OG member of New York collective the Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith, has just dropped a galactic self-aggrandising single from his upcoming Feature Magnetic LP, titled Super Hero and featuring none other than MF DOOM. It’s pretty out-there stuff, resplendent with wacky lyrics that reference everything from Marvel superheroes to John Travolta to Hello Kitty to Cold Stone Ice Creamery, which I’m assuming is the US version of Cold Rock.

The production is relatively skimpy, relying heavily on two recurring motifs – a synth that sounds like an outer space laser gun and a cymbal like a church bell – letting all those free flowing crazy name-checks sit right at the forefront. In an interview with Billboard, who premiered Super Hero, Kool reiterated the importance of staying unpredictable in music and fostering connections to art and culture. He also spoke about respecting KISS‘ aesthetic. And bananas:

“I see people buying a banana with a credit card. This guy’s filling out all this paperwork, holding up the line. And you’re like, “What is he getting? Oh, a banana.” He’s so advanced, he bought a banana with a credit card *laughs*. Does it really take swiping the credit card for a banana? Would you fill out all that paperwork? Can’t you just throw 75 cents up there and keep on going? I mean, I’ll pay for it! I’m way in the back, but I’ll throw some change on the counter. Some people are too far back, some people are too far ahead. Smart in one way, but dumb in another.”

Sure, okay.

In any case, the off-the-wall nature of the track makes it a genuinely fun listen, and we are always damn delighted to see the elusive MF Doom round the traps. He and Kool also worked together recently on When The Lights Go Out, a cut from Atmosphere‘s LP Fishing Blues, which was released last week. Could this be the beginning of a beautiful friendship?

Feature Magnetic is slated for release on September 16. You can download Super Hero and stream other album tracks World Wide Lamper and Tired from Kool Keith’s Bandcamp.

Even though he suddenly and devastatingly left us in January this year, David Bowie continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. Well, sort of. This particular shiny nugget of news is technically Bowie-adjacent; it’s still excellent though. The long-lost soundtrack to The Man Who Fell To Earth, the 1976 film starring Bowie as an alien (which, duh) is to be released on September 9 via UMC to celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary.

If you’ve never seen the flick, here’s a little background for you from a lifelong fan. It’s based on Walter Tevis’ 1963 science fiction novel of the same name, which followed the story of Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien from a drought-stricken planet called Anthea. Newton has made a long, arduous journey to Earth seeking a way to bring the rest of his people to safety there; but the follies of humans – self-destruction, sloth, substance abuse, untamed emotion, suspicion, lust, curiosity – ultimately cause him to fail. The film adaptation is a vivid fever dream, batshit but enrapturing, and was Bowie’s first starring role. It’s easy to see why it’s got such a strong cult following to this day. I’m sure the fact that it features real, legit, 100% full-frontal David Bowie nudity has NOTHING to do with it, either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfccDapMA14

Anyway, the soundtrack itself has been sought after by fans since the movie’s release. When Tevis’ book was reissued as a Pan paperback to coincide with the movie’s release, there was a note on the back cover: “Album available on RCA”, but it simply wasn’t. In a statement on the official David Bowie Facebook page, it was made clear that some fans have even tried to compile their own versions of the soundtrack, but they’d been unsuccessful. Why the release has taken so bloody long is still a mystery for now; however, the impending double-disc release will apparently come with a “48 page hardcover book” explaining all. The only hint we have so far is that the “lost master tapes” for the soundtrack were recently found, facilitating the release. But why were they lost? Where were they found? Is this some extraterrestrial stuff (or more likely, just a case of mislabelled tapes in storage)?

