Introducing: MAALA

We’re always on the hunt for exciting upcoming artists to share with all of you! Today we’d like to introduce you to MAALA, a singer/producer from New Zealand. Producing emotive, not to mention totally on-trend future-soul, this is one for fans of Chet Faker, Jarryd James, Fractures or HONNE.

Real name Evan Sinton, he picked the name MAALA from a pile of random Scrabble letters. Sinton first came to public attention a couple years ago on New Zealand’s Got Talent – but he’s been crafting his own identity and establishing himself as a serious talent ever since. In March this year he released Touch on SoundCloud, before premiering the gorgeous In The Air on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, the video clip for which you can peep below.

With a sweeping, atmospheric soundscape that blends piano chords with earthy electronic layers and splashes of all kinds of colourful synths, it’s easy to imagine this track dominating the radio waves. Easy to digest, but equally enjoyable, it takes a lot to create music like this, and stand out against the myriad other artists doing the exact same.

In The Air featured on MAALA’s five-track debut EP, which came out in August and has been picking up momentum ever since.  Listen to the full release here, and get ready, because you’re going to be hearing the name MAALA a lot more in 2016 and beyond.
