Welcome to The Soundtrack, a column where we plumb the depths of our musical knowledge to bring you the best* (subjective) music to listen to for very specific life situations. This week, we help you walk home alone at night with a touch more confidence.
There’s really nothing quite like a solo stroll. Calming, good for the environment and introspective – even cathartic – we wholeheartedly endorse walking as a mode of personal transportation. However, walking alone at night can bring its own set of issues. Of course, violence can occur at any time of day, and let’s dispel the myth of “a stranger hiding in the bushes” being the primary cause of it right off the bat. But that doesn’t mean that most of us don’t feel a little uneasy when trotting home under cover of darkness by ourselves. That goes double for those who identify as women/non-binary/LGBTQ. I’m not saying we’re fragile lil kittens who need constant reassurance we’re going to be okay (altho that does sound pretty nice tbh), but the reality is that these groups are by and large the most targeted by this particular brand of assailant. Of course, listening to music isn’t going to assure physical safety, but what it can do is provide a much needed confidence boost when you’re thinking about recent incidents in your area and flinching at every shadow or cicada noise. We gotchu.
friendships – When I Feel Like Killing, I Murder
I’ve always felt unreservedly intrigued by friendships. The Melbourne duo are more of an art project than a band, pairing Nic’s audio with Mischa’s visual to hypnotic effect. This cut, driven by dark, skittering synths and a monster-esque pitched-down vocal, is positively horror movie worthy. BUT you’re the one listening to it, so guess who the big bad wolf is that everyone within five suburbs should be terrified of? You. You’re a force to be reckoned with, and friendships are gonna make sure you don’t forget it. Ignore every passerby with a steely glare. They scatter to the sides of the pathway as you cleave through the streets to your dwelling with only one thing on your mind: that really great book you’ve been reading and a cup of herbal tea.
Sleigh Bells – Rule Number One
Pretty much any song in Sleigh Bells’ discography would be right at home on this week’s The Soundtrack. But this track – which I’ve already sung the praises of – honestly takes the cake. Pop rocks and coke make your head explode, according to Alexis Krauss, but we beg to differ. It’s this song that really puts you in danger of cranial combustion. And we mean that in the best way possible. Rule Number One marks the part of your journey were you really start to get your strut on; the strut of a person who could burn their enemies to the ground with a snap of their fingers. Nobody is a match for you and your immense power. May god have mercy on the souls of all who’ve wronged you, because you won’t. You’ll just unhinge your jaw, eat their souls, and launch them into the sun.
Grimes – Kill V. Maim [Little Jimmy Urine remix]
One of our favourite things about the endlessly talented producer is that she flat-out refuses to write about romantic relationships, preferring to mine more unorthodox premises for her art. According to the almighty Grimes herself, this track is basically about The Godfather if all of the mobsters were vampires. How fantastically batshit is that? Anyone familiar with this song will know it’s already as ferocious as a rabid jaguar, the sort of song that threatens to throw the earth off its axis. Maybe invest in some anti-gravity boots to wear on your walk, or something, because this remix takes it to a level we didn’t actually know existed. Personally, when I’m feeling a little anxious walking home alone, I like to take one earbud out for maximum awareness of my surroundings, but like I’m not rly sure that’d even make much of a difference with this one cos it’s so ~hectic~.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll [A-Trak remix]
Ahhhh what a classic – except – different? If you saw that (imho) very dumb movie Project X a couple years back you’ll recognise this from the soundtrack of that. Erase that memory and from this day forward, only recognise it as being from The Soundtrack Of This. This is equal parts threatening and bouncy, so you can kind of get your walk-dance on while you give the mental middle finger to the world for being so awful that the simple act of walking home is troubling. There’s enough of a blatant party vibe here to get lost in that hopefully you won’t have the energy to freak yourself out over whether that white car is the same as the other white car that passed you ten minutes ago. That is *not* to say don’t be alert and safe. It’s just to say, take care of yourself, babe.
Sampa the Great – F E M A L E
This is definitely the most chill track on this playlist, sonically speaking. How many tracks in your collection boast a bloody upright bass? Hell yessss, that is cool as heck, and that’s to say nothing of Sampa The Great and what she unpacks on this track. Sampa is a certified badass and she’s all about shouting out to empower others. This song will help you focus on all the things that make you such an untouchable boss. The adversity you’ve overcome (and keep overcoming every day)? I can’t speak for everyone, but that shit feels like water off a duck’s back while I’m mouthing along with Sampa: F E M A L E, F E M A L EEEE. Would recommend screaming the same at anyone who ever gives you grief over the course of your life, honestly.

