Leave it to Deftones frontman Chino Moreno to become the first ever musician to perform inside a real, actual, no-shit VOLCANO.
Moren and 20 incredibly lucky fans will be lowered 400 feet (121.92 metres) down inside Thrihnuagigur volcano’s dormant magma chamber, for what’s sure to be a very intimate acoustic set. The world-first event (although musicians HAVE performed on top of volcanoes before) will take place as part of Iceland’s Secret Solstice festival, which takes place this weekend. Icelandic act Snorri Helgason will also play the event, creatively dubbed Secret Solstice Presents Inside The Volcano, as an opener for Moreno.
We’ve heard of musicians taking risks before. Who could forget Keith Richards snorting his dad’s ashes? Or Mick Fleetwood doing so much coke over the years that put together it would’ve added up to a line over seven miles long? As much as this might sound just as precarious, if not more so, it’s actually relatively safe. Secret Solstice organisers have assured punters that the last time Thrihnuagigur erupted was about 4000 years ago.
Deftones will also play a set as a full band (on a nice, normal proper stage) as part of Secret Solstice, as will Radiohead, Of Monsters And Men, Die Antwoord, Action Bronson and many more.
