Azealia Banks, the personification of ignorant hatred, is likely going to be sued by Sarah Palin, after the rapper posted a series of tweets calling for Palin to be sexually assaulted.

The tweets came after Banks hilariously assumed that an obviously satirical website’s story was real. The story, which quotes the ex-Alaskan governor as saying that, “negroes loved being slaves and they were doing just fine under our rules”, before capping off with the pièce de résistance of, “negroes loved being slaves because of the simple fact that they can’t tackle the world around them on their own.”

Now Sarah Palin has said some fucked up shit in the past, but a god damn Alaskan moose would have had the foresight to at least cross-google that shit to make sure that it was real, before voicing concern. Regardless, the piece prompted Banks to launch some truly heinous tweets through her account, which have since been deleted, but not forgotten.

Palin, not to be outdone by Twitter’s favourite offensive celebrity, responded with a lengthy Facebook post, which starts off with, “Hey Female Rapper – listen up, little darling. No one has any idea what you’re wigging out about”, which apart from the phrase “wigging out” sounding like something a 90’s cartoon character would say to relate to young kids, is actually fairly patronising and diminutive to someone who is an established artist. Sarah Palin then continues her post with suggesting that her and Banks should work together to combat racism, misogyny and rape, before saying that she will be taking all of Azealia Banks’s music off her 15-year-old daughter’s playlists.

Of course this was not the end of it, Azealia Banks took to her Instagram (social media is the devil) to post a back-handed apology which can be summed up with Banks not realising that the article which angered her was satire and that she “never said (Palin) you should be raped” before clarifying that she used the term “run a train” which doesn’t mean the same thing. While she is correct that running a train on someone isn’t the same as rape, I think the fact that she said, “let them run a train” is really the point that suggests non-consensual sex. That, and the whole being locked in a cupboard after getting your head shaved and “headfucked” part.

Sarah Palin, who is clearly not accustomed to lengthy social media beefs of who said what, and which particular phrasing of a sentence can be deemed offensive, reached out to People and issued a statement in which she said that she will be straight up suing Azealia Banks.

“I’ve had enough of the unanswered threats and attacks against my family and me. So, for the first time I’m going to enjoy the only retribution some protected ‘celebrities’ seem to understand – I’m suing Azealia Banks and can’t wait to share my winnings with others who have gone defenseless against lies and dangerous attacks far too long.”

Now I’m not a Sarah Palin fan. I don’t like her very much at all to be honest. But my GOD, I really hope she goes through with the lawsuit. Azealia Banks is not only someone who should be monitored closely by her PR team to make sure she can’t reach any internet enabled devices, but is also the type of individual who doesn’t understand the sort of impact their social media rants can have, which she has demonstrated with suggesting that Iggy Azalea try harder at committing suicide after the Australian rapper admitted to suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts last year in a recent interview, and also evidenced by her continuing to direct shade at Sarah Palin after her apology Instagram post.

But mostly, I hope that Azealia Banks gets sued and loses the lawsuit, just so people think twice before issuing rape threats to anyone over social media.

Azealia Banks – Slay-J

Unfortunately for Azealia Banks, her penchant for Twitter feuds has overshadowed her musical talent over the years. While continually in the news for calling out everyone from Action Bronson, Iggy Azalea, right through to Australian festival goers, Banks’ long awaited debut, Broke With Expensive Taste, went generally unnoticed, which is a shame as it’s a terrific album. After quitting Twitter for a few weeks, the controversial artist returned to announce the release of free mixtape, Slay-Z, after her engineer began leaking tracks (she’s since deleted Twitter again).

Slay-Z – its name a tribute of sorts to Jay Z – is a mixture of hedonistic 90s dance, bubblegum pop and trap inspired beats that illuminate Banks’ ability to navigate all genres. Riot is something you’d expect from a Charli XCX and Nicki Minaj collaboration, while Skylar Diggins and singles The Big Big Beat and Used To Being Along are huge dance anthems featuring Banks rapping and singing. Kaytranada produced the slinky album closer Along The Coast while Rick Ross gets shown up by Banks’ rapid fire Lil Kim-esque flow on Big Talk.