For completists, there will be a Deluxe Box Set coming a little later on November 18 – and its contents really read like the gift for the Bowie fan who has everything:

“The box features a reproduction of the original UK poster and a 48-page hardback book with rare photos and a new essay about the film from Paolo Hewitt. The book also contains enlightening notes from the movie’s editor Graeme Clifford who reveals that he used Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon as a temporary soundtrack whilst working on the film.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHmXlj40PsQ?list=PLJ8y7DDcrI_rrrLkG_x76tqXfTLgDVNOV

All that AND the soundtrack was composed by John Phillips (The Mamas & The Papas) and Stomu Yamash’ta, and UMC’s version of the release will contain all of Phillips’ tracks that didn’t make the final cut. It’s a landmark piece of Bowie history, and not just because it’s a seriously cool soundtrack. The Man Who Fell To Earth had a very tangible influence on Bowie. The movie poster is the artwork for Low, released one year later. It marked the birth of Station To Station – watch the trailer and look at the album artwork above and you’ll see what I mean. It paved the way to other iconic starring roles in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence; The Linguine Incident and as if I was ever going to end this sentence without mentioning Labyrinth. The upshot is this: if you’ve got a Bowie fan in your life and you’re ever stuck for gift ideas, you know what to do. Hint.

File this one under “headlines we never thought we’d write”: IKEA Australia have responded to Kanye West’s plea to work with the furniture giant with some pretty bloody genius shade.

IKEA Australia posted this master class on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/ikea.au/photos/a.276205668287.144759.112605923287/10154389308918288/?type=3&theater

In case you’re not sure, that’s a gigantic interlocking bed. Perfect for, oh, we don’t know, maybe 12 naked celebrities? Check the Famous riff too. This is high quality tongue in cheek stuff, juuuust subtle enough that some may not pick up on it straight away, but then once you see it it’s painfully obvious. Pretty clever of them, really: responding to Yeezy’s insistence that he be taken seriously as a designer by churlishly reminding the world of his eye-roll worthy non-statement of a video. Someone give whoever mans social media for IKEA Australia a damn medal.

All jokes aside, though, Kanye really IS serious about design, even if his attempts are sometimes somewhat misguided. He’s previously said that he’s been “working with five architects at a time”, and set up his own design company in 2012, DONDA, named for his late mother.

Kanye expressed his burning desire to work collaboratively alongside IKEA while speaking to BBC 1’s Annie Mac, saying “I have to work with IKEA – make furniture for interior design, for architecture…Yo Ikea, allow Kanye to create, allow him to make this thing because you know what, I want a bed that he makes, I want a chair that he makes”.

The passion is definitely there, folks, but IKEA aren’t having a bar. They’re just having a laugh and we get to watch it all play out. As much as there are many many more important things going on in the world, we’re kinda looking forward to Yeezy’s reaction now.

What a time to be alive, hey?

Colour us every single shade of keen: Camp Cope lead a wonderfully eclectic lineup for a brand new Sydney charity event called Voices. The event is primarily “a celebration of female and LGTBQIA+ musicians”, and as all the musicians on the bill are graciously donating their time, all proceeds will go to the Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre.

Its origins are humble – Voices blossoming out of a planning project students at the Australian Institute of Music were undertaking – but its intentions are undeniably commendable, and its execution looks VERY promising too.

Also gracing the event’s two stages will be electro-soul goddess and recent FBi Radio Independent Artist Of The Week Jannah Beth, beach punk purveyors Scabz, Newcastle duo Hey Lady! and many more. And if for some reason all that isn’t enough to get you on side, there’s gonna be lip-smacking vegan food from My Little Panda Kitchen (seriously, even if you’re not vegan do yourself a favour and check out their site… pure insanity), great prizes ranging from a bridge climb ticket all the way up to a guitar signed by Courtney Barnett, and plenty of chances to indulge your inner child in the form of giant Jenga and… a Mother. Flippin’. BOUNCY. CASTLE.

Alright, we’re convinced. If you’re not, I dunno what to tell you. Maybe you’re not a fun person? Fine, prove me wrong and RSVP to the Facebook event here.

Nick Cave has released the trailer for his upcoming one night only global film event One More Time With Feeling, which will land on September 8 – and it looks like (understandably) heavy stuff.

