Although he’s been releasing music for years, until a few months ago you’d be forgiven for not knowing the name Anderson .Paak. That’s all changed now, and for good reason too.
The California-based artist sprung to global attention this year after featuring on not one, not two, but SIX tracks on Dr Dre‘s long-awaited 2015 album Compton, and momentum has been building ever since. This year alone he’s also featured on tracks with The Game, Med, Blu & Madlib, GoldLink and more. Last weekend, Dre premiered a new .Paak track on his Beats 1 radio show, and today comes the release of Am I Wrong featuring rapper Schoolboy Q and production from Pomo.
This single shows off a really different side to what we’ve heard from .Paak recently – the upbeat rhythm and colourful soundscape shows us how well .Paak’s unique, immediately distinctive voice slips from aggressive gangsta rap to disco/soul-infused R&B, and everything in between.
The track perfectly infuses the disco beats with .Paak’s own style, perfectly contrasted against the bouncy, equally identifiable tone of Schoolboy Q’s verses.
Fingers crossed that we’ll be hearing a lot more from the rising star soon – it’s clear that you won’t be forgetting the name Anderson .Paak any time soon.
