Tinashe, SZA, Dej Loaf, Empress Of, ABRA, Lord Narf and Jean Deaux have a few things in common. Not only are they 7 of the most exciting new voices in RnB and hip-hop, and they represent minorities in the music industry, but they have also all joined forces to cover The Fugees‘ classic song, Killing Me Softly with His Song.
In the lead up to the release of The New York Times Style Magazine‘s Spring issue, the magazine published an article titled “The Season’s Most Seismic Earrings, on R&B and Hip-Hop’s Rising Stars.” Featuring these 7 talented ladies, the publication has now shared some behind-the-scenes footage of the stars, with each of them having a crack at the classic tune. Showing off their individual – and stunning – sets of pipes, all but Lord Narf and Dej Loaf take turns singing the hook. Instead of singing, these two provide an original verse each as a bookend, showing just how much skill they have when it comes to their rhymes.
Clocking in at just over a minute, it sounds so damn good you wish it went for a whole lot longer. You can hear it for yourself below:
