Listen to Bwana’s New Single “Akira’s Light”

Words by Alex Crellin

Toronto-born, Berlin-based producer Bwana has released the first single off his forthcoming EP, Capsule’s Pride, entitled Akira’s Light. The EP aims to reimagine and pay homage to the iconic 1988 masterpiece of film, Akira.

Producing beats for over 3 years, Bwana quickly made waves in the UK underground bass music scene with his debut release in 2011. His music shows a deft understanding of vocal samples, something that was critically acclaimed on his underground hit Baby, Let Me Finish.

Bwana’s reemergence has fans quivering with excitement, and anticipation further grew with news of a themed EP, centred on Katsuhiro Otomo‘s brilliant film, the aforementioned Akira. The nine-track EP is Bwana’s first release on tastemaker label LuckyMe, and will be a reworking for the original score. Bwana promises a rebuilding of the soundtrack, coupled with vocal samples from the movie itself.

The first single from the album is streamable on Soundcloud now, and it sounds amazing. Smooth techno beats form a base on which vocals from the film build on. It’s super easy to dance to, and I for one am really looking forward to the full release. Check it out below:

Considering the sheer impact that Akira had on an entire generation of misfits and wider society, Bwana has certainly taken on a ballsy task. From this first single, though, I’m optimistic it will do the film justice.

Capsule’s Pride is out March 25 on LuckyMe as a free digital download, and an accompanying Tshirt will be available to buy as well.
