LISTEN: There’s a New King Krule Track… Kinda

If there’s one musician who has mastered the art of reinvention early in their career, it’s England’s Archy Marshall. Though the 22-year-old has just about as many monikers as he does musical influences (Zoo Kid, DJ JD Sports, Edgar The Beatmaker, Edgar The Breathtaker and Lankslacks to name a few), Marshall is still perhaps best known as King Krule, the singer-songwriter who at the age of 19 brought us instantly infectious track like Easy Easy, sound-tracking the latter half of 2013.

Last year, he released his second album, A New Place 2 Drown, under his birth name to critical acclaim, helping to make his mark as a highly skilled producer as well as a songwriter.

Having released his much-loved debut album, 6 Feet Beneath The Moon under that name, King Krule quickly became synonymous with a skillful and oftentimes surprising, approach to mixing and making genres work together. He has often drawn influence from jazz, post-punk, shoe-gaze and hip-hop, blending them together and throwing his distinct vocals over top. Now,  he’s added to his long list of aliases, having uploaded a new track to his SoundCloud page under the name The Return Of Pimp Shrimp and drawing once more on that wonderful, wide array of musical influences.

The track, uploaded to SoundCloud today, is titled FEEL SAFE 88 (just say no), is a fuzzy, creeping blend of nostalgia-tinged r&b beats and waltzing, jazzy keys with Marshall’s instantaneously recognisable vocals layered over-top. This first venture under the new name was shared on Facebook only a matter of hours ago, when Marshall wrote “another age another name for the stomps” and provided the link to his SoundCloud.

Comments about there being yet another Archy Marshall alias in the world aside, there’s already a lot of love for the song, which has only been online for about 14 hours. You can take a listen to the new track right here, right now.