Verdict: Forget the beefs. Banks proves her artistic worth with this one.

The Joy Formidable – Hitch

A throwback to the early 2000s alternative rock scene, The Joy Formidable‘s third album, Hitch, finds the Welsh trio’s sound maturing, with vocalist Rhiannon Bryan reaching her lyrical peak as a songwriter. The group’s love affair with hook laden rock numbers is still a big part of TJF, with the frenetic guitar rock of A Second In White opening the album before things change gear mid-album.

Although not a break-up album, Bryan and bassist Rhydain Dafydd‘s relationship broke down before recording this album and you can tell it’s influenced Bryan’s writing and TJF’s approach to this album. While there are plenty of rock and roll numbers littered throughout Hitch (Radio Lips, Blowing Fire, Running Hands With The Night) to please old fans, it’s the slower, more understated tracks (The Gift, Underneath The Petal, Liana) where the band come into their own and accentuate Brayn’s personal lyrical themes.

Verdict: Another great release from one of Britain’s most underrated acts.

Young Thug – Slime Season 3

It’s here. After weeks of hype and delays, Young Thug finally delivers the third and final instalment of his wildly successful Slime Season series. A more concise effort than previous editions, Slim Season 3 is everything you want from Thug, with the Atlanta rapper in typically creative form.

A number of tracks leaked over the last few days, so if you’re a Thugger fan you’ve no doubt heard the London On Da Track produced banger Digits and Kanye West-hyped With Them, complete with classic Thugger ad-libs.

Cropping up on the snare snapping Slime Shit, Yak Gotti is the only guest, and that’s fine by me. While Thug can conjure chemistry with just about anyone in the game, it’s his solo tracks where he really shines. Worth It slows the beat down and allows Thug to flex his singing voice, Memo and Tattoos are typical trap records, while closer Problem finds Thug in scatter brain flow, claiming he feels like Marilyn Manson, wants a Grammay, shouts out Nelly and urges the authorities to free Offset. It’s ordered chaos and that’s what makes Thug a rap enigma.

Verdict: Worth the wait. Now hurry up and drop Hy!£UN35 Thugger!

SBTRKT – Save Yourself

Two years on from his spectacular sophomore album, Wonder Where We LandSBTRKT has returned with surprise project Save Yourself. The eight track collection coincides with the launch of the website, saveyourselftv, accompanied by a mission statement explaining Save Yourself is not an album, but a complex aural and visual experience addressing SBTRKT’s thoughts and fears about the world and music, reflecting what’s come before and where we are headed. Very heavy stuff.

Despite the hefty themes running throughout Save Yourself, it’s the music that’s front and centre, and as you’d expect, SBTRKT doesn’t disappoint. The compilation weaves its way through R&B (Good Morning), two-step (Ready Or Not) and experimental electronica with flourishes of pop (I Feel Your Pain). SBTRKT enlists an eclectic array of guests, with The-Dream‘s smooth and sultry croon making its presence felt on three tracks, the best being the sullen album closer Bury You. Regular contributor Sampha lends a hand on TBD, but it’s the pairing of new comers D.R.A.M. and Mabel on the aformentioned I Feel Your Pain that had me coming back for one more listen.

Verdict: Save Yourself continues to push the boundaries of not only SBTRKT’s approach to making music, but the way we consume it as listeners, and we are all the better for it.

Azealia Banks is a force to be reckoned with. Nary an artist has not felt the wrath of her sharp tongue on Twitter. But now, she has turned her acerbic insights to the upcoming Presidential election. In an epic Twitter rant that would put Kanye West to shame, the feisty rapper explained why she was voting for Republican frontrunner Donald Trump while throwing shade at the other potential candidates.

Banks explained her choice was the lesser-of-two-evils path, saying that Hilary Clinton was in the pockets of others, while Bernie Sanders had no influence or power.

Banks seems to really not like the Democrat candidates, going on to say they don’t truly care about the plight of minorities.

