Listen: Anna Lunoe Interviewed Empress Of on Beats 1

It has been a big year for Empress Of’s Lorely Rodriguez, with her debut LP Me meeting with  some undeniable viral and critical buzz when it dropped last April. Meeting with Australian DJ and producer Anna Lunoe,  the mind behind Empress Of shared some revealing facts about her dance-leaning electro pop and personal life for Apple’s Beats 1 Radio.

When asked about her recent collaboration with Blood OrangeBest of You, Rodriguez was quick to share her enthusiasm. “I’ve just started doing collaborations and it’s really fun. With that song, I feel like I’m contributing to Empress Of, but it’s just some extra flavor,” she revealed. “Last weekend in Chicago at Pitchfork Fest I went up and did the song with him and everyone knew the words. It was just really exciting.”

Resolving to ask some off-kilter questions, Lunoe uncovered a number of personal details fans may not have been aware of. Rodriguez’s guilty teenage anthem was Orange is the Color of Your Energy by ’90s rap-rock meets reggae outfit 311. Apparently, she’s not above muddling up her lyrics either. Lorley noted that one of her last Australian performances was the most recent incident. “I remember being in Australia in front of 4000 people and just being like I forgot the words to How Do You Do It. A song I sing literally every day and I forgot the words. My manager was front of house I just waved at him across the thing and he runs side stage and ran side stage and said ‘pull up the lyrics’ this happened in the course of a millisecond. He was like ‘you need to listen to your album.’”
