Basenji: Three Albums That Changed My Life

Although he’s no stranger to the Australian electronic music scene, Basenji, aka Sebastian Muecke just dropped his debut EP in September. Trackpad was a wonderful showcase of his unique, spritely melodies and beats, and audiences were treated to a killer show when he took his tunes on tour. He’s now set to perform at THE PLOT on December 5 (details below), but we wanted to get to know him a little better first. In this episode of ‘Three Albums”, Basenji takes us through some of the tunes that taught him how to be the man he is today. Enjoy!

DJ Rashad – Double Cup

This album came out shortly after I became interested in the Teklife scene that was happening in Chicago. Double Cup came out quite recently (late 2013) but completely changed my taste in dance music and for me did something very exciting with the juke/footwork style. I was lucky enough to see DJ Rashad live in Sydney and to date it was one of the best gigs I have been to, the passing of DJ Rashad is a complete tragedy but his legacy will always be remembered.

DJ Danger Mouse – The Grey Album

I think I heard The Grey Album in the middle of high school and at the time didn’t really know a lot about DJ Danger Mouse. To be completely honest, I didn’t really know a lot about The Beatles or Jay-Z either. There was something perplexing about the way this bootleg release combined music from two completely different ends of the musical spectrum. It’s really just a mash-up album but to me it felt like so much more and really helped me realise the artistic value of sampling. The Grey Album demonstrated how having a concept and a specific creative drive can make something as simple as blending two songs together into something really exciting.

Luther Vandross – Never Too Much

I don’t have a lot to say about this album – but it means a lot to me. This album sort of captures my affinity for disco and is just such a perfect album from start to finish. Luther Vandross is still one of my favourite male vocalists and on this album the power of his voice is matched by super strong instrumentation and songwriting. Never Too Much is something I still listen to regularly and I don’t think will ever fail to impress me. RIP Luther Vandross.
