project, the Semi Pro EP, he has now followed this up with a solemn and insightful visual accompaniment to the opening track No Questions.
An introspective look into the Sydney emcee’s past, detailing the struggle he’s faced to reach the point he is now, No Questions is incredibly inspirational. “Look where we are, look where we’re going, man look where we came from”, he says, while director Gabe Gasparinatos reflects this brilliantly in the clip.
The first half plays as a screen recording, presenting a range of pictures from B Wise’s youth, contextualising the humble narrative and monumental moments described below. Contrasting this, we are then pulled into B Wise’s present, the live performances, the tour life, the unrealistic childhood dream which he now lives.
Backed by a heartfelt yet uplifting beat, courtesy of the EP’s producer Dopamine, B Wise steps up with an elevated level of lyricism and wordplay for this heavily story based track. Revealing the extremely moving and inspirational story of his endeavour as an artist, the result is one of this year’s strongest Australian hip-hop releases.
There’s No Question B Wise is one of the most promising rising hip-hop artists in the country, and luckily for us he’s got plenty up his sleeves for the coming months. His debut Semi Pro EP drops this Friday, and to celebrate he’ll be touring all over the country with fellow Sydney heavyweights Horrorshow! Check out the music video and tour dates below.

2016 has flown by and it is already almost time for the best event on Brisbane’s musical calendar; BIGSOUND. It seems like the happy, hazy buzz of last year’s event has only just worn off, with many of the bands coming up through the festival’s ranks and rising to success in recent months. Remember when Tiny Little Houses were still just a blip on the indie radar? Or before Baro burrowed his way into your head for days?
The three day music industry conference and showcase will take place from the 7th-9th of September and is this year spanning across a mammoth fifteen venues, with over 150 bands creating an orchestra of mid-week madness for professionals and music lovers alike. Not to mention the pre/post/lunch time parties that promise around the clock frivolity throughout the entire week.
We know as well as anyone how hard it is to break out those highlighters and commit to a schedule dictated only by your inability to clone yourself, the disappointing lack of technology to speed up or slow down time, and the lack of super human speed to transport you between stages. To help you along the way we have compiled our list of ten moments that are not to be missed at this year’s event if you want any bragging rights for the next twelve months.
BIGSOUND is where the world discovers Australian music and in case you haven’t noticed, we are a little bit excited about what this year is going to bring.