Heavy stuff… What follows is a stream-of-consciousness, anti-capitalist, nihilistic rant about the doomed fate of America under any new leadership.

Therefore Banks believes we may as well put a ‘piece of shit’ like Trump in the White House.

Banks then goes onto talk about a conversation she had with a friend about the systemic oppression and racism propping up the illusion of the ‘American Dream’.

The conclusion Banks comes to like the rest of us is that, yes, Trump is evil, and ‘America is evil’ and America needs to be… more evil?

The inevitable backlash Banks faced from her followers prompted her to reaffirm her position on the matter by explaining, “No, to sum up my rant the USA owes my people reparations so I can round them up and get the fuck out of here … And to sum up my rant: I am saying that politicians are inherently evil, I trust the one who is most transparent.”

While Trump is indeed very upfront about his views on things, that doesn’t necessarily translate to transparency. Banks is a vocal advocate of race and gender inequality, so how can she support someone who openly mocks prominent female journalists for doing their jobs and wants to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S?

While Banks continues to keep to Twitter feed ticking over with her colossal outbursts, she has dodged assault charges relating to an altercation she had with a L.A nightclub bouncer back in October.

The Harlem emcee allegedly attacked the bouncer after she was asked to leave Break Room 86 due to ‘unruly behaviour.’ The case was thrown out due to the amount of individuals involved and it was unclear who exactly instigated the brawl.

However, this outburst was followed by another squabble, with Banks reportedly punching and biting the breast of a female security guard at New York’s Up & Down. She was arrested on a third-degree misdemeanour charge and even made it to Page Six. Apart from that, she’s also called a flight attendant a ‘faggot’. Charming. 

Banks ended her Presidential rant with the revelation that her upcoming record will be called THE BIG BEAT and will be released on February 7.

Macklemore’s new song White Privilege II was released last week, adding fuel to the fire that is the cultural appropriation debate. Now, Azealia Banks has hit back with a series of tweets – and for once, we agree with her. During her rant, she encouraged listeners to not to be so quick to “applaud Macklemore for shit black artists have been saying for years.”

Despite beef with Iggy Azalea, she actually stood up for her. Azalea was mentioned by name in the song and shamed for exploiting black culture. “You’re Miley, you’re Elvis, you’re Iggy Azalea / Fake and so plastic, you’ve heisted the magic.”

Calling him a misogynist, she encouraged Macklemore to take on Eminem instead as that would “make a statement”. She was sure to mention that she has nothing against white rappers, she only wants to “hear two white rappers beef.” She named a few of the white rappers she does like, including Post Malone, Spooky Black, Machine Gun Kelly, Eminem and Big Daddy Ryan, along with Kesha.

Azealia Banks, the 24-year old Harlem rapper, has once again snatched headlines for questionable behaviour. This time it’s for assaulting a female bouncer at Meatpacking club Up & Down.

Azealia Banks has gone through a spree of aggressive behaviour lately, making the news with antics that include beating down a security guard at L.A’s Break Room 86, and also throwing out some casual homophobic slurs at a flight attendant on a Delta flight from New York to LAX.

The Harlem rapper can now proudly add “biting” to her already impressive assault charges, after lashing out at a female security guard because she wasn’t allowed into the “exclusive” area of the club in question. The club’s manager – prior to the bite – attempted to deescalate the situation by giving the rapper the stamp required for entrance only for her to become more upset once inside and assault the female security guard.

“It appeared that she was offended that the security did not know who she was or recognize her as a celebrity. This resulted in an altercation, which another insider tells us also involved her spitting in the owner’s face, and it ultimately led to her being escorted out by the female security guard who became the victim of Banks’ alleged assault,” E! Online reports.

The NY District Attorney commented that the bite left the security guard with, “redness, swelling, serious pain and bruising”.

