Blood Orange and Nelly Furtado Release Collaborative Mixtape

In one of the more unlikely musical combinations of 2015, Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange has teamed up with pop artist Nelly Furtado to release a collaborative mixtape titled Hadron Collider.

Hynes announced the news via Instagram, sharing a photo of the actual cassette tape it is being released on. That’s right, it’s not just a figurative mixtape, but a literal one.

SURPRISE!! I made a cassette with Nelly Furtado only available (for now) at the shows today! Maybe she’s in town & we can play it live…

It sure is an interesting move for the both of them, Furtado in particular. But considering how much pop music has changed this year, and how much our perception of pop music has changed, is it really that surprising after all?

For now, the tape is only available in its physical form, and will be sold exclusively at Hynes’ live “Blood Orange and Friends” shows at the Apollo Theatre in New York City. However, the Instagram caption includes a tantalising “(for now)”, indicating that the rest of us will be able to hear it eventually, presumably via an online release.
