Canadian electro duo Zeds Dead have dropped their new single Back Home which features Freddie Gibbs.
The song opens with an ominous synth effect, before Gibbs drops into the track with his signature flow. It steadily builds towards the chorus, with the beat becoming more frantic as the song progresses, matched by the intensity of Gibbs’ rapping. Then, rather than exploding into a wall of sound, the chorus of the song takes a back seat, showcasing the vocal abilities of Gibbs and dynamic awareness of the duo.
What the duo have perfected is the ability to tease the audience with a concept, and then take it away, leaving the listener craving for more. This is particularly apparent in the outro of the song, which softly fades away after another dramatic build. Listen below.
Back Home is set to feature on Zeds Dead’s forthcoming new album, due out later this year and the group’s first via their own Deadbeats label.
The new album, which details for are yet to be released, will also be the duo’s first since their 2014 LP Somewhere Else.
Having just been in the country for Field Day, there are no immediate Australian tour plans for Zeds Dead.
However, Freddie Gibbs will be bringing his take on hip-hop down under this month.