After being escorted out of the premise, Azealia Banks allegedly punched the same female bouncer and was quickly thereafter arrested by police. The rapper now faces charges of misdemeanour assault, harassment and disorderly conduct, leaving us to seriously wonder about the state of her mental wellbeing. #PrayForAzealia

It’s rare to see Azealia Banks in the spotlight for anything pertaining to her music, rather than her Twitter feed, but with the release of the video for Count Contessa, she’s made a long awaited switch. The track was the first to be release from Fantasea II, the rapper’s second LP with a still unknown release date. Reports initially suggested the LP would be dropped in July 2014, but with Banks citing troubles with her label and management, it may be a long while until we get to hear the record in full.

Directed by Rony Alwin, the video begins with the rapper walking a pig and getting her fortune read (the fortune teller is also played by Banks), learning that she will soon encounter some romance. The track then kicks off, with Banks dancing in a bathing suit and serving that nonchalant attitude she’s known for. The video also features an unknown female co-star who one could assume is the romantic interest spoken of prior, although it’s never made clear in the video.

The video premiered on Fun-Mag, which also posted a special behind-the-scenes on the life of Azealia Banks. Banks’ discussed her ever-upcoming album with them, stating that “I’ve been working on a full body of work, aka an album, since I was 17 years old. Now, all sorts of things like life and circumstance have happened since then”. It could be possible that she’s simply given up on Fantasea II. However, considering she’s still releasing visual accompaniment’s for tracks that were released years ago, it’s unlikely she has a new or different project in the works.

Again at the centre of a little bit of controversy, rapper Azealia Banks continues to make it hard to love her with her latest series of PR moves gone bad. The NYC artist recently cancelled a string of tour dates citing that she is “too busy” to go on the road, which is now the second set of cancelled shows in the last few months.

The last tour was set to take place alongside R & B artist K. Michelle but was cancelled due to a conflicting schedule, and resulted in a signature Banks beef, complete with some nasty school yard social media mud slinging.

This is not the songstress’s first beef, believe it or not. The artist, who in recent times has become better known for her social media controversies than her music, has taken up similar arms against, ahem, Angel Haze, Iggy Azalea, A$AP Rocky, Action Bronson, Disclosure, Lily Allen, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar… you get the idea. In fact, with a list of enemies so talented, there is almost a case for an anti-Azealia compilation album.

After the recent show cancellation it has come to light via TMZ that singer and her entourage are being investigated by L.A. police after an assault on a security guard who kicked them out of nightclub Break Room 86. You can check out the video here.

If you are still on the fence about whether Banks is just misunderstood, maybe we need to remind you about earlier this year when she called an air hostess a “fucking faggot“, or slammed Australian audiences after her Splendour In The Grass performance, or agreed with Donald Trump’s take on immigration?

Azealia Banks has surpassed even herself as queen of controversy, after a video has emerged (or rather exploded) of her lashing a flight attendant with homophobic slurs.

TMZ reports that when her flight landed, Banks headed straight for the door, before being held up by a French couple a few rows ahead of her as they got their baggage down from the overhead storage. it’s not exactly uncalled for on uncommon the whole, waiting for people to clear their stuff out of an aeroplane – but when you’re Azealia Banks, it’s not cool. Duh.

Banks was then halted from moving past them as the French man put his hand up when she tried to squeeze through.

Cue tantrum. According to reports, Banks actually spat in his face, clawed at her shirt and potentially even punched him in the face. From here a flight attendant became involved in the tussle and a less-than-jovial tug of war ensued over her baggage. From here the video begins, where Azealia eventually calls the flight attendant a “fucking f*ggot”.

Holy shit.

The co-pilot apparently then called police, and Banks ran off the plane, dropping her cell phone in the process.

The issue never went any further (criminally anyway) because the French couple didn’t want the hassle on their holiday to the US.

However, it seems Azealia won’t escape liability as her trial by media is only just heating up.

Who really knows what occurred before the video begins – Azealia has stated since that it was in fact the man who punched her. Plus one unnamed eyewitness isn’t exactly conclusive.

