Last month, the super talented trio of Chance the Rapper, Skrillex and Hundred Waters combined forces for a live rendition of their hit collaboration Show Me Love on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

In the time since, the world has been struck by tragedy; the shooting of 49 people in Orlando, Florida, has been a horrific blight on society in 2016, and many around the world have been prompted to respond in their own unique ways. The entertainment community has been particularly vocal, with Skrillex and his imprint label OWSLA no exception. Behind their smash hit, the triple threat have unveiled a ‘Show Me Love’ initiative to help raise funds and supports for victims and affected families of the tragic shootings in Orlando.

As a part of their attempts to raise funds, the trio have released a Behind the Scenes documentary look at their performance on The Late Show, as well as explored the history of the song.

All involved are also using the opportunity to call for donations, contributions and/or support, which you can do here.

You can read Howl & Echoes‘ own response to the tragedy in Orlando here. Our thoughts remain, still, with all of the Orlando victims and their families, friends and loved ones.

Savemoney member Towkio has officially announced plans to self-release new EP Community Service 2 on July 7. The Chicago MC’s first project since 2015’s .Wav Theory, the latest EP is slated to include fellow Savemoney members Vic Mensa and Joey Purp, along with production from such names as  Mr Carmack and Peter Cottontale. Recorded under the guidance of production icon Rick RubinCommunity Service 2 follows previous Savemoney releases from Vic Mensa, Joey Purp and Chance the Rapper earlier in the year.

Having been lauded as a rapper to watch by many publications and trendsetters this year already, Towkio is not far removed from the sounds of his more famous Savemoney cohorts, incorporating influences of jazz and soul with the hysteria of adventurous hip-hop. Having cited Kanye West and Lil Wayne as major influences, Towkio has long been regarded as one of the most charismatic, energetic members of the increasingly popular Savemoney movement coming out of Chicago.

In announcing the news of his upcoming project, Towkio has also taken the opportunity to offer fans the first release from the EP in newest track Tear Drop. Hear the first taste of Community Service 2 below, and revisit .Wav Theory here.

For the latest development in the ever-frustrating ‘war’ between music streaming platforms, Apple is reported to be in exploratory talks to acquire Tidal, a music streaming platform part owned and wholly championed by hip-hop legend Jay-Z.

With Apple having entered their own chip in to the streaming platform with Apple Music (officially unveiled almost exactly one year ago on June 30, 2015), the reported moves are likely an attempt by the huge technology conglomerate to further their place amongst the platforms and come out ahead of chief competitor Spotify.

Terms of the potential deal are, as of now, unclear, and likewise it is uncertain whether the rumoured talks will eventuate in a finalised deal. However, music fans will take the news as reason to rejoice, regardless, with growing frustrations at ‘platform exclusives’ shutting out fans from access to their favourite artist’s new releases. Especially given that Tidal’s ‘roster’ includes such enormous names as Jay-Z himself, Kanye West, Beyoncé, Pusha T, Big Sean and seemingly countless others, and has featured such exclusives as Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade and the recently released debut mixtape from buzzing rapper Desiigner.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5ONTXHS2mM]

So tell us music fans, how psyched are you to save $10 a month and throw all of your support behind Apple Music? Or does Tidal deserve to hold a place all its own?

After hearing the recent release of Japanese-American artist Mitski‘s new album Puberty 2, my anticipation to speak with the ambiguous artist was extraordinarily high. Having felt that Puberty 2 was one of the best albums of the year so far, I was excited to delve into its content with the intriguing woman behind it. However, not everything always goes to plan with interviews. No matter how excited and prepared you are, it’s still a two-way conversation and Mitski sounded tired, worn out and disinterested. Admittedly, this was deflating during the call. In retrospect, however, it only feels human – and this only furthered the mysterious, but profoundly human elements to Mitski’s artistry. All of the humanity I could feel coming through on Puberty 2 I could also sense in Mitski’s seeming shyness and desire to hold back. She presents herself as a mystery; a puzzle for her listeners to attempt to solve.

If nothing else, Mitski Miyawaki is as intriguing as her music is and that is something to be cherished. It was a privilege to talk with Mitski about her life, her art and the stories behind her stunning latest album.

Hey Mitski. I’ve listened to Puberty 2 a few times now and also got a chance to review it. I sincerely believe it’s one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. Congratulations.

