The Preatures had a relatively quiet 2016. Having dropped their last single I Know A Girl back in August, we’re hoping that their new album, the follow-up to 2014’s stellar debut Blue Planet Eyes, will soon be upon us – considering they recently had to pull out of March festival Party in The Park due to “commitments finishing and mixing this record,” we’re pretty hopeful. The group, who last year farewelled guitarist Gideon Benson, have kicked off 2017 with a couple live dates. Last week they headlined the University of Sydney’s O Week festival, playing at The Manning Bar on Thursday, March 2. Joining The Preatures was the wonderful Ngaiire on support, who released one of our favourite albums of 2016 in Blastoma.

Sydney’s wildest noise-makers Totally Unicorn brought their 2016 album Dream Life to the Chippo Hotel in Sydney last week. The beastly bearded legends lived up to their reputation as one of the best live acts in town, and it only takes a quick look through these photos to figure out exactly why that is.

We’re finally heading toward the tail-end of summer, and though festival season may be on its way out, there’s still tours aplenty to keep our ears and dancing feet up and at ’em. Clairy Browne took to the stage of Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory last Friday, during her first run of national tour dates in two years. The shows are in support of her latest album Pool, released last April, and we were lucky enough to get in on the action.

The supremely talented Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins is currently in Australia to perform at Laneway festival, one of the only international hip-hop names, and one of the biggest drawcards for us here at H&E. Quickly developing a devoted fanbase and a critically acclaimed name for himself through a pair of groundbreaking EPs – The Water[s] and Wave[s], he released an incredible album last year, The Healing Component (THC). Known for his engaging, magnetic live performances, he took to one of Sydney’s most intimate and respected stages, The Basement, for his headline sideshow on Thursday February 2. Joining Mick on opening duties was the ever-amazing Sampa The Great, who has previously opened for artists including Kendrick Lamar and Thundercat.
