I love discovering new international acts, especially those crafting a wholly unique style for themselves. Scarecrow are a French group releasing raunchy, groove-laden blues-hop (if that wasn’t a term before, it is now), and they’re gearing up to release and new album, The Last at the end of June. This will mark their fourth release in as many years, following on from Left Behind (2015), The Well (2014) and Devil & Crossroads (2013).
This is one of those acts where I was initially planning to just listen to a single track, but found myself immediately hooked. Don’t believe me? See for yourself:
Scarecrow blend romping, stomping blues, complete with rich vocals (which are mostly in English), bluegrass twangs and roaring blues riffs, with slick verses and a razor-sharp flow. There’s something so seductive about French rap; it’s pure honey on the ears, despite having no idea what they’re saying. And for anyone who says non-English rap is lost in translation, can you genuinely say you can understand Young Thug any easier?
They recently made waves over at SXSW, and while Australian dates are yet to be announced, they are currently touring throughout France, after which they’ll be travelling throughout Europe, UK, USA and Canada. While on tour, they’re set to perform at France Rocks Summerfest, a one-of-a-kind month-long New York festival featuring exclusively French acts from all corners of the music world, including blues, jazz, electronic and plenty more. They’ll be performing on June 17 at Drom – head to the festival’s official website for dates, details, tickets and more.