Originally, the Andrew Dominik-directed film was slated to simply be a 3D/2D spectacle of the recording of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds’ impending album Skeleton Tree. Then, Cave’s teenage son died under unspeakably tragic circumstances, and the nature of the film changed.

According to a statement, “The film evolved into something much more significant as Dominik delved into the tragic backdrop of the writing and recording of the album.” Now, One More Time With Feeling is more of a live performance/compelling documentary hybrid.

In the trailer, which you can watch below, Cave reflects on humanity’s stubborn fight against change and muses: “What happens when an event occurs that is so catastrophic that you just change? You change from the known person to an unknown person. So that when you look at yourself in the mirror, you recognize the person that you were, but the person inside the skin is a different person.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svru1jNLIK8

The film will have its world premiere at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, then make its way to over 800 cinemas around the globe – all on the same date. Then, at midnight on September 9, the  Skeleton Tree LP will drop worldwide.

Cave and Dominik have worked together before – on The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford where the former co-wrote the soundtrack with Warren Ellis and the latter directed – and the results were absolutely incredible. There’s much to be said about the importance of cinematic imagery within the scope of Cave’s music, so this feels like an extremely fitting and pertinent way for him to work through such a life-altering event. You can purchase tickets here or pre-order the album here.

It’s almost time for BIGSOUND 2016, which is both exciting and alarming – where has the year gone? QMusic have just added a fresh bevy of artists to the already outrageous lineup, and holy shit this is gonna be a good time..

Fresh from a BET nomination, unstoppable pocket rocket Tkay Maidza joins the stellar lineup of talent both local and international. So too do shred-dogs DZ Deathrays, Briggs/Trails incendiary hip-hop project A.B. Original, teen prodigy Mallrat, super-buzzed artist PON CHO, and many many MANY more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6jLfL_g4w0

In case you’ve forgotten who was already slated for this year’s BIGSOUND, we’ll happily oblige: highlights include Good Boy, Middle Kids (who still only have one song out but it’s seriously impossible to get sick of), Sampa The Great, LANKS, MOSSY, and ex-Preatures member Gideon Bensen.

And, of course, BIGSOUND is not just about the incredible live music – it was recently announced that Kim f*ckin’ Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Peanut Butter Wolf would be amongst an enormous host of industry panellists this year. Bloody huge, you guys.

BIGSOUND 2016 kicks off from 7 – 9 September, with the Live portion taking place across 15 venues in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Of course, with the QLD lockout laws having begun to come into effect, it’ll be interesting to see just how late all the standard insane parties actually last for, but there’s no doubt in our minds it’ll still be a stupidly good time.

Here we fucking go again guys: Broadly reports that reports of rape in London bars and clubs have gone up 136% over a five year period.

I’m not going to sit here and argue that this is because incidents of rape have necessarily increased. Personally, I don’t think that is the case. What’s more likely is that women are starting to FINALLY feel more confident in coming forward about these abhorrent actions.

I wish I could feel somewhat pleased about this.

I know it’s a step in the right direction. I would love to think that a marked increase in reports will increase in a marked increase in arrests, trials, and convictions and a subsequent decrease in rape incidences, but there is much evidence to support that even when rapes are reported, the very vast majority of rapists walk free.

The heartbreaking truth is that most rapes do go unreported – but that’s just the start. RAINN cite that only 344 out of 1000 rapes are reported (so roughly 1 in 3). Of the perpetrators reported, just 18.31% are arrested. To put that in perspective for you, 40.61% of those reported for battery/assault are arrested. When it gets down to brass tacks, 1.74% of reported rapists end up in jail.

I believe the justice system in every country could do with some serious fixing across the board, but the process set in motion when rapes are reported is falling down in so many places before incarceration is even on the table; it’s clear that this issue is being dealt with in a uniquely misguided and incompetent way.

I would never want to discourage anyone from reporting their rape or sexual assault to the police. I do, however, understand completely why someone might not want to report. In Broadly’s report, writer Sirin Kale says she heard some form of the following words during her investigation “depressingly often”: I didn’t think it was important enough to. Plus, I just wanted to get on with my night. We have been conditioned to ignore, to brush off, to essentially accept sexually violent behaviour as being the norm. Ask any woman if she’s ever been groped, grinded up against, grabbed, kissed, generally sexually intimidated or worse at a bar/club/gig/festival. You will very rarely hear a “no”, and most often you’ll hear it has happened multiple times.

And that’s just part of it – when we do report, we are subjected to questioning that implies guilt on the part of the victim. Did you encourage it in any way? What were you wearing? Then there’s the emotional, physiological and financial stress that the ordeal of accusing someone of rape can bring should it progress far enough. When there’s such a small chance of seeing justice carried out, it’s unsurprising that many opt to simply not report in the first place. That said, something must be changing if reports are increasing. I am endlessly proud of those who feel confident enough to come forward, but it just isn’t enough to change this insidious problem. We ALL have to speak up more – on all platforms.

Broadly questions whether many venues might actively discourage victims from speaking out. When someone is sexually assaulted at a venue, the next step is for that venue to go to the police. If this happens often enough, an investigation into whether that venue should be able to keep their license may be launched. Bryony Benyon, co-director of Good Night Out, says “I’ve heard cases of women being told to leave the club before calling the police because managers are so scared of this happening. It’s not a good approach.”

One potential solution to this particular facet of the problem is to offer training to venue staff so that victims feel secure in reporting and venues adjust their attitudes to focus on safety rather than their licenses. However, at the moment, Benyon is concerned that the training offered to London venues to help educate about and hopefully prevent these incidents is largely misguided. “The Met Police offer some training to venues but it’s very overly focused on the idea that ‘vulnerability’ is down to women drinking too much and making themselves at risk, rather than looking at why women who are drunk are deliberately targeted by perpetrators of rape and sexual violence.”

“Regardless of things like alcohol consumption, we are actually only really vulnerable when there is someone in our vicinity who will do us harm.”

There will likely always be human scum out there who will rape and/or sexually assault – but the sooner that education about consent, personal autonomy, and respect begins for everyone, the better. These issues are prevalent everywhere, and obviously this doesn’t JUST happen in bars and clubs, but to not speak out, form groups, take action, offer support, and directly address the attitudes and incidents as they relate to the music industry is to condemn it to remain unsafe.

Rejoice: Vic Mensa has revealed that his as-yet-untitled debut LP is well on its way to being finished. The chronically-delayed project has undergone many setbacks, and in an exclusive interview with All Hip Hop, Mensa revealed that the most significant setback came from within.

We already know that the Chicago rapper isn’t a huge fan of hosting scores of huge guests on his work because of the personal nature of his songs. We also know he’s done some serious soul-searching and has opted to use his powerful voice to shine a light on important social issues, as evidenced in Free Love, where he addressed the Orlando massacre and LGBTQIA* rights as well as 16 Shots, which unpacks police brutality. Now he’s shared just how deep that desire to create art that is inherently meaningful goes: Mensa scrapped the title and most of the songs he wrote for his debut album in pursuit of something more.

Originally, the LP was slated to be called Traffic, with Mensa embarking on his Traffic Tour last year. Then something changed.

“I made an album and then I didn’t feel like it was the right representation,” he said, “So I started making a new album. That’s where the songs from There’s Alot Going On came out of. I would say it’s about 75% done.”

Vic Mensa referred to the songs he’s working on now as “very autobiographical”, an approach that worked exceptionally well for him on his There’s Alot Going On EP released last month. He describes this newfound philosophy as being “very therapeutic… like writing in the mirror”.

Mensa asserts that spreading awareness of various social issues is the key to overcoming them. “That’s why I say the things I say in my music, to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. So that people understand – the people from Chicago – I can help them through this shit.”

After 52 years, one more Beatles mystery has been solved.

