Even the most gifted marketing manager couldn’t have dreamt up the publicity and constant media attention that Wu-Tang Clan‘s Once Upon A Time In Shaolin has received. The news that a sole physical copy of the album was auctioned off for $2 million was enough to ensure some coverage of a neat marketing gimmick, but the fact that the ultimate buyer turned out to be the greatest comic book villain of our time has blasted attention levels into unchartered waters.

Any publicity is good publicity right? Well, sadly for RZA and putrid pharma personality Martin Shkreli, that’s not exactly the case. They are the targets of a brand new lawsuit, this time at the hands of artist Jason Koza, who is seeking damages and profits from the album for what he claims is the unauthorised use of artwork which depicts the Wu-Tang members in all their glory.

According to Mr Koza, he was informed that his artwork would only be housed on a Wu-Tang blogspot site. The artwork however, in some way or another, managed to sneak it’s way into the one-off album that has now gone down in hip-hop folklore.

For Martin Shkreli, this is the latest in a string of high-profile Wu-Tang related incidents, the most fascinating of course being the public back and forth between the wily weasel and Ghostface Killahwho have flung threats and verbal barbs at one another via horribly produced videos, neither of which have resulted in any physical ramifications.

With all the legal furore surrounding the album, you have to wonder if Wu-Tang Clan are regretting the decision to make a spectacle of their album sale at all.

Snoop Dogg has a gift for creating something out of nothing. Who knew he could create a global buzz around Burger King branching out into hotdogs? An idea that quite frankly (pun absolutely intended) sounds frightening.

In a leaked internal staff training video, Snoop Dogg is revealed as the “Grilled Dogs Training Ambassador”, teaching Burger King staff all about the art of preparing hotdogs. Where can we petition to get Snoop to do training videos for EVERY job?

Today we’re training ya’ll about the newest menu item. Grilled Dogs. Hot dogs grilled to perfection. Break out the burners, as we grillin’ this dog my way; bikinis, martinis, zucchinis, yeah you know the rest. “

What follows is a captivating minute and a half of hot dog and condiment related puns, as Snoop trains haphazard Burger King employees through a crash course in preparing the new menu item.

Just in case you weren’t aware, relish is “nothing but chopped up pickles”.  Snoop Dogg, you have yet again blown my mind.

Although Snoop Dogg seems to have distanced himself from the hip-hop track making that made him a household name, he has taken to the entertainment world effortlessly, starring in a slew of commercials, heading up an anti-gun campaign, and providing a dose of social commentary in ways only Snoop D-Oh-Dub can provide.

Most importantly however, was the stellar news that Snoop’s weed filled online talk show, GGN, is set for a shift to the small screen. While we wait impatiently for new episodes to surface, we can revel in Snoop Dogg and his ability to make even a Burger King hot dog entertaining.

Tinashe has been killing it lately. From teasing her own solo projects via collaborations with Juicy J, Metro Boomin and Mike WiLL Made It, to shooting up the charts alongside Snakehips and Chance The Rapper for All My Friends, Tinashe has been carving out her own name in the industry and establishing one heck of a brand. A little extra help here and there doesn’t hurt however.

Thanks to some stellar timing and some crafty uploading by some internet aficionados, the Kentucky native has been riding on the coattails of Rihanna‘s latest smash single Work, which features none other than Drizzy Drake himself. Tinashe’s own track, Watch Me Work, was incorrectly uploaded to YouTube and although it has now subsequently been taken down for copyright reasons, it was not before amassing a cool 11 million views.

The track itself debuted in 2014, but the recent attention it has garnered has catapulted it to the number 5 spot on the Billboard ‘Bubbling Under Charts’. With millions of listeners clearly oblivious to the apparent mislabelling of the track, Tinashe is reaping all of the benefits, with her most recent single, Player, which featured Chris Brown, peaked at number 3 on the very same chart.

Mistaken identity could end up being a blessing in disguise for Tinashe, particularly as she has just announced her Joyride world tour, and looks set to build on her breakout 2015.

As a response to the sudden attention for Watch Me Work, the track has now been made available on Vevo and iTunes for the plethora of new Tinashe fans out there to listen to, in all of it’s correctly labelled glory. Talk about capitalising on a timely error.