We were lucky to catch the incredible What So Not at his homecoming show in at the Enmore theatre in Sydney last Thursday, along with Canadian co-headliner A-Trak. The night was opened by Oh Glam and Mickey Kojack, before each headlining artist took their turn. The grand finale came by way of a spectacular, albeit short B2B sound-off, bringing an end to a brilliant night at the Enmore. Unfortunately Rome Fortune, who had previously been announced as a special guest, was unable to head to Australia for the tour in the end. Nevertheless, it was still an unforgettable night, and the crowd loved every moment.
The pair have since continued their tour, burning holes in dance floors in both Adelaide and Perth. This week will see them play two shows in Melbourne, with the final date in Brisbane this weekend. Dates are as follows:
Thu, Jul 7th: Prince Bandroom, Melbourne, VIC
Fri, Jul 8th: Prince Bandroom, Melbourne, VIC
Sat, Jul 9th: Max Watt’s, Brisbane, QLD
Information and any remaining tickets can be found right here on What So Not’s official website. Don’t miss out!

It’s great to see a famous Aussie come back home to give us some love, so when What So Not (A.K.A Chris Emerson) announced his Australian headline tour, we were pretty stoked. Emerson will be teaming up with legendary DJ A-Trak later this year as they tour Australia in early July. Having just performed at Groovin The Moo and slated on the Splendour In The Grass lineup, 2016 is shaping up to be a massive year for the Sydney native.
What So Not is fresh off the back of a new release Lone, featuring JOY. and co-produced by GANZ, as well as a remix of RUFUS‘ Inerbloom. Now, it looks like the Australian winter will be spiced up by Emerson’s homecoming. In addition to A-Trak, Atlanta rapper and recent signee to Fool’s Gold Records Rome Fortune will be joining the tour.
A-Trak is also an exciting announcement to be touring with What So Not. One of the more versatile figures in electronic music, A-Trak is the man behind the legendary Fool’s Gold Records, and one of the most respected DJs in the world. To see such a big name coming to Australia for a headline tour is exciting to say the least.
Tickets will be available after Thursday 19 May here at What So Not’s website. Tour dates are below:
The enigmatic and beguiling artist Zhu is back after several months of silence – and he’s just as confusing as ever. The electronic music producer updated his Facebook profile picture two days ago, to reveal a picture for a new Genesis Series project, redirecting them to a jumble of words on the mysterious site GenerationWHY.com. The website simply asks for your email address and offers social media sharing buttons.
What seemed like random pattern of words turned out to actually be the names of several big artists. As far as we can tell, Zhu will be collaborating with these for what might me an album-sized project. Skrillex, Alunageorge, A-Trak, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Gallant, They, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, Keznamdi and Daniel Johns can be found in the letter matrix.
Although other information concerning the website seems to be scant, an album that would come out of these collaborations could be huge. Judging from the success of his biggest hit to date, the Grammy nominated Faded, the formerly anonymous artist could be onto something on a whole new scale.
The producer recently released a new track in a mix for Pete Tong on BBC Radio One, a 40-minute mix of featuring edits of his previous releases like Faded and Superfriends, as well as some Snoop Dog to finish it off. It includes a bunch of remixes and covers, including of The Weeknd’s Often and Outkast tracks Ms Jackson and ATLiens. Check that out here:

Zhu visited Australia for Listen Out 2014 – you can check the details of the 2015 event here, happening later this month.
The Ocean Party, Deluded
Bassist Mark Rogers cuts a rug in the backstreets of Fitzroy, Melbourne to what is one of the most impressive tracks on one of 2014’s most impressive albums. The Ocean Party are going from strength to strength these days, but maybe what they didn’t even know they were missing lies in the mystery man at the end of the clip? Catch them on tour soon!
A-Trak, Push ft Andrew Wyatt
One of my favourite dance tracks of last year has seen A-Trak return to his rightful spot on top after a little break. Featuring the undeniably striking and captivating vocals of Miike Snow‘s Andrew Wyatt, this is piano-house at it’s banging best! The clip gets weird with some pretty crazy scenes of young high society, and is actually perfectly suited to the track. A-Trak recently told The Fader, “I also really wanted a tiger and a squid, I was very specific about that.” Classic A-Trak.
RATKING, Snow Beach
Landing in Australia very soon for Laneway Festival, RATKING have done it again with their latest clip for Snow Beach. Braving the freezing cold (20 degrees Fahrenheit, people), the boys take us on a tour of NYC including the deserted beach. Known for their ability to push the boundaries with their captivating and demanded music, Snow Beach is one of the best songs off their 2014 album So It Goes. TOASTIIIIIIING!
Total Giovanni, Can’t Control My Love
I can’t stop raving about this group, and their latest clip is just adding to my argument that Total Giovanni are one of the most exciting groups to come out of Melbourne in 2014. The film clip for their second track, Can’t Control My Love centres around a group of bad boys getting up to no good, with things not sitting right with the youngest member. When they pick on a young girl – the object of the young boy’s affections – things take a turn for the better thanks to the disco breakdown in the new track. Also, a moment of respect for Total Giovanni’s cameos and the outfits they’re wearing.
POMO, Back 2 U
POMO is on the same label as Kaytranada (HW&W Recordings), and performs alongside HudMo, Giraffage and SpazzKid, so he must know what he’s doing! His first ever music video off his debut 8 track EP, The Other Day, is stunning, with beautiful imagery of professional high diving. However, things get really trippy as the scene begins to warp and melt until it’s completely unrecognisable. The song is catchy as all hell too, and shows there are big things to come from the Canadian producer!