Thank you very much.

How do you feel about the project now that it’s been officially released?

Well, I recorded it in January, so I’ve been sitting with the record for a while. I actually don’t even know how I feel about it anymore, but people are listening now which is good.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ0O2vDT0VE]

One of the things that really blew me away on this album was the lyrics and how you managed to beautifully craft the narrative and conjure up the images that you did. What inspires you when you’re writing your lyrics?

I just feel the need to write them, that’s essentially what inspires me. When I’m writing I’m not trying to do anything, I’m just doing what I feel I need to do.

I know you’ve spoken before about moving around quite a lot growing up, how do you feel that has impacted you as a person and an artist?

I guess I’ll never know for sure because I’ve never lived any other life, I just am who I am and this is it. I can’t know for sure how it’s affected me and how it’s affected my writing, but I assume that it’s made me a lot more able to look at myself and my emotions at a bird’s eye view, because I spent a lifetime as an outsider and I’ve become very good at looking at things from the outside and observing.

One of the tracks I particularly connected to on a personal level was Dan The Dancer, are you able to tell me a little bit about the inspiration behind that track?

An image came up in my head of someone hanging off a cliff, but also simultaneously living their life like it’s not a dire situation, and they’ve always been hanging off a cliff and they’re trying to pretend that it’s okay. And I imagined, what if that person who lived off a cliff fell in love with someone who’s not hanging off a cliff and how they would feel and what they would want to do. What if they want to hold that person’s hand, you know?

Out of curiosity, why wouldn’t my mother approve of the way your mother raised you (as in Your Best American Girl)?

It’s literal, but also metaphorical. Mothers represent where you come from, how you’ve been raised, what your culture is. I think I was just trying to describe viscerally the difference in upbringing and culture between two people.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_hDHm9MD0I]

I’ve seen you get a little bit of negative attention for the track Crack Baby and using the metaphor of drug addiction to sing about love, with some people accusing the track of being insensitive. What are your thoughts on that controversy and the track’s message itself?

In order to actually explain my point of view I would have to cross boundaries in terms of public and private life. I didn’t. All I can really say is that I wrote it when I was a teenager and in a bad place. I guess all I can do is apologise for the insensitivity, because in order for me to actually explain myself I would have to reveal things about my life and about things that I am just not that comfortable with putting out in public. The world is a big place with many opinions. That’s that.

There are so many extraordinary lyrics on the album, but the lyrics on Thursday Girl which go “I’m not happy or sad, just up or down, and always bad” really struck me more than any other. Would you be able to explain the story behind those lyrics and what they mean to you?

I guess it relates to the other song Happy where it occurred to me that happiness is also exhausting. Happiness is an up as opposed to sadness’ down and so both can equally be imbalances.

There’s such a variety of interesting sounds throughout the album, but I feel like I picked up on a punk vibe more than anything else and I’m curious what your thoughts are on that and what you can recall were your major musical influences for the album?

You know what, I’m not really sure. The reality is I think I’m influenced by everything, I wasn’t listening to any one artist while recording, I think it’s just a lifetime of listening to all sorts of music kind of coming out on the album.

The album seemed to end on a more uplifting note where you seem to reach a sense of peace. Do you feel like that was purposeful that you went through that narrative and you did find some peace with what you were dealing with?

Well, I don’t write albums as full albums, I write for the songs instead of albums. I write songs individually and I try to give each of them what they need. A lot of artists write albums thematically or they have an overarching narrative, but I don’t, it was just a collection of songs that I had which amounted to an album. I didn’t really have a message in mind, I think I just listened to the songs and figured out how they flowed best and used that to make the tracklist.

I’ve seen you labelled as ‘indie rock’ on platforms like iTunes, but it seems like there isn’t any one set genre to your music. How do you feel about those genre constructs and constraints, do you feel like that’s an outdated concept?

Yeah, I mean the thing is, I don’t know how I feel about it but if someone asked me what I would rather be called I wouldn’t know the answer to it. I think the whole genre thing is more a way of organising the whole giant world of music. It doesn’t really mean anything to me, but I know that iTunes needs me to put something in the genre section. I don’t really think about genre, but the business world and the marketing world need me to pick a genre.

You spoke recently about M.I.A. being a personal idol of yours, can you tell me a little more about what she means to you?

