We’re not exactly sure when queen of neo-soul Erykah Badu actually sleeps. The legendary artist seems to grow ever-more prolific as the years go by – not only is the mixtape coming, but she will be performing a “largely improvised” one-woman show from October 29 – 31 in Dallas, Texas, at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. She’s ALSO going to be hosting the Soul Train Awards on November 29.
Most recently, she released an incredible cover of Hotline Bling – I actually prefer it to the original, and would not dare to count the number of times I’ve spun it already. Re-named Hotling Bling But U Caint Use My Phone, the cover came with the announcement that it would feature on forthcoming mixtape, which we believe to be full of covers, similarly titled U Cain’t Use My Phone. It now looks as though the entire mixtape is ready to drop any minute, if her comments in a recent Noisey interview are anything to go by.
“I’m writing all the time, but recently I got the bug back,” she says. “When it comes, it comes, and I can’t force it, but recently I got it back with Hotline Bling and all the other things I’ve been experimenting with.”
While Badu gave little information about what to expect, a truck number or listing, featured guests or anything else, we aren’t even that concerned. New Badu is good news in itself, and the fact that it’s coming so soon is, as always, incredible.