But the video speaks for itself. There’s never an excuse to use homophobic slurs, and she even admits in the video the man was just getting his luggage down. This also isn’t the first time Banks has used homophobic slurs. The 212 singer doesn’t even attempt an apology – instead has taken to Twitter in an attempt to defend herself. She’s posted articles promoting why “black women’s anger is necessary for change”, and how it’s sexist that men are trying to take her bags from her, and how a white woman would have simply been let through. If it is the case that she was assaulted by the man, then potentially she can maybe play one of these cards. But it seems she was just being a brat who is now trying to defend herself by saying that “all her employees are gay”. God Azealia, for someone who preaches about inequality, that’s really not how it works.

Thing is, we don’t think it’s actually about homophobia. She chose to say that word, yes, but it doesn’t feel like she was actually criticising him for being gay, if he even was. It’s about Azealia Banks repeatedly showing herself to be a selfish, ridiculous diva. And there’s no way we’re going to be able to respect her, or take her seriously as an artist if she chooses to repeatedly show us through this kind of regressive behaviour, that she is, quite frankly, just a dickhead, a childish, immature diva.

She has no right to use that word. But more than that, she has no right to exert that kind of behaviour, just because she’s a celebrtiy. it’s a fucking aeroplane, Azealia. People have to get their stuff off aeroplanes. Same as you. And their stuff isn’t necessarily less important than yours just because people know who you are.

Once you realise that, we can talk.

This week, the Abbott government has disappointed us once again. After more than five hours in a meeting, Tony Abbott and the Coalition have once again left Australia in the world’s ‘traditionalist’ shadow, denying the decision for a conscious vote for Marriage Equality. If you’re on any form of social media, you’d know people are not happy about this news. They can’t understand how places like the USA and Ireland can pass similar laws, but Australians can’t even get a foot in the chapel door.

It may seem hopeless now but, as an optimist, I still believe that one day we will have marriage equality for all Australians. And so, we’ve put together a little playlist from proud LGBTQI artists to keep our spirits up. We need to fight for those who are going unheard. Like these artists, we have a platform to express a certain view and have a voice above the rest of the community. Here are some of their stories.

Mykki Blanco – Wavvy

Mykki Blanco has been one of the most outspoken rappers within the LGBTQI community. The rapper bravely revealed that she was HIV positive, having also previously announced that she would quit music to become an investigative journalist, concentrating on LGBT issues. We refer to her as ‘she’ as per her wishes as she embarks on what she calls the beginning of a transgendered life. “You may not know it yet, but Mykki Blanco isn’t just female Mykki. Mykki Blanco is Mykki Blanco ‘female,’ Mykki Blanco ‘male,’ Mykki Blanco with blue eyes, Mykki Blanco with three eyes. I’m probably eventually going to do a video where it’s not Mykki, where it’s completely genderless, where it won’t be Mykki ‘boy’ or ‘girl,”  she tells Dummy Magazine.

Her break out 2012 track Wavvy is said to be one of the most influential in emerging LGBTQI community within rap culture. When you look at the music video, you can see both sides of Blanco’s identity. The fact that she decided to make this clear so early in her career is inspiring.

St Vincent – Cruel

St Vincent has kept talk of her sexuality low key. It’s not that she’s hiding it; rather, she doesn’t want to be defined by it – and she doesn’t want to define it. In an interview with Rolling Stone she says, “I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity. I don’t really identify as anything… I don’t have anything to hide, but I’d rather the emphasis be on music.”

Her music reflects on her personal experiences, so if you listen closely to can hear the little hidden messages. Cruel is one of the most obvious ones, with lines like “Bodies, can’t you see what everybody wants from you? f you could want that, too, then you’ll be happy.”

The music video also gives away a political undertone, where is she kidnapped and forced to be a wife and mother – a traditionalist notion that can often come head-to-head with some in the LGBTQI community.

Angel Haze – Battle Cry

Angel Haze is one of the newest LGBTQI rappers on the scene. In an interview with Fusion TV, Haze identified herself as a pansexual, otherwise known as people “who love across a spectrum.”

Her 2014 track Battle Cry featuring Sia (who is also apart of the LGBTQI community) tackles the darkness every LGBTQI person feels when they are told that the way they feel is wrong. The powerful video illustrates her pain and suffering – having been pushed around, her whole life, being told how to feel. Religion is one of the biggest obstacles for marriage equality, with the notion of a man and woman in marriage being the only one acceptable. According to them, all other forms of love are wrong.