I randomly found her first album when I think I was 13 or 14. Her music was so different and I connected with it so strongly and immediately. I think she just continues to inspire me because she always seems to be doing exactly what she wants to do regardless of opposition. That’s not to say she’s trying to offend anyone, I don’t think she’s ever trying to do anything to be inflammatory, she’s just doing exactly what she feels is right or she thinks that she should do. It doesn’t really seem to matter to her whether people want her to do that or not, and I just find that so inspiring.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8wmkPLsBa4]

I know I saw you do a live cover of Calvin Harris’ How Deep is Your Love just recently, but I’m curious what music you’re listening to right now?

This makes me sound like an asshole but I’ve just been listening to jazz. I don’t think I can listen to anything remotely similar to myself and my music anymore because I start analysing it or I start listening to it as an artist. With jazz I can just fully appreciate it and absorb it as music, as a whole. And I think jazz is deep and beautiful, so that’s what I’ve been listening to lately.

Do you have plans to come out to Australia for some shows any time soon?

Nothing’s confirmed, but I would very much like to. The intention is there but I don’t have any confirmed dates.

What is next for Mitski?

I’m just going to be on the road and on tour for the next year. That’s my life.

If any day exists as a gift, it must certainly be Friday. Particularly when that Friday brings sweet, sweet new offerings from the world of hip-hop. Now, of course, we aren’t savages, and so then we come to wrap our gift and bedazzle it with all the joyousness of gift—giving. Like Christmas morning, but just six months earlier.

Featuring the talents of such artists as Ye Ali, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, wifisfuneral and Rich the Kid, embrace the wrap of rap we call — the ‘Rap Wrap’.

Ye Ali — Time

Singer/Rapper Ye Ali, who refers to himself as the ‘Trap House Jodeci’, tapped HotNewHipHop to drop this exclusive woozy, R&B/Trap hybrid on which he sings about the pains of not having enough time with a fling. A smooth introduction to Ali’s many talents, ‘Time’ is a brilliant way to ease in the day.

Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Logic & Ty Dolla $ign — Sucker for Pain

The latest track unleashed from the huge lineup on the upcoming Suicide Squad: The Album, this trippy, organ-laced beat enlists a handful of major names for this drop, which hopes to set the scene for upcoming DC Comics film Suicide Squad. With solid efforts from all the names involved, it becomes a task to wonder who offers the best contribution to what is undoubtedly an enormous track.

Fat Joe & Remy Ma (ft. French Montana, E-40, Game & Snoop Dogg) — All The Way Up (Westside Remix)

Fat Joe is somehow still riding high in 2016 with mega-hit All The Way Up, which received a brilliant guest verse from Jay-Z himself only recently. He’s looking to further that hit’s success with this Westside remix featuring the West Coast talents of E-40, The Game and Snoop Dogg, all of whom bring their A-games to this extraordinary beat.

wifisfuneral — Born 2 Lose, Born 2 Win

A bit of a lesser known name than most of the artists on this list, wifisfuneral is an artist who copped a co-sign from Earl Sweatshirt, himself. Over a curiously dark, cinematic beat, wifisfuneral shouts back at Earl and raps about his success and potential, putting the world on notice.

Mod Sun (ft. D.R.A.M. and Rich the Kid) — Smokin’ What I’m Smokin’ On

Rock-rapper Mod Sun combines forces with D.R.A.M. and Rich the Kid for this trap offering over a Don Cannon beat, big-upping and shouting out their lifestyles while swapping the spotlight.

Clams Casino (ft. Vince Staples) — All Nite

This track taken from Clams Casino‘s upcoming debut album 32 Levels has only been out for a short time, but gets a further boost with this video release from Clams and Vince Staples, utilising mind-bending visual effects as Vince raps in an industrial setting. With the buzz built up around this track already, the video provides a perfect accompaniment.

PARTYNEXTDOOR (ft. Drake) — Come And See Me

Further fuelling the dating rumours surrounding the pair, Kylie Jenner appears in the video for this PARTYNEXTDOOR smash, presumably taken from PND’s upcoming P3 album. Featuring further video cameos from names like Jhene Aiko and Big Sean, the video finds PARTYNEXTDOOR finally coming to see Jenner for an awkward half-kiss.

