Tom Waits To Play A Priest In New TV Series “Citizen”

He may not have released an album since 2011, but Tom Waits has not exactly retired just yet. The musical legend (and one of this editor’s all time top five) has been announced among the cast for a new series on Hulu, titled Citizen. The series is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, best known for Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, the show is a superhero origin film set in a “supernaturalised” LA. Waits will play a character named Cesar, who, according to Deadline, is “a priest who is a walking anachronism of virtue and vice, mostly virtue. A proudly anti-authoritarian man, Cesar runs a guerrilla humanitarian outfit with questionable legality from his church in Boyle Heights.”

Tom Waits has acted in more than thirty films and TV shows throughout his incredibly prolific, creative career, most recently in Seven Psychopaths, which came out in 2012, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus in 2009. He also appeared on The Simpsons in 2013. So far no further details have been announced about the show, including production and release dates, but we’ll keep you posted once we know more.

Earlier this year, Waits released two new songs in the form of Blind Willie Johnson covers, which featured on a tribute album to the late blues singer. Last year, he wrote a poem for Keith Richards and performed a new song live, as a farewell to talk show host David Letterman.
