Ty Dolla $ign teams up w/ Brandy & Kendrick on “LA”

Last week, Ty Dolla $ign released a brand new track, LA. The track features something of a Californian supergroup, including honeyed hooks from ’90s R&B star Brandy, an always-excellent guest verse from King Kendrick Lamar himself, plus additional vocals from James Fauntleroy. I gotta say – I usually don’t really like Ty Dolla $ign much, but this is an awesome track.

The smooth, retro-sounding (as in, Timbaland/Nelly type retro) R&B infusion takes the listener through a romanticised series of tales, reminiscing and reflecting on Los Angeles, the city of angels.

Kendrick’s verse is of course a stand-out. The flow is a little different, and with a more aggressive consistency than a lot of his recent verses; the smooth and relatively lighthearted lyrics (For K. Dot, anyway), certainly remind us of his pre-To Pimp A Butterfly style far more than the sprawling intensity of late. It’s no surprise, considering that LA first surfaced as a demo around three years ago. It has since run through a vast number of public changes and reincarnations – but the final version is as you’ll hear below.

LA is set to feature as the lead track on Ty Dolla $ign’s upcoming project Free TC, which is being released for free this Friday November 13. It’s also set to feature Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Fetty Wap and R. Kelly.