Dramatic readings aren’t the ideal means of attracting the attention of millennials, although for some reason the art of the spoken word in a satirical comedic form has undergone a renaissance in the past few years. We’ve seen fresh faced NBA rookies deliver their own interpretation of Drake‘s discography,  and we have also watched in awe as Christopher Walken provided his best Lady Gaga impression with a heartfelt rendition of Poker Face.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy5JwYOlgvY

Justin Bieber has now been given the dramatic reading treatment courtesy of Vanity Fair, with a slew of celebrity faces joining forces to recite the lyrics to the 2015 smash, Sorry. Nick Jonas, Judd Apatow, John Legend, Ellen Page, and Don Cheadle (just to name a few) don their best poker faces to turn a pop song with little lyrical foundation into a poetic verse of the highest order. Mad Men hotshot Jon Hamm shows his age, flaunting his ignorance at the mere existence of the track:

Is it too late to say that I’m sorry that I don’t know the song ‘I’m Sorry’ by Justin Bieber?”

Yes Jon Hamm, it is too late to say sorry, because for many, this is the song that converted us to the holy religion of Belieberist, a following where fans from all walks of life gather to voice their surprise and appreciation for this well dressed and unfairly good looking specimen; “Hey, this kid can really sing! Maybe he’s not such a douche after all!”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1q1Be8wH6c

This isn’t the first time that Justin Bieber has been treated to a dramatic reading reinterpretation however, with none other than Liam Neeson delivering a gritty reimagining of the early Biebz classic, Boyfriend.

All that’s missing now is a dramatic reading of Where Are U Now. One can only hope.

While Beyoncé is busy single handedly sending the Internet into meltdown following her Super Bowl performance, one of the rap minds behind her latest surprise single has been placed firmly in the cross hairs of outspoken radio personality Ebro Darden.

The face of legendary NY rap station Hot 97, and one of the three main presenters at the helm of Apple Music‘s Beats 1 radio alongside Julie Adenuga and Zane Lowe, Ebro has taken it upon himself to call out the role of Swae Lee‘s co-writing attribution for Beyonce’s Formation, engaging in some good old fashioned Twitter beef with fellow Rae Sremmurd member Slim Jimmy and iconic producer Mike Will Made It, who produced the Beyonce banger.

Starting out innocent enough, the Twitter banter quickly turned spiteful when Ebro declared that he would play the upcoming Sremmlife2 front to back on the radio, urging the young rappers to “get their bars up” as “swag rappin in 2016 is zzzzzz” – tweets he later deleted

This isn’t the first time that the charismatic radio persona has voiced his distaste for the Mississippi duo, failing to come to grips with the swag rap movement during multiple hot 97 interviews, and questioning the acclaim of their debut album Sremmlife, engaging in a heated argument with Complex over its decision to place the project at number three of its top 50
albums of 2015.

Surely it’s largely in part to a generation gap, but having been at the helm of an iconic rap station for so long, and developing himself as one of the few faces of Apple Music, it seems unwise to discredit the accomplishments of one of raps rising stars and influential personalities.

It’s 2016, but radio seems to be making one heck of a comeback. Hot on the heels of Future debuting his latest album, EVOL, on the inaugural episode of DJ Khaled‘s Beats 1 radio show, Chance The Rapper has unveiled that he is to be the latest recipient of his own Beats 1 broadcast.

Taking to the airwaves on Pharrell‘s radio offering OTHERtone, Chance revealed that he will be at the helm of his own show, and whilst there is currently no name set in stone, it looks a definite possibility that it will don the ‘World Wide Chicago’ moniker.

Chance joins a rapidly expanding group making their foray into radio, featuring none other the aforementioned Pharrell, Khaled and of course Drizzy Drake himself. Quite the esteemed collection of colleagues.

Forever the advocate for his hometown, the creative mind behind Acid Rap has continued to hold it down for his city despite becoming a global household name. Chance has recently led campaigns to provide winter coats for the homeless in order to brave the harsh Chicago winters, and has been named the Chicagoan of the year in recognition for his ongoing efforts to assist his hometown.

Whilst the content and premise of Chance’s show is not yet known, with the hashtags accompanying the tweets that are following the announcement, it would be a safe bet to assume that Chicago vibes and artists will feature aplenty.

