Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, will reportedly be releasing his new album next month on December 3. It will reportedly be titled Awaken, My Love!, not PHAROS, which many had previously been led to believe.
The reveal has not come from an official source per se (ie a label or social media), however, a listing has been spotted on Amazon and All Music. The listing on Amazon Canada has been removed at the time of writing, although a listing on Amazon Germany appears to be live. Of course it’s possible that this is a red herring (hey for all we know this is a distraction and the album will be out tomorrow and will be called PHAROS, or he could pull a Frank Ocean and release two albums, or he might release nothing at all), but if not, this is pretty bloody exciting news. Gambino hasn’t released an album since Because The Internet in 2013, and if the comments made by attendees of his PHAROS festival/live performance event are anything to go by, this is going to be a really amazing record.
The announcement has been further confirmed by the appearance of this image at a music store called FYE in the USA, listing the album’s release on December 2:
Glover has had an extremely prolific year, releasing his smash hit FX TV series Atlanta, putting on a three night PHAROS festival/live performance thingy, to rapturous acclaim, and has most recently been announced as Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars spinoff film about Han Solo.
Childish Gambino will be touring Australia across the New Years period. Apart from those who attended the PHAROS event in Joshua Tree, California, attendees of Falls Festival and Sydney’s Field Day will be the first in the world to hear the new music performed live.
