This week we got the first piece of new material from FKA twigs in 2016. The follow on from last year’s acclaimed M3LL155X EP, this week twigs dropped her new song Good To Love along with an accompanying video. The track premiered yesterday on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, stepping away from her usual deep beats and melodies, twigs’ deliciously delicate voices sails over a lighter back drop.
Opening with simple piano chords and the line “I’ll pray for you”, there’s a religious feel that automatically calls up Madonna’s Like A Prayer. A comparison that only grows stronger as twigs’ voice strengthens into a deeper resonance. The likeness stays well within the glorious pop emotion in the song, and a kind of religious ecstasy which is heightened by the subtle organ within instrumentation. But Good To Love is still very much in line with twigs contemporary, genre-spanning version of pop.
Produced by FKA twigs and Rick Nowels, the track was originally showcased at Soundtrack 7 – twigs’ Manchester International Festival residency. The video for Good To Love was directed by and stars twigs herself, featuring the bejewelled singer writhing amongst the sheets in a big white bed. It’s a simple enough concept, but in the style that we’ve come to expect from the experimental singer, expert camera work and twigs’ mesmerising dancing renders the black and white clip really quite beautiful.
FKA Twigs is expected to perform the song live on Jimmy Fallon‘s The Tonight Show next Wednesday (February 24).
