New Netflix Kid’s Show ‘Beat Bugs’ Will Feature Covered Beatles Songs

Beat Bugs is a new animated kids show that will feature a whole host of musicians doing their take on some Beatles classics.

The impressive list of names sees Sia, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, and Of Monsters and Men amongst others all contributing to the music made famous by the Fab Four. There have been over 50 Beatles classics that have been covered and will be featured throughout the two series.

The Netflix original, which was created by Josh Wakely, centres on five friends who “band together to explore and learn in an overgrown suburban backyard, which to them is their entire universe,” according to the press release.

In an interview with US Today the Australian filmmaker discussed how he came up with the idea and thought it would be easy to acquire the rights to the Beatles songs. “I would say, ‘I’ve got this amazing idea for a kids’ show, and all I have to do is get The Beatles’ rights.’ People would roll their eyes [at me].”

“I thought it would take four months. It took three years,” he added.

Each episode lasts 11 minutes and will incorporate a different Beatles song into each one of its storylines, with Sia covering Blackbird and Eddie Vedder covering Magical Mystery Tour.

The show centre’s around five friends who are bugs- Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz, and Walter and their adventures. “It’s a family-oriented story that uses the narratives and perhaps the best melodies of all time to tell stories of joy, happiness, community and adventure,” Wakely explained.

Over the three years it took him to gain access to the Liverpool band’s catalogue, Wakely eventually acquired over 300 tracks which means if the show is successful in its first two seasons, there is plenty more where it came from.

The show adds to the streaming service Netflix’s growing selection of original children’s shows, but you can put this one down to being the most exciting. It will be available later on in the year in August.
