Eight of the Weirdest Christmas Releases

It’s just over a month until the holiday season, and the Christmas releases have already started. Yoko Ono and The Flaming Lips have collaborated to bring us Christmas 7, including a cover of John Lennon‘s Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and Atlas Eets Christmas. In the true spirit of Christmas, both are wonderfully lame and slightly cringeworthy. They won’t be available until December 11th, however, since they have been previously released, you can listen to both of these tracks down below.

There have been so many weird Christmas releases over the years. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad songs (though some of them are awful). Most of them are just unexpected in the way they are carried out, leaving the atmosphere feeling a little awkward. We managed to narrow down the list of these wacky tracks to eight of the weirdest and best of all.

Christopher Lee – Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing

Christopher Lee’s deep voice was not only used for acting. He was also into metal and recorded a few albums. Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing was released last year. There’s something satisfying about a strong electric guitar with Lee belting a heavy metal version of a classic Christmas song in an operatic voice. Listen to a preview of this and some of his other Christmas songs below.

Crazy Frog – Crazy Hits (Crazy Christmas Edition)

We take you back to 2005, when Crazy Frog was, unfortunately, a thing. If you thought that one song everyone had as their ringtone was bad enough, we’re sorry to inform you that Crazy Frog also made a Christmas album. Of course, he fucking did. Check out his cover of Last Christmas and see if you can last longer than I did (30 seconds in and I was done).

Ali Lohan – Lohan Holiday

Lindsey Lohan tried to become a singer once upon a time. Apparently, her younger sister had a good go as well. In 2006, Ali Lohan released a Christmas album called Lohan Holiday. Judging from the track below, it has an overproduced Disney-vibe. With sparkle sound effects and an obnoxiously overbearing backing track, it sounds like the perfect soundtrack for a 12 year old girl at Christmastime.

Bad Religion – Christmas Songs

Bad Religion are an atheist punk band, so this is very strange. You’d think they wouldn’t have taken a few songs written about baby Jesus and arranged them as seriously as they did. In an interview with Rolling Stone, they mentioned that it is a little ironic, but they did not do this with the goal to make fun of Christianity or those who celebrate Christmas (they actually love Christmas!). It’s made with the best intentions, and, though it feels wrong, I kind of like it.

Meco Monardo – Christmas In The Stars

Here you go, Star Wars fans. With the new movie causing all kinds of excitement, I had to put this one in. In 1980, Meco Monardo produced a Christmas album with a Star Wars theme featuring the voices of Anthony Daniels as C-3PO and Ben Burtt as R2-D2 and Chewbacca. Jon Bon Jovi even sang on one of the tracks. Listen to your favourite robots sing the world’s most bizarre duet below.

Snoop Dogg – Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto

This Snoop Dogg track may start out with an innocent and tradition sound as if it were a part of a daggy Christmas movie. As soon as the beat kicks in though, you know you’re in for something weird. The sound of 90’s hip hop floods in and the sea of rappers flow with rhymes about the consumeristic nature of Christmas. You can’t unhear this. Or stop yourself from pressing repeat.

Eazy E – Merry Mutafuckin’ Xmas

This one was a recommended video from the Snoop Dogg one. Look at the title. As if you wouldn’t click on it. It’s just as cringeworthy as it sounds. With the sound of gun shots to welcome a backing track that sounds a bit like the Fresh Prince theme song and some – let’s say ‘interesting’ – lyrics, it’s safe to say this is not something to be played with your family on Christmas Day.

Sufjan Stevens – Christmas Unicorn

Sufjan Stevens is a man who sure loves Christmas. Since 2006, he’s released 10 EPs full of Christmas covers, as well of some originals. This is one of them. As the title suggests, he wrote a song about a unicorn. We know him as a lyrical genius, but he’s managed to come up with the most hilarious phrases such as “I’m a Christmas Unicorn, in a uniform made of gold // With a billy-goat beard, and a sorcerer’s shield, and mistletoe on my nose”. To tell you the truth, this is actually awesome.
