Is Vic Mensa Dissing Drake On His New Track, ‘Danger’?

Things are a bit strange with Vic Mensa lately. He’s been relatively quiet, but things looked really promising with Kanye West‘s album, The Life of Pablo, coming out and his feature spot on Wolves looked set to take his career to the next level – until he was replaced by Drake

Now, it was kind of still okay I guess. At the end of West’s Yeezy 3, when the album had finished and ‘Ye and his crew were passing the aux cord around playing new songs, an unreleased Vic Mensa track was one of them, titled Danger. Now it’s been officially released, and it’s raising more than a few questions.

Basically, the song is being called a diss track. Towards Drake. Which raises the question, who in their right mind would be game enough to diss Drake? Who could possibly have missed the global takedown and consequent international humiliation that Drake put one Meek Mill through – with one of Drizzy’s diss tracks even going so far as to be nominated for a Grammy? Who could seriously want to turn that wrath on themselves? Does Vic Mensa have a career death wish? Or is it all unintentional?

The verse in question is as follows:

I don’t like the way that n***** talking like they bullet proof / Until they gotta find out what a bullet do / Catch two in your Canada Goose / It’ll turn a n***** into proof, ooh

As DJBooth.net points out, there are more than a few “coincidences” here, and a few less than subtle jabs at the 6 God. Firstly, the “bullet proof” line; Drake just dropped Summer Sixteen where he says his verses are just that. Then there’s the “Canada Goose” bit; another jab at Summer Sixteen. However, Mensa may have bitten off more than he could chew with the last line.

Whilst everyone is busying worrying whether Drake is going to get down off his lofty pedestal to listen to an up-and-comer’s new track, there are deeper concerns that Vic has woken a sleeping dragon, and that dragon being Eminem. Referencing the late MC Proof, member of D12 and incredibly influential on that crew and particularly Em’s work is a no-go zone that goes without saying. So whilst Vic may not have meant any offence by that (you’d like to think deaths like that are off limits), Drake is absolutely tame compared to Eminem. Machine Gun Kelly made the mistake of tweeting about Em’s daughter being hot back in 2012, and has consequently been blackballed by some of the industry’s key players. So referencing his late colleague and friend probably isn’t a good idea. Yes, you may have Kanye West behind you, but that will only get you so far – especially when he’s swapping your verses for other more accomplished rappers.

We get it, Vic. You’re pissed Drake took your spot. But a young gun like you has no business picking a fight with one of the biggest artists in the world. We’re sure Kanye didn’t mean to hurt you. Perhaps it was all a big misunderstanding, but you know what they say – there’s no smoke without fire, and we don’t mean how hot this track is.