The original acetate demo of It’s For You, with Paul McCartney on vocals, has been discovered by the late Cilla Black’s relative. Lennon and McCartney wrote the song for their close friend Black, who released it to much success with It’s For You eventually peaking at a #7 chart position. Once Paul had tracked his own version of the song, which was much more like “a waltz” than the arrangement that Black ended up recording, the demo was delivered to London’s The Palladium in 1964, where Black was performing at the time. Then, for reasons unknown, it vanished and has long been thought lost or destroyed.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqwUz4RQETg]

That is, until a member of Cilla Black’s family stumbled upon a brown envelope with “It’s For You Cilla Black” handwritten on the front. Inside was a 7-inch Dick James demo disc. At first, they assumed it was simply a copy of Black’s hit song as sung by her, and they took it (along with several other Cilla Black demo discs) to be valued by Stephen Bailey, world renowned Beatleshead and manager of The Beatles Shop in Liverpool. As soon as Bailey began to spin the record, he knew what he was hearing.

“We got to the last one and as soon as I heard it I thought ‘Oh God, that’s not Cilla Black it’s Paul McCartney’.

“I was shaking with excitement and speechless. I realised that this was the long lost Beatles demo disc from 1964 and I was probably one of the few people to have seen and heard it in over 50 years. Apart from a few crackles, which you get with acetates, the quality is fine. It’s a wonderful recording.”

The demo is set to be a major attraction at the 25th Liverpool Beatles Memorabilia Auction on Saturday, August 27th, at the Paul McCartney Auditorium in the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Bailey asserts he expects it to fetch between £15,000  to £ 20,000 (~$26,228 – $34,970) at auction. In order to protect the demo’s value, you can’t listen to the whole thing, but you can tune in to a 20-second clip here.

Bailey also implored diehard fans to go on a treasure hunt, lest they be unknowingly harbouring anything as absolutely insane as this: “I urge all Beatles fans to search their bottom drawers and attics where they could have put Beatles memorabilia years ago and forgotten all about them – you just never know what you may find or what it is worth”.

At the very least, we reckon it’s more than worth a dig through your parents’ old stuff. Granted, we’re not all related to Cilla Black, but you never know.

Do you like comics, specifically Marvel ones? Same. Do you like hip-hop? Of course you do, that’s why you’re here. Now we’re all on the same page, you might be aware that Marvel does a very good, wonderful, amazing thing called hip-hop comic cover variants, wherein comic covers are illustrated in the style of classic, buzzed-about, or seminal hip-hop cover art. The first wave of this thing-we-never-asked-for-but-have-since-realised-we-need-more-than-air was nothing short of incredible; it featured tributes to Run The Jewels, A Tribe Called Quest and many more, with over 50 covers in total.

Round two is a lot smaller than that, but it’s every bit as killer. There are three variants: Doctor Strange #1 riffs on Desiigner‘s smash hit PandaMosaic #1 references Earl by Earl Sweatshirt, and Black Panther #7 is a tribute to King Mez‘s Long Live The King. The comics will be released on September 28 (Strange) and October 12th (Panther and Mosaic).

Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso is passionate about the link between hip-hop and comics. In a statement to Fuse, he explained that the variants were “about two art forms shouting out to each other”, describing hip-hop as the “backbeat” for many artists & readers of comics. It’s clear he’s serious about fostering this connection: Run The Jewels soundtracked for the Black Panther video series, and Killer Mike even penned the forward for the previously-released variant book.

Marvel hip-hop variant

Black Panther x Long Live The King. Image: Marvel via Fuse

For his part at least, King Mez seems pretty feckin’ stoked: “Growing up a huge comic book fan, it was a dream to come true to even be a part of this. Black Panther at that? Mannn, it was automatic when Marvel reached out. Really cool way to have LLTK immortalised like that. Hope we get to do a variant collab on my new project too.”

Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months, too – more variants are set to be released. Dunno about you, but I for one will be spending some time trying to figure out how to get one of these babies blown up to poster-size.