When Mike WiLL Made-It isn’t stepping into Twitter beefs to defend Rae Sremmurd, he’s attempting to recruit his musical partner in crime (and ice cream face-tattooed friend) Gucci Mane to host his upcoming album from prison.

Mike WiLL has revealed that his attempts to debut and host his upcoming album (formerly mixtape) Ransom2 from the confines of Gucci Mane’s prison cell have been banned.

Taking to Twitter to vent his frustrations, the iconic producer declared that ‘the Feds’ were responsible for shutting down what would’ve been a unique hip hop occurrence. However, given Gucci’s penchant for ending up in the pen, it’s unsurprising that any such privilege was not granted. The rapper is notorious for his legal battles and run-ins with the law, and let’s be honest, can you really trust someone who has an ice cream cone tattooed on their face? Exactly.

Gucci-Mane-Ice-Cream-Cone-tattoo

Mike WiLLl also revealed arguably the best excuse as to why the project itself has been delayed in the first place; he was too busy producing Formation for Beyoncé herself. Talk about a get out of jail free card.

In an attempt to appease fans who might be disappointed at the news of a lack of Gucci involvement, Mike WiLL announced that the next collaborative project between the two, Trap Tape, will be released upon Gucci’s release from jail (whenever that may be).

Clearly Beyonce wasn’t enough. The Super Bowl got greedy with their promos. Even the biggest sporting event on the planet isn’t satisfied until it can incorporate some Drizzy Drake into the proceedings.

Sporting fans, commercial lovers and clueless Australians tuning into Super Bowl 50 this morning were greeted to the exciting (albeit brief) news that everyone’s favourite Toronto musical tyrant, Drake, would be gracing the Grammys with a performance, joining the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd. The short CBS promo sent rap fans into meltdown, with potential rumours that viewers could be treated to another single off the forthcoming and highly anticipated Views From The 6.

Sadly however, the news was so exclusive and so utterly mind blowing that it turned out to be false, and was subsequently shot down by Drake himself in a tongue in cheek tweet.

The Grammys would seemingly be the perfect stage for Drizzy to unveil some of his newest musical stylings, however it would seem that he is hellbent on putting the finishing touches on what is arguably the most anticipated rap release of 2016. Fans were treated to Summer Sixteen late last week, courtesy of episode 14 of Drake’s exclusive Beats 1 radio program, OVO Sound Radio. Drake would of course have every reason to perform knowing that his Meek Mill diss track, Back to Back, scored a nomination.

With award shows and global sporting events clamouring for some 6God presence of their own, we can be rest assured that Drake is in for one heck of a 2016; he’s rap’s hottest property, and with Views From The 6 dropping in April, our Drake cravings are about to be satisfied.

There are few albums that can wholly encapsulate the melancholy nature of teenage angst without venturing into corny pop punk territory. I’ve previously explored Take Off Your Pants And Jacket by Blink-182 as they provided a unique unison of cringe worthy comedy and serious sentiments.

However, Deja Entendu by Brand New is a brooding, depressing and captivating journey through a range of emotions; an album which has established itself as a cult classic among pop punk purists (or hipsters, whatever you’d prefer to call them). The record jumps effortlessly through the emotions that can so very easily litter a teenage mind; inadequacy, resentment, and an overwhelming sense of failure.

I’ll be the first to admit that I glazed over this album in its entirety for years, oblivious to the profound impact that it would have on me immediately after my first front-to-back listen. It would be extremely difficult for me to pinpoint a more honest, introspective and raw collection of songs, one that I sadly find myself relating to more than I would like to acknowledge.

“I am heaven sent, don’t you dare forget. I am all you’ve ever wanted, what all the other boys all promised.”

Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t is a chilling track which delves deep into personal insecurities, as what begins with a less than modest statement quickly turns into an exposition of weakness and confusion. The egotistical opening is merely a front for the raft of issues that flow freely through the remaining verses.

“I think in decimals and dollars, I am the cause to all your problems.”

“Co-ordinate brain and mouth, then ask me what it’s like to have myself so figured out. I wish I knew.”