Haze gives these people strength. Her emotional story tells those who listen that they can survive, even when it all seems hopeless. Even through the dark times, “You take it all and you still go/Take the sun and you still grow/ Lose the light and you still glow”.

Years and Years – Real

Years and Years Frontman Olly Alexander has been an advocate for gay artists using gender specific pronouns in their songs. As an openly gay musician, he has in two tracks on their last album, Real and Memo. “I’d like to hear a gay artist express their sexuality in a really open way. That’s something I’ve sort of tried to do a little bit on this album, but to be able to talk about sex is possibly new for gay artists, so I’d like to see that in the mainstream. I think you’re right – music does feel like it’s in a much more accepted, tolerant place; even with Miley Cyrus, when she doesn’t identify with either gender, and we’re getting used to these ideas of about non-binary gender, which is a good thing,” he told Digital Spy.

Real is about loving someone and attempting to peruse them, but you can’t have them. While it sounds like it’s a take on unrequited love on the surface, it could be taken another way. While some people are out and proud about showing who they are to the world, others aren’t quite there yet. They will deny who they are and reject others’ advances, even if they don’t want to.

Frank Ocean – Forrest Gump

When Frank Ocean came out in 2012, many musicians refused to work with him. T-Pain told Vlad TV, “”I know n***as that will not do a song with Frank Ocean just because he gay, but they need him on the f**king song and that’s so terrible to me, man… What I do ain’t going to affect nothing that you got going on.”

There are a few songs that hint Ocean’s sexuality, including Forrest Gump. Like Years and Years, he uses male pronouns instead of female ones. Lines like “my fingertips, and my lips, they burn” imply that it was about a relationship that feels wrong. So wrong, it hurts.

Laura Jane Grace and Miley Cyrus – True Trans Soul Rebel

Both Laura Jane Grace and Miley Cyrus have come out as transsexual and bisexual respectively. They performed True Trans Soul Rebel together to launch the Happy Hippie Foundation. The Foundation promotes awareness of LGBTQI issues, among many others. The lyrics of the song portray the thoughts many transgender people have while they are stuck in the wrong body, including that they “should be living a different life.”

Mary Lambert – She Keeps Me Warm

Mary Lambert is one of the few openly gay female musicians in the music industry. Being both a Christian and lesbian, the internal and external conflicts have, of course, been prevalent. Before it was featured as the chorus of Ryan Lewis and Macklemore’s Same Love with her as the female vocals, the lyrics were a part of the singer’s own track She Keeps Me Warm. The slow, folk-like song was a heartfelt ballad saying that this is simply who she is and she “can’t change, even if [she] wanted to.”

Azealia Banks – 212

Azealia Banks is one of the most controversial of those on this list. Despite being bisexual and using female pronouns in 212, she is often called homophobic due to her gay slurs on social media. This might just be another example of others lacking in understanding of what homophobia is. When you read her tweets, you may see what I mean. For instance, her tweet about men being proud of their sexuality could be taken as others missing the fact that women can be gay as well, however, this isn’t as publicised.

The Internet – Girl

The Internet’s frontwoman Syd The Kyd came out in the Odd Future’s music video for Cocaine. Her sexuality is made explicitly obvious in Girl. She sings about the passion LGBTQI people feel in their relationship, implying they are exactly the same as those in heterosexual relationships. They have the same fire and lust that eventually grows into love. So why shouldn’t they have the same rights as we do?

The Smiths – Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Many people over the years have thought Morrissey was gay. In his own words he is asexual, meaning he feels no sexual feelings toward men or women. He explained this in a post on his fansite True To You: “Unfortunately, I am not homosexual. In technical fact, I am humasexual. I am attracted to humans. But, of course … not many”.

It’s one of the more forgotten and misunderstood forms of sexuality that is disregarded by many. That’s why this song is regarded as the perfect example of a song about the solitary life of an asexual person; away from the noise and all alone. They hope one day someone would understand, but it’s “just another false alarm”.
