The chronicles of Odd Future are well documented. Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt have established themselves as staples of a new generation of rappers, while the likes of Frank Ocean have R&B fans waiting with bated breath for a new release.
There are more characters to the story however, and although there is a definite layer of quality that sits atop the OFWGKTA hype machine, delving a little deeper uncovers some serious talent. Domo Genesis and Mike G immediately spring to mind, however it is the unorthodox duo, Mellowhype that has gradually developed its own cult following.
The duo, consisting of rapper Hodgy Beats and producer/rapper Left Brain, have definitely suffered a decline in popularity over the past year, but perhaps that is all about to change, as Hodgy himself has released a brand new track that shows off his eagerness to return to the game.
“Hodgy back for chips, I ain’t gonna relax one bit,” raps Hodgy Beats on HUNGRY, a track with a beat that at first listen sounds like your mum banging on pots and pans in the kitchen. As the beat settles in to a heavy bass and catchy hook, we are left with two minutes of solid wordplay and the unique whiny twang of the New Jersey native.
There is an air of ferocity from Hodgy as he recounts his seemingly reinvigorated hunger for the rap game, and if a single and a video weren’t enough to assert this new found energy, the video ends with the reveal of what can only be presumed as a new mixtape release date. World Domination is slated for a December 10 release. Pencil this one into your calendars kids, if this track is anything to go by, we are in for one heck of an aggressive album.