On June 25, Jay-Z released debut album Reasonable Doubt and launched the career of a man who has now become, without question, one of the single greatest hip-hop musicians to have ever lived. To celebrate the anniversary and the album’s enduring legacy amongst hip hop culture, Roc-A-Fella co-founder Kareem ‘Biggs’ Burke recently spoke to Billboard to reveal plans for a pop-up shop recreating the look of the Brooklyn apartment in which Jay-Z lived during the 1990s.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3fif3OCYc4]

In partnership with Los Angeles’ APT.4B, Burke revealed to Billboard that the pop-up shop will sell Reasonable Doubt t-shirts, cassette tapes, hats and more, while curating a unique experience for fans of the enormously talented and popular Brooklyn rapper. Billed also as a showcase opportunity for Burke’s 4th of November clothing line, the Jay-Z curated event will feature exclusive images from Jay-Z’s life before Reasonable Doubt being released, largely unseen by fans until now.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BCsxQg3NE4]

In addition, Reasonable Doubt themed emojis have been created for the event, which attendees will have an opportunity to take photographs with. The pop-up opens on June 25, the official 20th anniversary of the album, and will run through until the end of July.

Five years ago, hugely talented producer Shlohmo released a nine-track EP comprised of B-side cuts that didn’t make the final edition of his career-breaking debut album Bad Vibes. Titled Fine, Thanks, the EP became highly sought after by diehard fans once the producer was firmly established as one of the best in the modern game, but it steadily became harder and harder for these fans to find a copy of. Luckily for fans of the Californian producer, he felt in a giving enough mood to go ahead and re-release Fine, Thanks for everybody to be able revise, reminisce and enjoy once again.

It is a record that is absolutely flush with Shlohmo’s idiosyncratic moody, lo-fi production throughout. Listening to it, there is no palpable vibe or sense at all that this is an EP already five years old, so well does Shlohmo’s stellar production hold up to the test of time in a genre consistently being propelled forward into new territories and possibilities by technological advancements.

Fine, Thanks overall provides a welcome look back to Shlohmo’s humble beginnings as a solo artist and is a must-listen for his fans both day-ones and new. You can get Fine, Thanks  into your ears below via Spotify.

Brooklyn’s Desiigner has had an enormous 2016 already. With platinum-certified single Panda having stormed its way to a number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 off the back of Desiigner being announced as G.O.O.D. Music’s latest signee and appearing on Kanye West’s latest album The Life of Pablo, the Brooklyn trap star also recently made an appearance in the prestigious XXL Freshman List for 2016 — for which the young star performed a sing-song freestyle.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AP5zQrJRIg]

Eager to keep the ball rolling, Desiigner is also preparing the release of a debut studio album, The Life of Desiigner as well as a debut mixtape New English, which Desiigner has overnight premiereed at a TIDAL—sponsored event in New York City. Snippets of the tape have slowly begun to trickle out on to the web following the listening party, with listeners having reported hearing one song in particular featuring G.O.O.D. Music President Pusha T and a potential guest verse by trap mainstay Young Thug.

With Panda not going anywhere soon, and Desiigner likely not either with his upcoming releases (as well as appearances on the G.O.O.D. Music compilation album Cruel Winter, also due later this year), hip-hop fans are highly anticipating what might come next from the nineteen-year-old. A worldwide release date for New English has not yet been announced, but it would seem fans can expect to hear the new project from Desiigner sooner rather than later.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5ONTXHS2mM]

With the snippet previews of New English to go by, hopes will be high that Desiigner will bring all the same energy and turned up hit-potential sound that has seen Panda achieve its enormous and largely unprecedented level of success. If nothing else, Desiigner will always have Panda, and so will we.

It seems fitting that, in the same week Danny Brown releases new single When It Rain, Friday hits with a triple-whammy of brilliant visuals to prove that ‘when it rains, it pours’. With names like Lil Wayne, Bishop Nehru and Joey Bada$$ making appearances — this is a welcome winter downpour.

Lil Wayne — ‘Skate It Off’

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLpkYHCKXHk]

Lil Wayne‘s love of the sport of skateboarding is well-known, and he wilfully allows it to come to the forefront for the video for Skate It Off, dancing and skating around a skate park with his crew.

In a way, it could be symbolic that Lil Wayne has released the visuals for Skate It Off only days after it was announced that a plane Weezy was on found itself forced to make an emergency landing due to the New Orleans rapper suffering seizures (now thought to be related to epilepsy). In a sense, with all the worry surrounding him right now, Weezy just wants to skate it all off!

Nyck Caution (ft. Joey Bada$$) — ‘What’s Understood’

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP-wQQKqlcQ]

Powerhouse producer Metro Boomin collides with Pro Era talents Nyck Caution and Joey Bada$$ for this tremendous track, and accompanying video. All in all, both the track and the visuals give good backing to the sentiments expressed in a recent statement by Joey himself, who said of Nyck Caution:

“Nyck is a one of a kind passionate type of artist. I feel honoured to have him apart of my camp and label as he is a true lyricist and visionary. I am very confident in Nyck being the next up from Pro Era because he offers something new to the table that is very exciting to watch.”

With collabs this good, we’re hoping a statement like that means many more to come.

Bishop Nehru — ‘Midnight Reflecting’

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMMJbhMi-Nc]

Fresh off of dropping his latest mixtape MAGIC:19, the man MF Doom calls “a young master” has released the new video for Midnight Reflecting, the closing track on Bishop Nehru’s latest mixtape.

With the 19-year-old MC expected to release his debut solo EP (having previously released a collaborative album with the aforementioned MF Doom, titled NehruvianDOOM) later this year, all eyes are on the young man The Fader referred to as “New York’s newest pride” and this gloomy, slow-burning track/visual for Midnight Reflecting is as good a reason as any other to prove why.

Pause for a moment, so that you might consider an imaginative thought conjuring up the genre of hip-hop as a particularly delicious dish. Though you’ve been stuck at work and haven’t had a chance to eat it yet, it sits by its lonesome in the fridge. And what, may I ask, is the only way to ensure the continued goodness of this scrumptious offering as it continues its lonely existence in the refrigerator? Wrap, and not just any wrap – but the RAP WRAP.

It’s like Cling Wrap, but more specific and interesting, featuring names such as Juicy J, Rick Ross, Towkio, Your Old Droog and FAT TREL, amongst others. Enjoy your dish, ladies and gentleman. Eat well and be merry.

Juicy J, No English (ft. Travi$ Scott)

Juicy J and the hot hand of Travi$ Scott collide for this club-friendly banger, with TM88 handling the production for this latest single sure to grab plenty of attention, and shake a great many speakers in months (years?) to come. Coming perfectly in time for the beginning of the weekend, this is one track to add to any party’s playlist.

Rick Ross, Same Hoes

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/269438060″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=’166′ iframe=”true” /]

Rick Ross drops a hip-hop ode *ruggh* to sharing the same women as fellow celebrities and rich men *ruugh*, such as Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg and Pusha T, amongst so many *ruugh* others. Overshadowed by the bass *ruugh* somewhat, the beat alone makes the song worth *ruugh* listening to, if the enjoyment of judging the MMG label boss *ruugh* isn’t joy enough.

Towkio, Playin Fair (ft. Joey Purp)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/269426750″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=’166′ iframe=”true” /]

Preparing a new EP for release next week, as well as working on upcoming album World Wide .Wav with mastermind producer Rick Rubin, SAVEMONEY affiliate Towkio combines with fellow crew member Joey Purp for Playin’ Fair, a hyped anthem track showcasing the musical abilities of both young men. Taken from the upcoming EP release, Towkio further shows himself as one to watch for the future.

Your Old Droog, White Rappers

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/269405544″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=’166′ iframe=”true” /]

Working on a new album, titled PACKS, for release later this year, Your Old Droog drops a smooth offering sure to appeal to fans of ‘classic’ hip-hops. Perhaps most particularly, Your Old Droog will perpetually appeal to all Nas fans considering how uncannily their voices sound similar. Nonetheless, Your Old Droog remains one of the freshest talents to emerge in recent years, and White Rappers is a sincerely enjoyable track to affirm that fact.

Blended Babies, Charlene (ft. Ricky Hil & FAT TREL)

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/269251712″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=’166′ iframe=”true” /]

Dropping their latest EP, 6, on Soundcloud today, Blended Babies conjure up this solid, listenable track featuring dual talents FAT TREL and Ricky Hil, aka the son of renowned fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. The perfect track with which to end the day (whilst possibly utilising a certain green substance of questionable legality, perhaps), Charlene is a great way to end the week.