I quickly fell in love with the sheer brilliance of the band’s lyricism, and was blown away at the ability of their words to so perfectly represent my own emotions, even those that lay at the darkest corners of my mind.

“This is the grace only we can bestow,
This is the price you pay for loss of control,
This is the break in the bend,
This is the closest of calls,
This is the reason you’re alone,
This is the rise and the fall.”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oorx2EQ0Ag]

I have a love affair with words, and this album was significantly influential in shaping that passion. There’s just something so piercing and personal about the written form of expression, and when these introspective insights are coupled with music the impact is even more profound.

The music behind Deja Entendu is just as captivating as the words that accompany it. The dark and distorted bass behind Sic Transit Gloria … Glory Fades creates a gloomy and depressing atmosphere before exploding into a fast paced furor of guitars and drums. Play Crack The Sky proves to be the polar opposite, but speaks to the musical flexibility of the band, as they close out the album with a gorgeous yet haunting acoustic track. Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis is a slow and steady build up into overwhelmingly piercing vocals, while the upbeat drums that accompany Guernica provide one of the more energetic moments on an album that is quite content to flow through emotions at a slow and sombre pace.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3YVKTxTOgU]

The song which resonates with me the most however, is The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot; a gut-wrenching and fascinating retelling of a degrading relationship.

The subtle squeak of the guitar strings conjures up my own feelings of helplessness, as I’ve struggled to deal with relationship breakdowns and heartache. While I’ve often put up walls and acted stoically in the face of these moments, deep down I’ve failed to deal with my demons and often end up in a self-deprecating cycle of blame and regret. Was I the reason that this relationship ended? Is my personality toxic? What could I have done differently?

If it makes you less sad, I will die by your hand,
I hope you find out what you want
I already know what I am.”

And if it makes you less sad, we’ll start talking again,
You can tell me how vile, I already know that I am.”

The narrator behind this song is well aware of how he has hurt his partner, and discusses the possibility of ending the relationship, and his willingness to remove himself from all facets of her life.

And if it makes you less sad, I’ll take your pictures all down
Every picture you paint, I will paint myself out”

What transpires throughout the song was an eye opening moment for me, as I realised just how brutal, yet beautiful a song can be, if all the pieces happen to fall in the right place. The narrator slowly begins to blame his partner for the hurt he has caused her, twisting and manipulating the conversation to hide his own inadequacies.

“It’s cold as a tomb, and it’s dark in your room
When I sneak to your bed to pour salt in your wounds

So call it quits or get a grip
Say you wanted a solution
You just wanted to be missed”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0naRFSK2hQ]

At the end of the day, it is revealed that the narrator has blocked his own shot; and subsequently blocked his own chance to be with someone who truly cares for him, as he fails to take full responsibility for the breakdown.

Deja Entendu is an album which has withstood the test of time, and although pop punk has seemingly morphed into a rousing and upbeat genre that has crept closer and closer towards mainstream appeal, this is an album of the highest lyrical calibre, that never ceases to amaze upon revisiting.

With every acoustic strum or booming bassline I am transported into a world of pure emotion; emotion in its rawest form.

Outspoken Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has delivered an open letter to Enfield High School in Connecticut, after it was revealed that a musical production of American Idiot was cancelled at the request of parents, who voiced their concerns regarding the manner of content, including sex, drug use and swearing.

Censorship seems to be the buzz word of the week in the music business. However this time it’s not B.O.B mouthing off about his Twitter being censored because he has miraculously discovered that the world is flat.

Labelling the school as engaging in censorship, Armstrong pulls no punches in insisting that the younger generations should be exposed to the political and social landscape that they are a part of:

“I realize the content of the Broadway production of AI is not quite ‘suitable’ for a younger audience. However there is a high school rendition of the production and I believe that’s the one Enfield was planning to perform which is suitable for most people.

It would be a shame if these high schoolers were shut down over some of the content that may be challenging for some of the audience. But the bigger issue is censorship. This production tackles issues in a post 9/11 world and I believe the kids should be heard. And most of all be creative in telling a story about our history.”

I’m sure Billie Joe is even more ecstatic that the school has now chosen a production of Little Shop of Horrors to be performed in place of American Idiot. That doesn’t exactly scream punk rock now does it?
