Melbourne indie rock outfit City Calm Down continue to jump from strength to strength with second single Son, off upcoming debut album In A Restless House (due out November 6th). It is the first full length release from the four piece, but they have been making waves since 2012 when EP Movements burst onto the scene. With a sound that evokes a thunderstorm, filled with slow builds and crashing choruses, it is easy to see why. Rather than rushing headlong into the momentum created, the band went into a three year long hibernation, hashing out over 70 demos, from which the album was born.
Emerging stronger than ever and winning hearts world wide, Son picks up where first single Rabbit Run left off. The haunting depths of frontman Jack Bourke’s voice can be felt all the way to your toes, and is stacked on top of layers and layers of 80’s new wave-esque instrumentation. It’s as if Matt Berninger of The National has time travelled to play with Joy Division. But, where Rabbit Run is moody and introspective, Son transcends to new joyous heights with a smattering of horns and stunning choir backing vocals.
The guys will be touring nationally in October in the lead up to the album release, so be sure to catch them for a first look at what else the much anticipated release will hold.
